Cinque Terre, located on the rugged coast of the Italian Riviera, is a stunning and unique travel destination renowned for its picturesque landscapes, colorful villages, and breathtaking coastal views. “Cinque Terre” translates to “Five Lands”, referring to the five small seaside towns that make up this UNESCO World Heritage Site: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. This area was even the inspiration for the setting of the Disney film, “Luca”. It truly is one of the most beautiful places in Italy. I’ve been numerous times myself and am excited to share the best things to do in Cinque Terre!

Is Cinque Terre Worth Visiting?

I get this question a lot and…absolutely! I’ve traveled to over 40 countries and Cinque Terre is still one of my favorite places to visit.

Here’s why you need to visit Cinque Terre!

1. Scenic Beauty: The rugged coastline of Cinque Terre is characterized by steep cliffs, terraced vineyards, and crystal-clear waters, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.
2. Colorful Villages: Each of the five villages has its own unique charm and character, with brightly colored houses perched precariously on cliffsides. Exploring the narrow, winding streets of these villages is like stepping back in time.
3. Hiking Trails: Cinque Terre is renowned for its network of hiking trails that meander through vineyards, olive groves, and along the coastline, offering breathtaking views at every turn. The most famous trail is the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), which connects all five villages.
4. Local Cuisine: The region is famous for its fresh seafood, pesto sauce, and Ligurian specialties. Visitors can enjoy delicious meals at local trattorias and seaside restaurants, accompanied by regional wines such as Sciacchetrà.
5. Cultural Heritage: In addition to its natural beauty, Cinque Terre boasts a rich cultural heritage, with historic churches, castles, and ancient fortifications scattered throughout the region. Visitors can explore these landmarks to learn more about the area’s history and traditions.

Cinque Terre vs Amalfi Coast

I personally prefer Cinque Terre over the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Coast is known for its upscale resorts, luxury hotels, and high-end dining options while Cinque Terre is known for its rugged coastline, colorful houses, and terraced vineyards. Don’t get me wrong…the Amalfi Coast is definitely worth a visit, but I prefer to visit Cinque Terre between the two. There is also more variety of things to do in Cinque Terre! How to Get to Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is on the Ligurian Coast of Italy and is located between the cities of La Spezia to the south and Levanto to the north. If you’re flying into Italy, chances are you’re flying into Milan or Rome. Train travel is the best way to get to and around Cinque Terre as there is a train station at each of the five villages and it’s about a 5-minute ride from each town. I suggest getting the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card which allows for unlimited train travel between the La Spezia, the Cinque Terre villages, and Levanto.

• Milan: You can take a train from Milano Centrale (Milan’s main station) to Monterosso which is the northernmost of the five villages. From Monterosso al Mare you can take a train to any of the other villages.
• Rome: You can take a train from Roma Termini (Rome’s main station) to La Spezia which is south of the Cinque Terre. From La Spezia, you can easily take a train to any of the five villages.
• Florence: In terms of major cities, Cinque Terre is located closest to Florence. If you’re coming from Florence, you can take a 1.5-hour train from Firenze Campo Marte to La Spezia.

Tip: I suggest downloading the Trenitalia app if you plan to visit Italy! It is a super useful app and allows you to purchase train tickets, find train schedules, and even track the location of trains.

The Towns of Cinque Terre

As mentioned earlier, five coastal villages make up Cinque Terre. Each of them are different and have their own unique characteristics. You definitely have to visit each of them! Don’t make the mistake of skipping any one of them. Here’s an overview of each of the five villages of Cinque Terre!

Starting from north to south…

Monterosso al Mare:

• The largest of the five villages.
• Divided into two distinct parts: the old town and the new town.
• Features a long sandy beach, making it a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming.

Vernazza:

• Often considered the most picturesque of the Cinque Terre villages.
• Characterized by a small natural harbor surrounded by pastel-colored buildings.
• Features a medieval castle, the Castello Doria, offering panoramic views of the village and coastline.
• The main square, Piazza Marconi, is lined with cafes and restaurants, ideal for enjoying local cuisine.
• Offers access to hiking trails, including the famous Sentiero Azzurro.

Corniglia:

• Unique among the Cinque Terre villages as it is situated on top of a promontory, not directly on the sea.
• Accessible by climbing a long staircase (or shuttle bus from the train station).
• Known for its terraced vineyards and panoramic views of the surrounding coastline.
• Features a tranquil atmosphere with fewer tourists compared to other villages.

Manarola:

• Famous for its colorful houses perched on steep cliffs overlooking the sea.
• Features a picturesque harbor where fishing boats can often be seen.
• Offers a scenic walking path along the cliffs, providing stunning views of the village and coastline.
• Known for its locally produced wine, particularly the sweet Sciacchetrà dessert wine.

Riomaggiore:

• The southernmost village of Cinque Terre.
• Offers a rocky beach where visitors can relax and swim in the clear waters.
• Known for its vibrant atmosphere, especially during sunset when the cliffs and buildings are bathed in golden light.

Cinque Terre offers numerous activities and experiences for visitors to enjoy its stunning coastal landscapes, charming villages, and delicious cuisine. Here are some of the best things to do in Cinque Terre:

1. Explore each of the five coastal villages

Needless to say, you need to visit all five villages of Cinque Terre. Each of the five villages in Cinque Terre has its own unique charm and attractions. Wander through the narrow streets, admire the colorful houses, and visit local shops and cafes. Highlights include the harbors of Vernazza and Riomaggiore, the medieval churches of Manarola and Corniglia, and the castle in Vernazza. Keep reading for the best things to do in Cinque Terre!

2. Hike the Cinque Terre Trails

The Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) is a network of hiking trails that connects all five villages of Cinque Terre. The trails offer breathtaking views of the coastline, terraced vineyards, and the Mediterranean Sea. The trail is well-marked with signs indicating distances and difficulty levels. It’s suitable for hikers of all skill levels, although some sections may be steep and rugged. The full hike from Monterosso al Mare to Riomaggiore is 7 miles (11 km) and takes about 5-6 hours to complete, depending on your pace and any stops along the way.

You don’t have to do the full trail as you can opt to do shorter portions of the Blue Trail. The trail takes you through each of the five villages so you can pick a village to start and stop. Here are the most popular short trails:

• Riomaggiore to Manarola (known as Via dell’Amore): Due to landslides, this trail has been closed for a while but will reopen July 2024.
• Monterosso to Vernazza: 3.5 km long moderate hike, takes 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on the number of stops you make.
• Vernazza to Corniglia – 3.5 km long and it takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to complete.

Note: You need a Cinque Terre Trail Pass to access the trails.

3. Relax on the Beach in Monterosso

Cinque Terre boasts several beautiful spots where visitors can soak up the sun and swim in the crystal-clear waters. If you’re looking for an actual beach, I recommend Monterosso al Mare. It has the largest beach in Cinque Terre and there are even beach chairs available for rental. Monteresso al Mare’s beach is known as Spiaggia di Fegina and it is just steps away from the Monteresso train station.

4. Go on a Boat Tour

A great way to see Cinque Terre is by boat! Boat trips offer stunning views of the villages perched on the cliffs, hidden coves, and secluded beaches. Sunset cruises are great for capturing unforgettable views of the coast bathed in golden light!

5. Enjoy lunch with a view at Nessum Dorma

One of the most iconic views in Cinque Terre can be enjoyed over bruschetta and drinks. Nessum Dorma offers an amazing panoramic view of Manarola while serving delicious small bites including bruschetta, charcuterie platters, and local wine. Dining here is one of the best things to do in Cinque Terre and its popularity has soared over the last few years! I highly recommend getting on the wait list right at the opening time the day of.

