Puerto Rico is the perfect island getaway! With flights being only hours from anywhere in the US, it is an easy travel destination. Although it is an island, Puerto Rico has a very diverse landscape. There’s much more than beaches in Puerto Rico! Can you believe there are rainforests, waterfalls, mountains, salt flats, and wetlands in Puerto Rico? Follow this ultimate 5-day Puerto Rico itinerary for the perfect trip!

How To Get Around Puerto Rico

The best way to get around Puerto Rico is by driving! I highly suggest renting a vehicle with high clearance and 4WD as the roads in Puerto Rico can sometimes be rough. There are some portions where the road is not in the best condition or the roads are very narrow so I would drive with caution. I definitely do not want to discourage you on driving because it is the best way to see the island. The scenic beauty around the island is worth the drive!

Many people only stay in San Juan when they visit Puerto Rico and they are missing out! Although San Juan is a lot of fun, I definitely recommend venturing out of the capital city and seeing all that the island has to offer. You wouldn’t have experienced the real Puerto Rico if you only stay in one place!

Puerto Rico Itinerary

Day 1: San Juan

Start your Puerto Rico trip by spending time in San Juan! If you’re flying into Puerto Rico, chances are that you’re flying into the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan. The airport is about 30 minutes from Old San Juan and you can either pick up your rental car at the airport when you land or you can use a rideshare to get to Old San Juan. I chose to use Uber to get to Old San Juan because parking could be tricky, and I picked up my rental car later when I was leaving the city.

Old San Juan is a very charming and colorful place, and it is the perfect first stop on your Puerto Rico Itinerary. There is a lot to see, but honestly you only need one day here as most of it is sightseeing. Here are some spots you shouldn’t miss in Old San Juan:

• Fortaleza Street: Street leading up to the Governor’s Mansion that often has colorful displays of either umbrellas or Puerto Rican flag
• Cuartel de Ballaja: Former military barracks that serves as multipurpose building today
• Hotel El Convento: Stay at this luxury hotel in Old San Juan or stop by for food and drinks
• El Morro: Learn about the history of a historical fort and its importance to Puerto Rico
• Calle Imperial: Great spot to take a photo with the Puerto Rican flag
• Cementerio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi: This cemetery is the final resting place of many of PR’s most prominent natives and residents. This cemetery also offers sweeping ocean views!

I highly recommend dining at Barrachina. It is a very popular restaurant serving Puerto Rican specialties and it claims to have invented the pina colada! The food and pina colada (had to order one) were absolutely delicious.

Day 2 – 3: Aguadilla

Next on the Puerto Rico itinerary is Aguadilla! Leave Old San Juan early in the morning and head to Aguadilla. Pick up your rental car (if you haven’t already) and head west to the beaches of Aguadilla. It is a 2 hour drive from San Juan to Aguadilla and you’ll be on a major interstate so the ride should be smooth.

On your way to Aguadilla, visit Frutos del Guacabo which is a family-owned and operated farm located in Manatí. You can visit and tour the farm to learn about sustainable farming and what it means to be farm-to-table. They also serve a delicious organic meal!

While you’re in the Manatí, make sure to stop at Mar Chiquita Beach and Los Tubos Beach which are two of the best beaches in Puerto Rico!

There is also an amazing viewpoint at Mirador de Guajataca.

Aguadilla is known for its beautiful beaches! Here are some spots in Aguadilla that you should definitely check out:

• Survival Beach: Take a fun hike to a secret beach
• Crash Boat Beach: You can find colorful rowboats at this beach
• Las Ruinas Faro de La Ponderosa: Check out these ruins in Aguadilla!
• Avion Abandonado: Climb inside an abandoned plane

Don’t miss watching the sunset from the beaches of Aguadilla! My favorite sunset spot is Playa Pena Blanca Beach.

Day 4 – 5: San Sebastian, Cabo Rojo, and La Parguera

On Day 4, drive to San Sebastian to see some beautiful waterfalls! It is about a 30 minute drive from Aguadilla and you can find two waterfalls here. Gozalandia Falls is one of the most beautiful places in Puerto Rico! You can actually find two waterfalls here. There is an official parking lot so be sure to bring cash ($10) for parking. The hikes to the falls are short and easy. Bring your bathing suit to swim here!

After your morning adventure at Gozalandia Falls, head south to Rojo Cabo. It is about an hour and a half from the waterfalls are there are two main attractions in this area.

