My Travel Photography Gear: What is in My Camera Bag?

I’ve gotten so many questions on the type of camera I have and my lens, and I want to show you what all is in my camera bag!

Camera

I currently shoot with the Canon 5D M IV camera! It is a full-frame digital SLR camera with excellent performance. It shoots up to a resolution of 30.4 MP and also shoots 4k in video. I made the investment to purchase this camera body in the fall of 2020 and could not be happier with my purchase. Note that this is considered a professional camera, and I wouldn’t recommend starting with this camera if you’re just starting photography as it is a big investment and the settings are meant for more experienced photographers.

Canon 5D Mark 4 Camera Body

I actually started with a Canon Rebel SL1, and I highly recommend that camera for any beginner photography enthusiast! I used that camera for several years and was highly impressed with the performance of the camera. It is much less costly and typically comes in a kit with the standard 18-55 mm lens. Plus, it is considered one of the world’s lightest DSLR which makes it very easy to travel with. Check out the SL1 if you’re looking for a great beginner travel camera!

Camera Lens

Moving on to my camera lens! I have 3 total lenses but mainly travel with my wide-angle lens as it is my most versatile lens. With travel photography, you’re going to want a few different lenses based on the scenery and your point of focus.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L ll USM Zoom Lens

This is my most used lens as it is a great wide-angle lens that allows me to capture narrow streets to beautiful interiors. It gives a great range in focal lengths and goes down to an aperture of F2.8 which allows you to capture a more shallow depth of field.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II SLR Lens

This 18-55mm lens is a very standard lens that comes with most beginner camera kits. I currently don’t use this lens much but it is much more lightweight than the wide-angle lens so it is a great option if you want something lighter.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens

This lightweight lens is great for portraits! The 1.8 aperture really allows you to capture that soft background and bokeh effect for those beautiful portraits. I use this lens when I am taking headshots or photos for other people.

Tripods

Having a good and sturdy tripod is so important especially if you travel solo frequently like me! I have both a camera and phone tripod.

TYCKA Rangers 56” Compact Travel Tripod

This is my go-to tripod for my camera, and it is so worth the investment! It is super light and folds up nicely. I can just attach it to the bottom of my camera backpack (more on this later). You can also detach the legs on this tripod and turn it into a monopod easily. I highly recommend this tripod!

I bought this tripod for my phone, and it is also super lightweight to travel with as well! All in all, a solid tripod for your phone.

Camera Bag

So I am actually obsessed with my current camera bag! I’d been looking for a good quality camera bag without breaking the bank for a while, and decided to order this one – and to my surprise, it was exactly what I was looking for. The bottom half of the bag is for your camera and it fits my Canon 5D M4 with the 16-35mm lens, and there’s room at the top for a lightweight jacket or snacks. It also has an interior pouch for a laptop and an exterior pouch for your camera accessories. Plus, this bag is a bargain!

Accessories

I also carry a variety of accessories in my camera bag depending on the trip and what I’m shooting! I am listing these items so you don’t forget to pack these or have these handy.

  • Batteries: I always have an extra battery charged with me at all times! The biggest nightmare would be running out of batteries on a trip.
  • Battery charger: Don’t make the mistake of not packing your battery charger.
  • Memory cards: always check your memory card capacity prior to going on any trip or shoot – I use the SanDisk 256GB Extreme Pro as I shoot in RAW and I know this will give me plenty of space to take as many shots as I want.
  • SD Card Holder: I have an SD card holder to keep track of all my SD cards, and it is probably one of the most useful items I’ve bought.
  • Hard Drive: I use an external hard drive for my files, and I carry this with me on my trips to backup my photos.
  • iPhone SD Converter: I carry the converter with me in case I need to get a file from my camera to my phone quickly.