Tip: Download the Nessum Dorma app to get in line virtually when the restaurant opens. They don’t take reservations.

6. Take a Pesto Making Class

Pesto sauce is a staple of Ligurian cuisine, and it’s often served with pasta dishes such as trofie or trenette. Locals in Cinque Terre and the surrounding area have been making pesto for generations, using traditional methods passed down through families. Many restaurants and trattorias in Cinque Terre feature pesto on their menus, often served with freshly made pasta or drizzled over grilled fish or vegetables.

7. Try Cinque Terre Wine

Did you know that Cinque Terre has terraced vineyards along its cliffs? Winemaking here is no feat and you have to try the local wines. There are two main local wines: the Cinque Terre DOC and the Sciacchetrà DOC.

8. Enjoy the calm in Corniglia

Corniglia is not like the other towns…and for better and for worse. First, unlike the other towns, to get to the center of Corniglia you have to climb up 365 steps. At the same time, it is the least visited and where to get away from crowds and enjoy the calm.

Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets of Corniglia and admire its charming pastel-colored houses, ancient buildings, and picturesque squares. Visit the Church of San Pietro and enjoy the panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. Unlike the other villages, Corniglia is situated on a cliff overlooking the sea, providing stunning views of the coastline.

9. Visit Doria Castle in Vernazza

Doria Castle is perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the village of Vernazza. Its strategic position provides panoramic views of the coastline and surrounding landscape. The castle dates back to the 11th century when it was built as a defensive structure to protect the village from pirate attacks. Today, Doria Castle is open to visitors who can explore its historic premises and enjoy panoramic views from its ramparts. You can climb up to the castle via a series of steps and pathways and take in breathtaking vistas of Vernazza and the surrounding coastline.

10. Enjoy apertivo at Piazza Marconi in Vernazza

Piazza Marconi is the main square in Vernazza and you can enjoy views of Vernaza’s picturesque harbor. The square is relatively small but bustling with activity. Colorful buildings, shops, cafes, and restaurants surround the square, giving it a vibrant and lively atmosphere. It is a great spot to enjoy apertivo at the outdoor seating at the cafes and restaurants, making it an ideal spot for people-watching and soaking up the village ambiance.

11. Swim in natural pools in Vernazza and Manorola

Although Monterosso is the only village with a real sandy beach, you can still sunbathe and swim in natural pools in both Vernazza and Manarola. The Vernazza and Manarola Harbor are great places to swim and sunbathe.

12. See the sunset in Manarola

Watching the sunset in Manarola is a magical experience. Manarola offers several vantage points from which to watch the sunset but my favorite is the viewpoint near Nessun Dorma. Make sure to get there early to secure a good spot. After the sun has set, stick around for twilight, when the sky takes on a deep blue hue and the lights of the village start to twinkle. It’s a magical time to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the peacefulness of the evening.

13. Try a seafood cone at Tutti Fritti in Riomaggiore

In Cinque Terre, particularly in the village of Riomaggiore, it’s common to find local seafood delicacies served in a cone-shaped container. These seafood cones are a popular and convenient way to enjoy fresh seafood while exploring the picturesque coastal villages. Tutti Fritti is a great place in Riomaggiore to get fried seafood including fried fish fillets, shrimp, calamari rings, and other seafood items.

14. Climb on the rocks in Riomaggiore

One of the best views in Cinque Terre can be seen from the rocks in Riomaggiore. Head to the harbor of Riomaggiore and climb up some steps that will lead you to the path to the rocks! The view from the rocks is fantastic and you’ll get a great view of Riomaggiore.

How To Get Around Puerto Rico

The best way to get around Puerto Rico is by driving! I highly suggest renting a vehicle with high clearance and 4WD as the roads in Puerto Rico can sometimes be rough. There are some portions where the road is not in the best condition or the roads are very narrow so I would drive with caution. I definitely do not want to discourage you on driving because it is the best way to see the island. The scenic beauty around the island is worth the drive!

Many people only stay in San Juan when they visit Puerto Rico and they are missing out! Although San Juan is a lot of fun, I definitely recommend venturing out of the capital city and seeing all that the island has to offer. You wouldn’t have experienced the real Puerto Rico if you only stay in one place!

Puerto Rico Itinerary

Day 1: San Juan

Start your Puerto Rico trip by spending time in San Juan! If you’re flying into Puerto Rico, chances are that you’re flying into the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan. The airport is about 30 minutes from Old San Juan and you can either pick up your rental car at the airport when you land or you can use a rideshare to get to Old San Juan. I chose to use Uber to get to Old San Juan because parking could be tricky, and I picked up my rental car later when I was leaving the city.

Old San Juan is a very charming and colorful place, and it is the perfect first stop on your Puerto Rico Itinerary. There is a lot to see, but honestly you only need one day here as most of it is sightseeing. Here are some spots you shouldn’t miss in Old San Juan:

• Fortaleza Street: Street leading up to the Governor’s Mansion that often has colorful displays of either umbrellas or Puerto Rican flag
• Cuartel de Ballaja: Former military barracks that serves as multipurpose building today
• Hotel El Convento: Stay at this luxury hotel in Old San Juan or stop by for food and drinks
• El Morro: Learn about the history of a historical fort and its importance to Puerto Rico
• Calle Imperial: Great spot to take a photo with the Puerto Rican flag
• Cementerio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi: This cemetery is the final resting place of many of PR’s most prominent natives and residents. This cemetery also offers sweeping ocean views!

I highly recommend dining at Barrachina. It is a very popular restaurant serving Puerto Rican specialties and it claims to have invented the pina colada! The food and pina colada (had to order one) were absolutely delicious.

Day 2 – 3: Aguadilla

Next on the Puerto Rico itinerary is Aguadilla! Leave Old San Juan early in the morning and head to Aguadilla. Pick up your rental car (if you haven’t already) and head west to the beaches of Aguadilla. It is a 2 hour drive from San Juan to Aguadilla and you’ll be on a major interstate so the ride should be smooth.

On your way to Aguadilla, visit Frutos del Guacabo which is a family-owned and operated farm located in Manatí. You can visit and tour the farm to learn about sustainable farming and what it means to be farm-to-table. They also serve a delicious organic meal!

While you’re in the Manatí, make sure to stop at Mar Chiquita Beach and Los Tubos Beach which are two of the best beaches in Puerto Rico!

There is also an amazing viewpoint at Mirador de Guajataca.

Aguadilla is known for its beautiful beaches! Here are some spots in Aguadilla that you should definitely check out:

• Survival Beach: Take a fun hike to a secret beach
• Crash Boat Beach: You can find colorful rowboats at this beach
• Las Ruinas Faro de La Ponderosa: Check out these ruins in Aguadilla!
• Avion Abandonado: Climb inside an abandoned plane

Don’t miss watching the sunset from the beaches of Aguadilla! My favorite sunset spot is Playa Pena Blanca Beach.

Day 4 – 5: San Sebastian, Cabo Rojo, and La Parguera

On Day 4, drive to San Sebastian to see some beautiful waterfalls! It is about a 30 minute drive from Aguadilla and you can find two waterfalls here. Gozalandia Falls is one of the most beautiful places in Puerto Rico! You can actually find two waterfalls here. There is an official parking lot so be sure to bring cash ($10) for parking. The hikes to the falls are short and easy. Bring your bathing suit to swim here!

After your morning adventure at Gozalandia Falls, head south to Rojo Cabo. It is about an hour and a half from the waterfalls are there are two main attractions in this area.