First up is Salinas de Cabo Rojo! Did you know there are salt flats in Puerto Rico? They even turn pink on a sunny day. To visit these salt flats, park your car at Centro Interpretativo Las Salinas and walk along the road until you see an opening to the fence to the salt flats. It is free to visit but please do be respectful and leave no trace! Do not litter as throwing trash into the salt flats ruins the salt.

Then, drive just a little further south to Faro Los Morrillos. The views from this lighthouse are stunning! There are trails that takes you along the ocean cliffs and there are several unique rock formations you can spot from here. If you have extra time and want to go for a swim, head to Playa Sucia nearby for an isolated and picturesque beach with views of the lighthouse! At the end of the day, drive 45 minutes from Cabo Rojo to the town of La Parguera.

The town of La Parguera is small and quaint but it is the gateway to incredible nature! Did you know that it is a bioluminescent bay? The waters near La Parguera glow due to the microorganisms in the water, and many tour companies offer kayak tours or boat excursions to explore the bay’s waters! I highly suggest booking a tour since you can only see the waters glow at night.

Day 6: La Parguera, Yauco, and Ponce

Start your day off by exploring the town of La Parguera! There are several great restaurants and boutiques in town that you should check out. I also recommend taking a trip to Cayo Caracoles which is a mangrove forest near La Parguera. You can get a boat at Gina’s Johnny’s Boats in town to take you there. You can get a tour and guide as well!

Depart La Parguera for the city of Yauco and stop by Finca El Girasol on the way. Finca El Girasol is a beautiful field of sunflowers and makes a fun stop. It is only Take a quick detour here and snap some photos with the sunflowers.

Then, continue to the city of Yauco! Yauco is a super colorful city and it is a fun place to simply walk around. Yauco is also another quick stop and then you’ll leave for the city of Ponce.

Ponce is one of Puerto Rico’s largest cities and there’s plenty to do here! I suggest taking a walking tour through town and admiring the beautiful architecture around town. Some of the attractions you shouldn’t miss include:

• Museo de Arte de Ponce: One of the best art museums in Puerto Rico with an extensive collection of over 4,500 pieces, consisting of paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, photographs/video, and more!
• Plaza Las Delicias: The main plaza in Ponce with ornate buildings and shady trees – be sure to visit Parque de Bombas, Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the many cafes and restaurants around the square!
• Castillo Serrallés: A grand estate with sweeping views of Ponce that once belonged to owners of the Don Q rum distillery! Today, you can take a tour to see the ornate architecture, beautiful gardens, and learn about how the family lived and grew their business.
• La Guancha: Popular and picturesque seaside boardwalk lined with restaurants and kiosks selling food and beverages.
• Hacienda Buena Vista: Visit this coffee plantation to learn about how coffee was grown and processed in the 19th century

Day 7: El Yunque National Forest

Depart Ponce early in the morning for El Yunque National Forest! It is about a 2.5 hours drive, but there is a super cool spot you should stop by on the way to the rainforest. The stop is called La Curva del Arbol and it is a scenic overlook with a swing! This is a very popular photo spot in Puerto Rico and the view is absolutely worth the detour.

It is 50 minutes from Ponce to the swing and then 1.5 hours from the swing to the entrance of El Yunque National Forest.

El Yunque National Forest is actually one of the smallest rainforests in the world, but one of the most biologically diverse. Come experience the beauty of the national rainforest and do go chasing waterfalls!

Here are some of the most beautiful spots to visit in El Yunque National Forest:

• Puente Roto

• Las Tinajas Falls
• Charco El Hippie WaterfallTorre Britton
• Bano Grande
• El Yunque Peak Tower
• Juan Diego Falls

Depending on when your flight is, you can either head to the airport after visiting El Yunque National Forest or head back to San Juan and spend the night there if your flight is the next day!

This fun Atlanta Instagram spot is known as “Disco Kroger” as it’s located in the same shopping center as the grocery store. You’ll actually find the mural on the right side of Kroger next to Binders Art Supplies! This colorful spot is certainly one of the most Instagrammable places in Atlanta!

2. Atlanta Beltline

Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail, Atlanta, GA 30312

Walking the Beltline is one of my favorite things to do in Atlanta! The 22-mile paved trail connects several food halls, such as Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market, breweries, intramural fields, and more. There are several murals along the Atlanta Beltline, but the most Instagrammable spot is actually at one of the starting points. The colorful mural below is located at the start of the Eastside Trail, directly across the street from Park Tavern.

3. Dancing Goats at Ponce City Market

Grab a cup of coffee at the Dancing Goats Coffee Bar near Ponce City Market and strike a pose at the fun mural outside!

There is a mural space right outside Ponce City Market facing the Atlanta Beltline that is ever-changing! Follow the signs for the Beltline when you’re inside Ponce City Market and you’ll be able to find this mural space.

Ponce City Market is a favorite gathering place for locals and visitors alike, and there is a good reason why! This bustling market is filled with restaurants, retail shops, boutiques, offices, and more. You can even rent a bike right outside to bike the Atlanta Beltline.

Visit the Roof at Ponce City Market year-round for mini golf, arcade games, drinks, and fine dining! Plus, you’ll get a panoramic view of Atlanta’s skyline. I love the holiday transformation of the Roof at Ponce City Market around Christmas time! The Roof turns into a winter wonderland with festive decor complete with an ice skating rink, holiday bars, and igloos available for you to reserve.

7. SkyView Atlanta

168 Luckie St NW, Atlanta, GA 30303

Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, SkyView Atlanta makes an excellent attraction for a romantic date…and for a photo opportunity! This Ferris wheel features 42 private gondolas that provides panoramic views of downtown Atlanta and the surrounding area.

8. Pemberton Place

126 Ivan Allen Jr Blvd NW, Atlanta, GA 30308

Pemberton Place, named after the inventor of Coca Cola, is home to popular Atlanta attractions such as the World of Coke, Georgia Aquarium, and the Center for Civil and Human Rights. It is just north of Centennial Olympic Park and a great place to take photos of with Atlanta buildings in the background.

9. Rainbow Crosswalk

1000 Piedmont Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30309

At the intersection 10th & Piedmont, you’ll find four crosswalks painted in rainbow stripes as a symbol of pride and a city emblem for LGBTQ+ pride. This is a busy intersection, so I recommend getting here early if you want to take a photo in the crosswalk.

10. Piedmont Park

1320 Monroe Dr NE, Atlanta, GA 30306

Piedmont Park is a large 185 acre urban park located northeast of downtown Atlanta. There are so many things to do in park as well as photo opportunities. My favorite Instagrammable spots within the park include Midtown Reflection, the Meadow at Piedmont, and the Dockside.

11. Atlanta Botanical Garden

1345 Piedmont Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30309

The Atlanta Botanical Garden, occupying the same grounds as Piedmont Park, features beautiful grounds, fountains, and a conservatory. There are special events and themed exhibitions throughout the year depending on the season. Check their website for the events calendar to plan your visit.

12. Millennium Gate Museum

395 17th St NW, Atlanta, GA 30363

You might find yourself transported from Atlanta to Rome when you step under the Millennium Gate Museum! This fantastic arch is located near Atlantic Station so you can get some shopping done while you’re in this area.

13. Oakland Cemetery

248 Oakland Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30312

I believe the Oakland Cemetery to be one of the most beautiful places in Atlanta. This historic cemetery is a landmark and the final resting place of many of the city’s most noted citizens.

14. Jackson Street Bridge

This iconic bridge offers a fantastic view of Atlanta’s skyline! I recommend coming here for sunrise for the best photo opportunity. This is certainly one of the most popular Instagrammable places in Atlanta!

15. Swan House

130 West Paces Ferry Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30305

Can you believe this beautiful estate is located in the heart of Atlanta? Swan House was built in 1928 for Edward and Emily Inman, an affluent Atlanta family, and a great example of the Second Renaissance Revival style that was popular in the late 1920s. The grounds are also absolutely stunning with fountains, sculptures, and lush greenery. The name of the house is drawn from the swan motifs that are placed throughout the interior.

Today, the Swan House is a part of the Atlanta History Center, and your admission to the museum grants access to the grounds and the interior of the Swan House. You also might recognize this popular Atlanta photo spot from the Hunger Games movies! President Snow’s house anyone?

16. Butterfly Mural at Chattahoochee Food Works

If you haven’t been to Chattahoochee Food Works, then you need to check it out! Chattahoochee Food Works is one of Atlanta’s newest food halls as well as home to the newest Atlanta Instagram spot. It is located in the Upper Westside of the city and features over 31 vendors serving all types of international cuisines.