First up is Salinas de Cabo Rojo! Did you know there are salt flats in Puerto Rico? They even turn pink on a sunny day. To visit these salt flats, park your car at Centro Interpretativo Las Salinas and walk along the road until you see an opening to the fence to the salt flats. It is free to visit but please do be respectful and leave no trace! Do not litter as throwing trash into the salt flats ruins the salt.

Then, drive just a little further south to Faro Los Morrillos. The views from this lighthouse are stunning! There are trails that takes you along the ocean cliffs and there are several unique rock formations you can spot from here. If you have extra time and want to go for a swim, head to Playa Sucia nearby for an isolated and picturesque beach with views of the lighthouse! At the end of the day, drive 45 minutes from Cabo Rojo to the town of La Parguera.

The town of La Parguera is small and quaint but it is the gateway to incredible nature! Did you know that it is a bioluminescent bay? The waters near La Parguera glow due to the microorganisms in the water, and many tour companies offer kayak tours or boat excursions to explore the bay’s waters! I highly suggest booking a tour since you can only see the waters glow at night.

Day 6: La Parguera, Yauco, and Ponce

Start your day off by exploring the town of La Parguera! There are several great restaurants and boutiques in town that you should check out. I also recommend taking a trip to Cayo Caracoles which is a mangrove forest near La Parguera. You can get a boat at Gina’s Johnny’s Boats in town to take you there. You can get a tour and guide as well!

Depart La Parguera for the city of Yauco and stop by Finca El Girasol on the way. Finca El Girasol is a beautiful field of sunflowers and makes a fun stop. It is only Take a quick detour here and snap some photos with the sunflowers.

Then, continue to the city of Yauco! Yauco is a super colorful city and it is a fun place to simply walk around. Yauco is also another quick stop and then you’ll leave for the city of Ponce.

Ponce is one of Puerto Rico’s largest cities and there’s plenty to do here! I suggest taking a walking tour through town and admiring the beautiful architecture around town. Some of the attractions you shouldn’t miss include:

• Museo de Arte de Ponce: One of the best art museums in Puerto Rico with an extensive collection of over 4,500 pieces, consisting of paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, photographs/video, and more!
• Plaza Las Delicias: The main plaza in Ponce with ornate buildings and shady trees – be sure to visit Parque de Bombas, Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the many cafes and restaurants around the square!
• Castillo Serrallés: A grand estate with sweeping views of Ponce that once belonged to owners of the Don Q rum distillery! Today, you can take a tour to see the ornate architecture, beautiful gardens, and learn about how the family lived and grew their business.
• La Guancha: Popular and picturesque seaside boardwalk lined with restaurants and kiosks selling food and beverages.
• Hacienda Buena Vista: Visit this coffee plantation to learn about how coffee was grown and processed in the 19th century

Day 7: El Yunque National Forest

Depart Ponce early in the morning for El Yunque National Forest! It is about a 2.5 hours drive, but there is a super cool spot you should stop by on the way to the rainforest. The stop is called La Curva del Arbol and it is a scenic overlook with a swing! This is a very popular photo spot in Puerto Rico and the view is absolutely worth the detour.

It is 50 minutes from Ponce to the swing and then 1.5 hours from the swing to the entrance of El Yunque National Forest.

El Yunque National Forest is actually one of the smallest rainforests in the world, but one of the most biologically diverse. Come experience the beauty of the national rainforest and do go chasing waterfalls!

Depending on when your flight is, you can either head to the airport after visiting El Yunque National Forest or head back to San Juan and spend the night there if your flight is the next day!

Cinque Terre is not one town but rather comprised of five charming coastal villages. When you’re looking for places to stay in Cinque Terre, you need to search by village rather than “Cinque Terre”. It is a national park that is bordered by La Spezia to the south and Levanto to the north. Here are the five villages from north to south!

• Monterosso al Mare
• Vernazza
• Corniglia
• Manarola
• Riomaggiore

How to Get Around Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is actually very easy to get around! All five villages are connected by train and the train ride between each town is about 5 minutes. The Cinque Terre Express is the regional train line and it is easy to hop between towns. The center of the towns is also just minutes walk away from the train stations making train travel the best option to get around Cinque Terre,

Since it is so convenient to visit the different villages of Cinque Terre, I suggest picking one place as the home base and then exploring the rest of the Cinque Terre towns from there. 

Tip: Get the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card for unlimited train rides in Cinque Terre. These tickets can be purchased from Trenitalia authorized ticket offices, self-service ticket machines in stations in La Spezia and Cinque Terre region, the Trenitalia App, Cinque Terre National Park sales points, and online.

Best Towns to Stay in Cinque Terre

Choosing the best town to stay in Cinque Terre depends on your preferences, budget, and travel style. Each of the five villages has its unique charm and attractions, so here’s an overview to help you decide:

Monterosso al Mare: The Beachy One

This is the largest and most tourist-friendly village in Cinque Terre, making it a popular choice for visitors. It has the widest range of accommodations, including hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals. The sandy beach and lively atmosphere make it a great option for families and those seeking a more resort-like experience. Another plus about staying in Monterosso is that you won’t have to climb steep hills to get to your accommodation as this town isn’t built on a high cliff.

(Midrange) Affittacamere Lo Scoglio

Located just a 5-minute walk from Monterosso Train Station, Affittacamere Lo Scoglio is set in front of Fegina Beach. It offers air-conditioned rooms with a small fridge and TV. Rooms at Lo Scoglio overlook the garden or the sea. They are cool and comfortable with tiled floors and stylish bathrooms. Lo Scoglio Affittacamere is next to the Giant’s statue, a symbol of Monterosso al Mare.

(Midrange) B&B Il Parco

B&B Il Parco is a 10-minute walk from the nearest beach in Monterosso. It provides a sun terrace, an outdoor pool with sun loungers and sea-view accommodation. Surrounded by a lush garden with olive groves and flowers, rooms at this family-run accommodation are elegantly furnished and air-conditioned. All come with an LCD TV and a balcony offering partial or full sea views.

(Budget) Affittacamere Da Cesare: If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, Affittacamere Da Cesare offers comfortable guest rooms with a welcoming atmosphere. It is family-owned and you can feel the hospitality of the hosts! It’s located near the beach and the train station, making it convenient for exploring Monterosso and the surrounding areas.

Vernazza: The Picturesque One

With its picturesque harbor, colorful houses, and scenic waterfront promenade, Vernazza is often considered one of the most beautiful villages in Cinque Terre. (Budget) Albergo Barbara

Situated near the Vernazza harbor, Albergo Barbara is a family-run hotel that provides a warm and welcoming experience for guests. It is just steps from the sea! The hotel offers comfortable rooms with modern amenities and a terrace with panoramic views.

Corniglia: The Quiet and Peaceful One

Situated high on a cliff, Corniglia is the smallest and quietest of the Cinque Terre villages. It offers a more relaxed and secluded atmosphere compared to the other towns. Accommodations here are limited but include a few small hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. Corniglia is a great choice for those seeking peace and tranquility away from the crowds. However, I personally would not recommend staying in Corniglia as you need to climb over 350 steps from the train station to get to town. There is a shuttle but that shuttle gets packed during peak travel season!

(Midrange) Affittacamere Le Terrazze

(Midrange) Affittacamere Arbasia De Ma

Arbasia De Ma offers basic rooms overlooking the sea. The rooms of Affittacamere Arbasia De Ma, Terre Marine offer views of the Ligurian Sea and come with an equipped kitchenette and a terrace.

Manarola: The Central One

Known for its iconic views and charming streets, Manarola is a popular choice for visitors to Cinque Terre. La Toretta Lodge also offers a hot tub on the property and breakfast is provided every morning.

(Luxury) Il Sogno di Manarola by The First

This accommodation is one of the best places to stay in Manarola! It offers a beautiful view of Manarola. Il Sogno di Manarola by The First’s prominent feature is the rooftop terrace, which offers a stunning 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

(Midrange) Affittacamere San Giorgio

You’ll find stunning sea views at Affittacamere San Giorgio! The apartment is spacious and air-conditioned and offers free WiFi. Although it is a slight trek, the phenomenal views over Manarola is worth the climb.

Riomaggiore: The Lively One

The southernmost village in Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore is known for its steep cliffs, colorful houses, and vibrant atmosphere. It offers a range of accommodations, including hotels, guesthouses, and apartments. Riomaggiore is a great choice for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the local culture and nightlife. If you’re looking for nightlife, this is your best bet in the Cinque Terre as the other towns get quiet after dark.

Best Hotels in Riomaggiore

(Luxury) Crêuza de Mä

Boasting a seafront location in Riomaggiore, Crêuza De Mä offers multiple terraces and a solarium, scenic gardens, a heated hot tub, and outdoor showers. Free WiFi is available throughout the property. Each room offers sea views, air conditioning, a coffee machine, a free mini-bar, and a flat-screen TV. The luxurious property is immersed in greenery, a short walking distance to restaurants, cafés, and an ice-cream parlor.

(Midrange) Ai Pesci Room Rental

Ai Pesci Room Rental is a highly-rated accommodation in Riomaggiore! With sea views, all guest rooms feature air conditioning and a flat-screen TV. You can choose to stay in a room with a balcony and there is also a rooftop where you can enjoy the postcard views of Riomaggiore.

(Midrange) Scorci Di Mare

Scorci Di Mare is a 14th-century building on Riomaggiore’s rocky coast. It offers sea-view rooms with modern furnishings and tiles. Some have a balcony and a kitchenette. The town center, full of restaurants and bars, can be reached by climbing a flight of steps near the Scorci Di Mare. The Riomaggiore train station is about 1000 ft away.

Consider Staying in La Spezia…

Another option is to stay in the town of La Spezia. Although La Spezia is not part of Cinque Terre, it is the gateway to Cinque Terre. La Spezia serves as a convenient base for exploring the Cinque Terre region, offering a wider range of accommodations and amenities compared to the smaller villages. Staying in La Spezia is often more affordable than staying directly in the Cinque Terre villages, especially during peak tourist season. You can enjoy cost savings without sacrificing convenience or comfort by staying in La Spezia.

In addition to accommodation, La Spezia offers a wide range of amenities and services, including restaurants, cafes, shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, and banks. You’ll find everything you need for a comfortable and convenient stay in the larger city. If you have large luggage or a rental car, I highly recommend staying in La Spezia as it is much easier to accommodate than Cinque Terre.

Best Hotels in La Spezia

(Luxury) Hotel NH La Spezia

This modern hotel offers comfortable rooms and excellent amenities and 5 minutes’ walk from the harbor with links to the Cinque Terre UNESCO Site. The main train station and the shopping area are just a 20-minute stroll away or can be reached via the frequent buses that stop near the hotel. The location makes it easy to explore Cinque Terre and other nearby attractions.

(Midrange) Affittacamere Casa Dane’

If you prefer a more intimate option, consider staying at Casa Dane’. Affittacamere Casa Dane’ offers colorfully decorated rooms with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and a flat-screen TV. The property is just 100 meters from La Spezia Train Station. Casa Dane also offers free bikes for exploring La Spezia city center. The surrounding area is full of shops, bars and restaurants.

(Budget) La Taverna del Metallo Rooms

La Taverna del Metallo offers a budget-friendly option in La Spezia. The units in the inn are complete with a private bathroom, flat-screen TV, air conditioning, and free WiFi and some rooms are fitted with a balcony.

How to Get to Lake Como

The nearest major airport to Lake Como is Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of the lake. From the airport, you can take a direct train to Como or use other transportation options such as buses, taxis, or rental cars to reach your desired destination on Lake Como.

Best Towns to Stay in Lake Como

There are numerous towns on Lake Como, but the best towns to stay at are those easily accessible and well connected to other Lake Como attractions. If you’re looking at where to stay in Lake Como without a car, then these are also the ideal towns to stay!

Here are the top towns to consider for accommodation based on my experience:

Como: The largest town on Lake Como, Como offers a mix of history, culture, and modern amenities. Como can be reached by a direct train from Milan! Visitors can explore attractions such as the Como Cathedral, the historic center with its charming squares and shops, and the scenic waterfront promenade. Como also has a wide selection of hotels, restaurants, and shops, making it a convenient base for exploring the lake and surrounding area.

Varenna: Varenna is another picturesque town on Lake Como that can easily be accessible by train as well. Nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Varenna features narrow alleys, historic churches, and villas. There are stunning views of the lake and mountains from Varenna! Varenna offers a range of accommodation options, including hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals, with many properties overlooking the lake.

Bellagio: Often referred to as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” Bellagio is one of the most popular towns on the lake. It’s known for its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Bellagio offers a range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to cozy bed and breakfasts. It’s also a great base for exploring other parts of the lake, with regular ferry services to and from nearby towns such as Varenna and Menaggio.

Best Hotels in Como

As mentioned earlier, Como is one of the most accessible towns on Lake Como and can be reached within an hour’s train ride from Milan. From Como, you can easily reach any other town on Lake Como using the public ferry, train, and bus. Find out where to stay in Lake Como in the town of Como.

Luxury: Vista Palazzo

Vista Palazzo is a high-end hotel that is within a 5-minute walk of both Lago Como train station and Como Cathedral. It is the only five-star luxury hotel in the city center of Como and is also just steps from the shores of Lake Como. You have the best of both worlds at Vista Palazzo!

Midrange: Hilton Lake Como

Hilton Lake Como is a polished hotel that is 1 km from both the Como San Giovanni train station and Villa Olmo, an 18th-century manor with lakefront gardens. It is the first Hilton hotel in the Lake Como region and a great option if you’re a Hilton Honors member to earn and/or redeem points! It features a rooftop infinity pool and several restaurants and bars.

Budget: Ostello Bello Lake Como

Ostello Bello Lake Como is a laid-back hostel that is a 3-minute walk from the banks of Lake Como, an 8-minute walk from Como San Giovanni train station, and a 10-minute walk from Como Cathedral. It features basic private rooms, and mixed-gender and female-only dorms. A breakfast buffet, dinner, and tea and coffee are all included, and there’s free food in a communal kitchen. Other amenities consist of a roof terrace and a garden with hammocks.

Budget: Residence Diaz

Residence Diaz is a small 15th-century building in Como’s historical center. It offers apartments with a kitchen and free WiFi. All air-conditioned, apartments feature a living area with a flat-screen TV, an equipped kitchenette with a microwave, and a kettle. Diaz Residence is just a few steps from Como’s many historic and cultural attractions.

Best Hotels in Varenna

If you only have one day in Verona, here is how to best spend a day in this beautiful city!

Morning in Verona

8:00 AM: Breakfast at Cafe Carducci

Start your one day in Verona with breakfast at Cafe Carducci! Cafe Carducci is a historical restaurant in historic Verona that is a great breakfast place. The restaurant is cozy with a great ambiance. Be sure to grab some coffee, and brioche pastry here! You also have to try their omelets – they are divine.

9:00 AM: Visit Juliet’s House

After breakfast, head to Juliet’s House or Casa di Giulietta. This is the most popular attraction to visit so you want to get there at opening time! This is a must visit if you only have one day in Verona.