17. The Varsity

61 North Avenue NW, Atlanta, GA 30308

The Varsity is a staple serving the Atlanta community since 1928! Its original location is right in the heart of Atlanta. This establishment takes up 2 entire city blocks and can seat over 800 diners! You have to experience dining here at least once. Be sure to order their famous Frozen Orange!

18. High Museum of Art

1280 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30309

The High Museum of Art is an architectural wonder and home to more than 17,000 pieces of American, European, African, decorative and folk art, plus photography and contemporary works. The exhibits are constantly changing so be sure to check out what is new and coming to the museum periodically!

19. Big Softie

66 Georgia Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30312

This beautiful floral mural can be found on the side of Big Softie, a popular soft-serve shop in Atlanta! Stop by for a delicious soft serve and a fun photoshoot. Big Softie’s flavors change seasonally so be sure to check for new and limited flavors!

20. Vaughter’s Farm

Vaughters’ Farm is an iconic remnant of DeKalb County’s rural past and a part of Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. This barn on Vaughters’ Farm makes for a beautiful photo spot!

21. Stars Mill Waterfall

Venture 40 minutes south of Atlanta and find this beautiful and serene spot! I think it is well worth the drive.

22. Bell Mountain

20 Shake Rag Rd, Hiawassee, GA 30546

Located in North Georgia in the town of Hiawassee, Bell Mountain is one of the most beautiful places in the state of Georgia. It is much further out as it is almost borders Tennessee, but I believe it is a must visit picturesque spot. You’ll find this observation deck and colorful graffiti painted rocks.

23. Fort Mountain State Park

181 Fort Mountain State Park Rd, Chatsworth, GA 30705

Georgia has plenty of beautiful state parks, one being Fort Mountain State Park in Chatsworth. It is a picturesque place to visit year-round, but especially in the fall when the leaves turn different shades of reds, oranges, and yellows.

24. Downtown Helen

Helen, Georgia is an adorable alpine town in north Georgia! The architecture of Helen resembles Bavarian Germany and you can find authentic German food in town as well. You have to stop at Hofer’s Bakery and Cafe to pick up pastries and sweets and head to Bodensee for an authentic German meal

Although downtown Helen is small, there is a lot to do in the area! It’s perfect for a weekend trip. 

Helen is known for its tubing and outdoor adventures! There are also great hikes in the area including High Shoals Falls, Dukes Creek Falls, and Raven Cliffs Trailhead. Driving the scenic Richard B. Russell Scenic Hwy is also a bucket list item!

25. Burt’s Pumpkin Farm

5 Burts Pumpkin Farm Rd, Dawsonville, GA 30534

One of my favorite activities in the fall is going to the pumpkin patch! Burt’s Pumpkin Farm is one of my favorite places to visit in the fall, and there is no admission charge. Stop by to snap some photos, pick out your favorite pumpkins, and shop local and fresh goods such as apple pie, roasted pumpkin seeds, cider, and more!

26. Fausett Farms Sunflowers

11336 GA-136, Dawsonville, GA 30534

There are several sunflower farms in Georgia, but my favorite is Fausett Farms! They have the largest patch of sunflowers with 30 acres of over 900,000 sunflowers. Plus, they are just down the road from Burt’s Pumpkin Patch. These beautiful sunflowers certainly makes this list of the most Instagrammable places in Atlanta. The sunflowers are typically in bloom in September and lasts through the end of October. Note: Admission is $5 per vehicle.

27. B.J. Reece Orchards

9131 GA-52, Ellijay, GA 30536

You have to go apple picking in north Georgia in the fall! There are several farms near Ellijay where you can pick fresh apples yourself, one being B.J. Reece Orchards. Plus, the apple cider donuts here are sooo good!

28. Atlantic Station

261 19th St NW #1250, Atlanta, GA 30363

I love how festive Atlantic Station is around the holidays! Their holiday decor is super cute and includes these two large Christmas trees. Plus, they have one of the largest ice skating rinks in the South!

9. Treat Yourself at Native Salt Cave & Wellness

Take your trip to Wilmington to another level with a visit to Native Salt Cave & Wellness! Here you can immerse yourself in a Himalayan salt cave and choose from a variety of self-care treatments. I did a salt therapy session where I sat in the main salt cave and was able to sit back and relax while listening to the sound of soft ocean waves.