This house is traditionally believed to have belonged to the Capello family, who might have inspired William Shakespeare’s famous play “Romeo and Juliet.” Capello is a name similar to the Italian version of “Capulet” which is Capelletti. The house dates back to the 13th century but the famous balcony wasn’t added until the 20th century. While the historical connection to the Capello family is uncertain, the house has become a symbol of the tragic love story.

It was also made popular from the movie, Letters to Juliet, where an American woman travels to Verona and visits Juliet’s House and discovers a decades-old letter for Juliet that was unanswered. Of course, she reunites the lovers in the end and she ends up finding love herself, but the movie highlights the custom of leaving a letter for Juliet. People can drop off letters concerning love, heartbreak, advice, etc., and get a response from the secretaries of Juliet.

When you visit, you can drop off your very own letter to Juliet! I’ve actually done it twice and have gotten responses each time.

The attraction features a courtyard with a statue of Juliet and a museum with exhibits related to the play, including costumes and props from various stage productions of “Romeo and Juliet.” There is a tradition of rubbing the right breast of the statue in the courtyard for good luck in love.

The courtyard is free to visit but the museum and access to the balcony have an entrance fee. If you’re in Verona for a day, I suggest getting the 24-Hour Verona Card as it includes many of the attractions on this itinerary and public transport.

Note: Juliet’s House is closed on Mondays.

10:00 AM: Climb Torre dei Lamberti

After visiting Juliet’s House, head to Torre dei Lamberti which is a medieval tower located in the historic center of Verona, Italy. This tower is one of the highest structures in Verona and offers panoramic views of the city. You can climb to the top using the staircase or an elevator! The viewing platform on the tower offers breathtaking views of Verona and its surrounding landscape, including the Adige River and the historic architecture of the city.

Entrance to Torre dei Lamberti is also included in the 24-Hour Verona Card as mentioned earlier.

11:00 AM: Stroll and shop around Piazza del Erbe

After climbing Torre dei Lamberti, head down to the square the tower is located at which is the famous Piazza del Erbe.

The square is surrounded by historic buildings and colorful facades and is known for its vibrant market and lively atmosphere. Piazza del Erbe is known for its outdoor market, where vendors sell a variety of products such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, and local crafts. The market is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a lively and colorful environment.

As you’re exploring Piazza del Erbe, make sure to snap a photo in front of the fountain in the center! This is the Madonna Verona Fountain which is a beautiful Renaissance fountain built in 1368 that features a statue of Madonna Verona, the symbolic protector of the city.

Afternoon in Verona

12:00 PM: Lunch at Osteria Giulietta e Romeo

Now it is time for lunch! Head to Osteria Giulietta e Romeo for traditional Veronese cuisine. Osteria Giulietta e Romeo is located in the heart of Verona and offers Veronese cuisine dishes such as pasta e fasoi, bigoli all’asino, pappardelle all’anitra, gnocchi al ragù, and pastisada de caval con polenta.

They serve a wide variety of first and second courses and over 150 wine choices. I ordered a pumpkin tortellini as the first course and a chicken with roasted potatoes dish for the second and both were delicious! I’ve been here multiple times and highly recommend it as a lunch spot.

1:00 PM Arena di Verona

After lunch, it is time to tour Arena di Verona!

The Arena di Verona is a Roman amphitheater located in Verona and it is one of the best-preserved ancient amphitheaters in the world! It is known for its stunning architecture and cultural significance. This is a must-visit for your one day in Verona.

It was built around 30 AD during the Roman Empire and it is believed to have been used for gladiator contests and public spectacles such as animal hunts and mock sea battles.

Today, the Arena di Verona is best known for its opera performances. The first opera was performed there in 1913, and since then, the arena has become a world-famous venue for opera productions. The open-air setting and acoustics of the arena create a unique and enchanting experience. If you’re visiting during the summer months from June to September, be sure to look into attending a performance at the arena!

You can get priority entrance to the Arena di Verona with the 24-Hour Verona Card which is another reason to get the travel pass!

2:30 PM: Walk across Ponte di Castelvecchio

Ponte di Castelvecchio is a historic and notable bridge in Verona that is just a 5-minute walk from Arena di Verona. It spans the Adige River in Verona, connecting the eastern and western parts of the city. It is free to visit and it is a beautiful walk on the bridge!

3:00 PM Visit the Verona Cathedral

The Verona Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare, is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the historic city of Verona, Italy. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is the seat of the bishop of Verona. The cathedral is a significant religious and architectural landmark, showcasing a mix of different styles due to its long construction history.

The inside of the church is lavish and features frescoed interiors and artwork. The cathedral is open to visitors.

3:30 PM Mid-day Break

Take a mid-day break and grab a drink or bite at the Bar at the Cathedral Cafe. It is located just across from the Verona Cathedral and features coffees and pastries in a quaint garden setting.

4:00 PM: Stroll across Ponte Pietra

The Ponte Pietra is a Roman arch bridge that spans the Adige River and is one of the oldest and most iconic bridges in Verona. It offers stunning views of the Adige River, the city of Verona, and the surrounding hills. The picturesque setting makes it a popular spot to take photos as well!

4:30 PM: Visit Giusti Garden

During your one day in Verona, you have to visit the beautiful Giusti Garden! It is a historic Renaissance garden located in the heart of Verona, Italy. Established in the 16th century, the garden is renowned for its architectural features, statues and sculptures, meticulously designed layout, and scenic beauty. It is one of the oldest gardens of its kind in Italy and has been well-preserved over the centuries.

5:30 PM: Watch sunset at Castel San Pietro

Castel San Pietro provides the best views in all of Verona. You want to head up to this hilltop fortress before sunset to watch the city transform from day to night. It is free to visit and truly has a beautiful view! You need to witness the sunset here during your one day in Verona!

7:00 PM: Dinner at Osteria il Ciottolo

After watching sunset at Castel San Pietro, grab dinner at Osteria il Ciottolo. This spot is a local favorite thus you won’t find a tourist menu here! This restaurant serves traditional Veronese pasta and game dishes. It interior of the restaurant is cozy and has a charming atmosphere.

8:30 PM: Gelato at Gelateria La Romana

End your one day in Verona with gelato at one of the best gelato shops in Italy! I’ve had my fair share of gelato and Gelateria La Romana is one of the best. Gelateria La Roman was born in the heart of the historic center of Rimini in 1947, receiving the name of the founder’s daughter. It opened its doors in Verona in 2013 and has now quickly expanded to other locations.

I love that they fill the bottom of their cones with melted chocolate and this is my favorite gelato shop in Verona!

Santuario Madonna della Corona

Padua

Riad Goloboy is part of a complex of two 19th century aristocratic houses lovingly restored by art collector and interior designer Beatrice Faujas. This is a very beautiful riad with plenty of photo opportunities! The colorful works of art by Henri Matisse and Serge Poliakoff inspired the joyous hues found around the riad. Getting to Peru

The best way to get to Peru is to fly into the Lima airport, Jorge Chávez International Airport, as it is Peru’s main international and domestic airport and a hub for several airlines. I found many cheap flights to Lima on both Spirit and JetBlue from the U.S. In the end, I flew from Atlanta to Lima for around $450 total (including a checked bag) on Spirit. I’ve flown Spirit both domestically and internationally multiple times, and the experience is never as bad as some people make it out to be. Sure, the legroom is smaller and the seat is slightly uncomfortable, but I thought it was well worth the savings (the other flights were $800+). My suggestion is to check Google Flights on a regular basis and play around with some dates. You might get lucky and snag a cheap deal on a non-low-cost carrier.

Food in Peru

You are in for a treat because Peru has the most delicious cuisine! I miss Peruvian food so much, and I wish I could just fly back for a meal. Here are some of my favorite dishes:

• Lomo Saltado: a stir fry that typically combines marinated strips of sirloin with onions, tomatoes, french fries, and spices, and is served with rice (Note: I actually don’t eat beef so I ordered the pollo saltado below)
• Pollo Saltado: Lomo Saltado but with chicken instead of beef
• Aji de Gallina: shredded chicken stew cooked with yellow chili peppers, walnuts, spices, garlic, and turmeric
• Pollo a la Brasa: a classic roast chicken with a Peruvian twist
• Papa a la huancaina: boiled yellow potatoes in a spicy, creamy sauce
• Arroz Chaufa: Peruvian-styled fried rice
• Pisco: the national drink of Peru – a must-try

Of course, there are other famous Peruvian dishes such as ceviche, alpaca burger, and cuy (guinea pig), but I did not try these plates as I am not an adventurous eater You’ll just have to let me know in the comments below how you liked these!

Transportation in Peru

Between Cities

Traditional Bus

Getting around Peru is fairly easy, and the most popular way to get between cities is by bus. There are several reputable bus companies such as Cruz del Sur, Ormeño, and Oltursa that run the routes between different Peruvian cities, and you will definitely find many options for the popular tourist routes. I used Cruz del Sur for a roundtrip route from Lima to Huaraz, with an overnight return leg, and had a great experience. The bus was roomy and comfortable with large leather seats that recline all the way. For the overnight leg, the bus was exactly the same, and blankets and breakfast were provided as well. It was $25 roundtrip/person for that route so the price is reasonable but not cheap.

Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

Additionally, there is a hop-on-hop-off bus company called PeruHop that comes highly recommended by other travelers. I actually used PeruHop for most of my journey. PeruHop offers multiple routes through Peru and Bolivia, and the routes are all available on their website.

I chose the Full South to Cusco route that took me from Lima to Cusco with multiple options to stop in between. I largely based my Peru itinerary on the route chosen. My favorite part about the hop-on-hop-off bus service was that you could spend as many days in a place as you want, or you could elect to completely skip getting off the bus at a certain stop. I liked having the flexibility of still deciding my schedule and itinerary! Another plus was that PeruHop has additional mini-excursions and sightseeing tours included in the route. For example, we got to go Pisco tasting, see the Nazca Lines, and visit the Paracas National Reserve.

Of course, you don’t need to use PeruHop and could book separate buses or private transports for your entire trip, but I thought PeruHop certainly made traveling through Peru easier for me.

Colectivo Taxi

In Cusco, there are special “colectivo” taxis that locals use that will take you to the neighboring towns near Cusco such as Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Chincero, and Maras for a super cheap price (10 – 20 soles depending on where you go). These colectivo taxis are basically large, shared vans. They don’t have set schedules and leave as soon as the taxi is completely full. I waited about 20 minutes for mine to get full because I was the first passenger in my colectivo.

Plane

There are options to fly between Peruvian cities, but I found it easier just to take buses between cities. The routes I chose were shorter, and there was greater flexibility for departures by taking a bus. Most airports in Peru are smaller, regional airports, the major ones being in Lima, Cusco, and Arequipa. I did fly from Cusco to Lima though because the flight was fairly inexpensive and only took 1.5 hours vs having to take a long bus from Cusco back to Lima.

Within Cities

Walking is the best way to get around in most cities since the attractions and sites are within walking distance from the main squares. I typically stayed near the Plaza de Armas “main square” of each city, and I suggest that you to search for central accommodations as well. The prices are quite reasonable, and you’ll be within walking distance of most restaurants, attractions, and sights. In Lima, I did use Uber as the city is more spread out, but the rides were cheap (~$3 ride).

3 Week Peru Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Lima, Peru

This is the start of your Peru itinerary! The first day is your travel day to Peru. As mentioned earlier, most international flights come into the Lima airport, and typically, they land late in the evening. The first day will really be for traveling to Peru and then settling into your accommodation in Lima. I chose to stay in the Miraflores district of Lima and used Airport Express Lima to get to my accommodation.

However, if you’re arriving very late and need sleep immediately, I suggest staying at Holiday Inn Lima Airport which is just across the street from the airport.

Airport Express Lima is the official airport shuttle, and it runs once an hour from the Lima airport to Miraflores with multiple stops. I looked at the stops online ahead of time and found a drop-off point that was just a few minutes walk from my accommodation. I thought Airport Express Lima was really convenient, comfortable, and not too costly ($8 USD/person).

Day 2: Lima to Huaraz

Today is another mostly travel day as you travel from Lima to Huaraz. I used Uber to get from my hotel in Miraflores to the Cruz del Sur bus station. The bus ride was quite comfortable, and I got to see the ever-changing surroundings. I left around 9:30 AM and arrived in Huaraz around 6:00 PM, making it an 8.5-hour ride. The fare also included lunch which was served on the bus (it was quite delicious).

Huaraz Hotel Recommendation:

• Casa Tribu

Day 3: Huaraz

I highly recommend spending at least one day in Huaraz before hiking Laguna 69. In order to acclimatize to the altitude, you should try and spend as much time in Huaraz as you can. The one mistake I made in my Peru itinerary was not giving myself more time in Huaraz. I actually did not give myself this extra day in Huaraz. I felt the difference as soon as I got off the bus in Huaraz – the air felt thinner and I felt my breathing get heavier and heavier with every step I took. Take this day to prepare for the hike tomorrow. Walk around town and go grocery shopping for food for the hike. Make sure you have your transport to Laguna 69 booked whether it be a tour or by private transit. Don’t forget to get plenty of rest!

Day 4: Hike Laguna 69

I decided to use a tour for a guided hike of Laguna 69 and I highly recommend that you book a full-day tour from Huaraz.

For my tour, they picked us up around 5 AM. From there, it was another 3-hour journey to the trailhead. We stopped for breakfast along the way and loaded up on carbs to prepare ourselves. The hike took a total of 6 hours roundtrip. It took 3 hours to ascend, 2 hours to descend, and an hour break in between. Then we headed straight back to Huaraz. We were back in Huaraz by dinner time. I had a delicious dinner at Trivio Resto Bar before my night bus back to Lima. The seats reclined all the way back, and we were given pillows and blankets for a good night’s rest.

Day 5: Lima

Today will be all about exploring the capital of Peru! There’s so much to see in Lima, and this will be the only full day in Lima before you depart again. Don’t worry, you’ll be spending more time in Lima at the end of the trip so no need to rush. I recommend spending this day exploring the districts of Miraflores and Barranco and enjoying the beautiful coastline. I do have two restaurant recommendations: Buenavista Cafe for lunch and Tanta for dinner – both places were absolutely delicious.

Day 6: Lima to Paracas

As mentioned earlier, I used a company called PeruHop to travel between most of the cities in Peru and based my itinerary largely on my chosen route. It was an early morning pickup in Lima at a previously set location, and I got off the bus at Paracas in the late afternoon.

For the remainder of the evening in Paracas, I recommend taking a walk along the beach, watching the sunset, and enjoying some fresh seafood caught by the local fishermen as it will be another early and exciting morning the next day (do you see a pattern here )

Day 7: Ballestas Islands, Paracas National Reserve, and Huacachina

Ballestas Islands

Just off the coast of Paracas, Ballestas Islands (also known as Poor Man’s Galapagos) is full of wildlife such as sea lions, penguins, and thousands of species of birds. Be sure not to miss taking a tour of the islands while you’re in Paracas. The tour is inexpensive and only takes 2 hours. If you’re using PeruHop, I suggest doing the 8 AM tour to catch the 11 AM free tour of the Paracas National Reserve offered by PeruHop. Get to the docks in Paracas by 7:45 AM for the tour of the Ballestas Islands. Don’t buy your tickets online as there are vendors selling tickets for about 35 soles at the docks.

Paracas National Reserve

After the tour of the Ballesta Islands, you will get to see where the desert meets the sea. Paracas National Reserve is a protected wildlife area with several striking viewpoints of the ocean. The roads are unpaved and much of the reserve is covered by desert, so the only way to visit is with a guide or tour, but luckily PeruHop will take you straight to the most iconic viewpoints. If you’re not using PeruHop, I highly suggest booking a tour in town (there are many tour operators in Paracas).

Huacachina

After the tour of Paracas National Reserve, you’re on the road again to Huacachina. It is about a 1.5 hour drive, so you’ll arrive in the mid-afternoon. If you like adventure, Huacachina is your place. There’s plenty of activities such as sandboarding and dune bugging. If you prefer a little less adrenaline, I recommend climbing to the highest sand dune to watch the sunset over the desert oasis. Huacachina is a very small town, and you can easily walk around the oasis in less than 30 minutes. For that reason, I think one night is enough to experience all that Huacachina has to offer. I stayed at Desert Nights Ecocamp and highly recommend the experience of glamping in the desert. Each tent is very large and comes with 2 full beds, fans, WiFi, and power outlets. It also has full bathrooms, showers, a restaurant, bar, and pool.

Day 8: Huacachina to Arequipa

After a peaceful night’s sleep in the desert, you’re well-rested to journey onto Arequipa. The Huacachina to Arequipa journey is the longest leg of the itinerary. I left Huacachina with PeruHop at 1:00 in the afternoon and arrived at 5:30 the next morning in Arequipa. It is an overnight bus journey, but thankfully the bus was very comfortable. However, I would recommend packing earplugs and an eye mask as there may be excessive honking and headlights at night.

Additionally, if you’re traveling with PeruHop, there are extra stops on the way to Arequipa that break apart the journey and make it more bearable. We stopped first at a vineyard where we did Pisco tastings. We had a lot of fun learning Peruvian toasts and trying different types of Peru’s national drink. Then, we stopped to see the mysterious Nazca lines. We got to climb a 3 story tower and see the different drawings from a bird’s eye view. I still can’t decide whether the drawings were because of religion…or aliens

Day 9: Arequipa

Arriving in the early morning in Arequipa, I got to enjoy the Plaza de Armas in peace and quiet. Arequipa is a beautiful city that is full of life and culture. A visit to Arequipa isn’t complete without touring the Santa Catalina Monastery, visiting the Basilica Cathedral de Arequipa, and watching the sunset at one of the rooftop restaurants and bars in the Plaza de Armas. There are also plenty of great restaurants in Arequipa with my favorites being Zig Zag, Chicha, and Zingaro. For breakfast, I really enjoyed Crepisimo Creperie which had an amazing selection of savory and sweet crepes.

Another place in Arequipa to visit is Ruta de Sillar! It is about 30 minutes outside of the historic center and I recommend booking a tour to visit. It is a quick visit but definitely a cool site to see!

Day 10: Colca Canyon

You cannot miss visiting Colca Canyon while you’re in Arequipa! It is a must on your Peru itinerary. It is one of the world’s deepest canyons and a great place for condor sightings. There are several tour and trek options to Colca Canyon from Arequipa. The most popular overnight trips in the canyon are 2 day, 1 night or 3 day, 2 nights.

I chose to do the 2 day, 1 night tour that included transport to the next stop on the itinerary: Puno.

I left Arequipa in the morning and traveled to the town of Chivay where I spent the night. The drive was beautiful, and we got to see pre-Inca terraces, llamas and alpacas, and scenic mountains and hills. The tour takes you to a natural hot spring, so bring a bathing suit if you’d like to visit the springs! If not, you’ll have time to relax and explore the area around the springs.

Day 11: Colca Canyon to Puno

The next morning, I woke up bright and early to continue the Colca Canyon tour! Today’s highlight was Mirador del Cruz where I saw magnificent condors! We did a moderate hike through that area and saw so many condors. Then we traveled through small villages near Colca Canyon for a few hours until we reached Puno.

Take the rest of the day to explore Puno and spend the night here.

You can choose to spend the night in historical Puno or a night on Lake Titicaca! Staying on Lake Titicaca is definitely a bucket list experience and I recommend staying on the lake for a night if you can.

Day 12: Puno and Lake Titicaca

Today, we are visiting the world’s highest navigable body of water, Lake Titicaca. Half of Lake Titicaca is actually in Bolivia and the other in Peru, and the Uros people live on floating reeds on the lake. Visiting Lake Titicaca is the main tourist activity in the city of Puno and why I chose to stop here.

I highly recommend visiting Lake Titicaca and doing a full day tour to visit the Uros Islands and Taquile Island. It is fascinating learning about the history, culture, and lifestyle today of the indigenous people living on the Uros Islands and Taquile Island. They actually make most of their living on tourism now thus visitors are very important to these people!

Day 13: Puno to Cusco

Today, we are journeying to the historic capital of the Incan empire. Cusco was my favorite city in Peru, and one of the highlights of the trip. I highly recommend spending several days in Cusco to enjoy all that the city has to offer! You’ll find Spanish colonial architecture, charming winding streets, delicious Peruvian cuisine, and well-preserved archaeological ruins.

We left Puno around 10:00 in the morning with PeruHop and arrived in Cusco by 5:30 in the afternoon. I spent the evening strolling around historic Cusco and had a delicious dinner at Chicha. I called it an early night, excited to explore more of Cusco in the morning.

Day 14: Cusco

Take today to spend time exploring all that Cusco has to offer! Some of the highlights include Qorikancha, the San Blas district, Plaza de Armas, Cusco Cathedral, the Twelve-angled stone, and the San Pedro market.

A great way to learn about the history of the city is by taking a half-day guided tour of Cusco!

I had some amazing food in Cusco, and want to share some of my favorite restaurants:

• Chicha por Gaston Acurio
• Morena Peruvian Kitchen
• Jack’s Cafe
• Pachapapa
• Limbus Restobar

You can’t go wrong with any of these choices – Chicha, Morena, and Pachapapa all serve Peruvian cuisine, but each menu is unique. Jack’s Cafe is actually an Australian restaurant serving a variety of sandwiches, burgers, soups, breakfast items, and other comfort foods. Limbus Restobar offers a great view of Cusco and people visit for drinks as well.

Day 15: Cusco to Aguas Calientes

It’s time for you to make your way to visit Machu Picchu! When I bought my tickets for Machu Picchu online, I selected the earliest ticket time (6:00 AM), so I planned to spend the night before in Aguas Calientes. Aguas Calientes is the closest town to Machu Picchu and is located at the base of the site. The only way to visit Machu Picchu other than doing the guided treks is by going to the town of Aguas Calientes and taking the bus up to the entrance.

Note: I found my own way to Machu Picchu but you can also do a tour of Machu Picchu from Cusco. It is cheaper to find your own way to Machu Picchu but it is way more convenient to do a full day tour from Cusco.

This is how you can find your own way from Cusco to Machu Picchu:

Transportation from Cusco to Aguas Calientes

There are several ways to get from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. To take the train you’ll have to get from Cusco to the Poray or Ollantaytambo train stations. To do this you could take a private taxi, but that can get quite costly. I chose to take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes because there were more time options. Fortunately, I found a much cheaper way to get to Ollantaytambo than taking a private taxi. I took a colectivo taxi there from historic Cusco and then bought tickets from PeruRail to get to Aguas Calientes. I have written a more in-depth guide to Machu Picchu that details getting there, where to buy tickets, and when to visit.

Aguas Calientes

After I arrived in Aguas Calientes, I went straight to the ticket office to buy my bus ticket for Machu Picchu for the next morning. You can only buy tickets in person at the office, so there’s no need to try and find tickets online. Aguas Calientes is a small town, so all the restaurants and lodging are within walking distance, including the bus stop for Machu Picchu.

Note: Although I chose to spend the night in Aguas Calientes, you can do a day trip to Machu Picchu and back. Machu Picchu is open from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and it took me approximately 2 hours to leisurely walk through the grounds.

Day 16: Machu Picchu

Finally, the day you’ve been waiting for is here! Machu Picchu! The highlight of any travel itinerary for Peru.

Getting to the entrance

As mentioned, I had booked the 6:00 AM entrance ticket to Machu Picchu, so I took the first bus up there which is at 5:30 AM. I was in line by 4:30 AM for the bus, and there was already quite a line by the time I arrived. Although the bus schedule is every 30 minutes, there were multiple buses at 5:30 AM lined up to take people up, so don’t worry if you can’t get on the very first bus.

Visiting the site

The ride from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu takes about 20 minutes. You’ll need your passports and tickets printed out and ready to show when you get to there. Machu Picchu is set up as a one-way circuit with signs guiding you along the way. There are also optional hikes along the way with the most popular ones being the Sun Gate and Inca Bridge. The best photo spots are near the Guardhouse (walk through the entrance and turn left to trek up hill).

That morning, I was among the first 50 people to enter the grounds of Machu Picchu. I found it to be very quiet and peaceful during my visit. But by the time I was leaving about 2 hours later, I could see that the Guardhouse area was swamped with people. I was definitely glad that I visited earlier and left before it got busy.

Back to Cusco

I took the bus back down to Aguas Calientes and the train to the Poray station where I got a taxi back to Cusco. It is pretty easy to find other travelers to get a taxi together to split the fare, since everyone getting off at the Poray station is heading to Cusco.

Day 17: Sacred Valley

Visiting Sacred Valley is a must when you’re in Peru. This fertile area surrounding Cusco is scattered with numerous archaeological sites, the most famous ones being Pisac and Ollantaytambo.

Sacred Valley Ticket Options

There are 4 types of tourist tickets that allow you to visit the most popular tourist attractions in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. The options are:

• 1. Full Tourist Ticket (130 soles/valid for 10 days): includes the 16 main attractions of Cusco and the Sacred Valley (Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay, Museum of Contemporary Art, Regional Historical Museum, Popular Art Museum, Qoricancha, Qosqo Native Art Center, Monument to the Inca Pachacuteq, Pikillaqta, Tipón, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Moray)
• 2. Partial Tourist Ticket – Circuit 1: Cusco Archaeological Sites (70 soles/valid for 1 day): allows entrance to the main archaeological sites in Cusco (Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay)
• 3. Partial Tourist Ticket – Circuit 2: Museums and South Valley (70 soles/valid for 2 days): includes entrances to museums in Cusco and sites in the South Valley (Museum of Contemporary Art, Regional Historical Museum, Popular Art Museum, Qoricancha, Qosqo Native Art Center, Monument to the Inca Pachacuteq, Pikillaqta, Tipón)
• 4. Partial Tourist Ticket – Circuit 3: Sacred Valley (70 soles/valid for 2 days): includes entrance to the major archeological sites of the Sacred Valley (Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Moray)

Where to Purchase Tickets

You can purchase these tourist tickets in person in multiple office locations in Cusco (COSITUC office or tourist information center on Avenida El Sol 103) or at the entrance of the major archeological sites. Based on your own personal preference, you can decide whether you want to buy the full tourist ticket or the partial circuits. If you do decide to purchase the tourist ticket for all 16 sites, then I would add a few more days in Cusco. The ticket is valid for 10 days which should be plenty of time to visit them all.

Circuit #3: Day 1

I elected to do Circuit #3 which covered the Sacred Valley sites I wanted to visit the most: Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, and Moray. Please do not base your Peru itinerary on the circuit I chose – it is completely up to you which sites you want to visit.

Since the tourist ticket was valid for 2 days, I decided to split up the sites and visited Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Chincero on day 1 and Moray on the next. I did day 1 of the Sacred Valley circuit with a tour group and really enjoyed having a tour guide with us to explain the significance of each site. It is magnificent how well-preserved these sites still are!

Day 18: Sacred Valley Part 2

This day is a continuation of the Sacred Valley circuit. As mentioned previously, it is based on your personal preference which ticket you selected, and you don’t have to visit the same sites as me.

Circuit #3: Day 2

On day 2 of my Sacred Valley circuit, I visited Moray for the archeological site and Maras for the famous salt terraces. The entrance for Moray was included in my tourist ticket, but the entrance to the Salineras de Maras was not (10 soles/person). I had researched tours for Maras and Moray, but found most tours to be very expensive and overpriced as Moray and Maras are not far from Cusco.

In the end, I decided to visit Moray and Maras a more local way by taking a colectivo toward Urubamba from Cusco. I told the driver that I was getting off at Maras and then hired a taxi (there were several taxis available at the drop-off point as it is a known drop off point, but do bargain with the taxi drivers) to take me to Salineras de Maras and the Moray archeological site. I got back to Cusco by having the taxi drop me off at the same spot I got out of the colectivo and caught the next van heading back to Cusco.

Note: Taking a colectivo is riskier since there is no set schedule. Many of the colectivos heading back to Cusco were full by the time it stopped in Maras, so I had to wait for a few rounds for a vacant one.

Day 19: Rainbow Mountain

Now that you’ve spent several days in Cusco and the surrounding area, you are fully acclimatized to the altitude and ready to hike Rainbow Mountain! Located only 3.5 hours away from Cusco, Rainbow Mountain is a sight to be seen! I purposely saved hiking Rainbow Mountain as one of the last activities to do on the Peru itinerary as the starting altitude for the hike is over 14,000 ft! I recommend visiting Rainbow Mountain with a tour group and have written a detailed guide dedicated to hiking Rainbow Mountain.

Day 20: Cusco to Lima

Today is a travel day as you fly from Cusco back to Lima. The flights from Cusco to Lima are fairly inexpensive (~ $30 USD) and frequent. The Cusco airport is small and newer so the process was quite smooth, and security did not take long. It was a remarkably quick flight; we had only been in the air an hour and a half and we were already landing in Lima. Depending on the time you land, you could explore the other districts that you haven’t explored yet, such as the historic district.

Day 21: Lima and Depart Peru

It is your last day in Peru! Time to say goodbye to this beautiful country…

I recommend spending this last day eating your favorite Peruvian foods to your heart’s desire and checking out any other sightseeing spots you might have wanted to visit.

I had a late evening flight departing Lima, so I spent the day in the historic district and visited Convento de Santo Domingo, Government Palace of Peru, Plaza de Armas de Lima, Cathedral of Lima, and Church of San Pedro.

Later in the afternoon, I ventured to the Parque de la Exposicion and Circuito Magico del Agua which is a large park with uniquely shaped hedges and water fountains that come to life at night through a light and water show. It is a can-not-miss experience. Get your tickets here!

It was a great way to spend my last day in Peru!