10. Head to the Beaches

Wilmington is known for its beautiful surrounding beaches! There truly is something for everyone at the beaches whether you want to relax or you want to hit the water. Head to Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, or Kure Beach to soak up the sun, swim in the ocean, and enjoy water activities like surfing, paddle boarding, fishing, and more. Each beach has its own unique atmosphere and attractions!

Wrightsville Beach is the closest beach to Wilmington and that is where I spent my time! There’s nothing like beautiful sandy beaches, crystal blue waters, and clear skies!

Here are things you have to do in Wrightsville Beach:

• Relax on the Beach: Spend a day soaking up the sun, building sandcastles, or taking a leisurely stroll along the shore!
• Watersports: Wrightsville Beach offers excellent conditions for surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and other watersports. Rent a surfboard or book a lesson to catch some waves, or try paddleboarding along the calm waters of the Intracoastal Waterway!
• Visit Johnnie Mercer’s Fishing Pier: Take a walk on Johnnie Mercer’s Fishing Pier, a popular landmark at Wrightsville Beach. Enjoy the views of the ocean and watch as fishermen try their luck. The pier is also a great spot for a leisurely stroll or to snap some memorable photos!
• Explore the Loop: The John Nesbitt Loop, more commonly known as “The Loop” encircles the island and is great for walking and running! Enjoy the gorgeous environment and you get your blood pumping on this 2.5-mile trail with scenic views.
• Take a boat to Masonboro Island Reserve: Just a short boat ride away from Wrightsville Beach, Masonboro Island is a hidden gem for nature lovers. This undeveloped barrier island offers miles of pristine shoreline, salt marshes, and maritime forests. Explore the island’s trails, go birdwatching, or enjoy a secluded beach day away from the crowds.

Chattahoochee Coffee Company is one of my favorite places in Atlanta! This coffee shop has the best view in Atlanta – you’re right on the Chattahoochee River! There’s plenty of green space for you to relax on the grass, walk along the river, or even go on a hike.

The only downside is that it is actually located within an apartment complex (Walton on Chattahoochee) and non-residents can only visit on weekdays. It is a gated community so when you get to the gate, you have to ring the bell for Chattahoochee Coffee Company to get in.

Puerto Rico is an insanely beautiful place! With the flight being only a few short hours from anywhere in the US, it is the perfect place for a getaway. Even though Puerto Rico is an island, it is more than just sandy white beaches. When I visited, I was honestly surprised at the diversity of the landscape in Puerto Rico! There are so many beautiful spots around the island and the best way to see it all is by renting a car and driving around. Photo Spots in San Juan

San Juan is the most visited city in Puerto Rico and has several great photo spots! If you fly into San Juan, then you also won’t need a car to visit these spots as these are all within walking distance from each other.

1. Fortaleza Street

I had to start off my list of the best places to take pictures in Puerto Rico with Calle Fortaleza! It is the most photographed place in Old San Juan and you can probably guess why! This street leading up to Puerto Rico’s Governor Mansion (La Fortaleza) is blocked off so you can snap a photo without any cars on the street. The display changes from time to time and sometimes there are colorful umbrellas while the Puerto Rican flag was flying when I visited.

I recommend visiting here early in the morning as this is a very popular photo spot!

2. Castillo San Felipe del Morro El Morro Fort

The El Morro Fort is a great place to visit not just for photography, but because it is a place of historical significance for Puerto Rico! Come and learn about the history of the outpost and its importance to Spain and the US.

3. Calle Imperial

You’ll find the vibrant and colorful mural of the Puerto Rican flag on Calle Imperial! I can’t think of a better place to take a photo that screams “I’m in Puerto Rico!”

5. Calle Norzagaray

Sometimes the best photo spots are the ones we don’t expect! I was walking down Calle Norzagaray when I was inspired to take several pictures of the colorful streets and doors.

6. Hotel El Convento

Hotel El Convento is a luxury hotel in Old San Juan, but it is also one of the best places to take pictures in Puerto Rico! Even if you’re not a guest at this hotel, you can stop by for food and drinks. I thought the street right next to the hotel was even more photo-worthy though! Both the left and right photos above were captured in the street right next to the hotel.

7. Cuartel de Ballaja

Built-in 1854, Cuartel de Ballaja used to be a military barrack but serves many different functions today. Now, it houses a dance school, a music school, the Museo de las Américas, the Puerto Rico Academy of the Spanish Language, and the State Office of Historic Conservation! I love the beautiful colors and symmetry of the building itself.

8. Cementerio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi

I don’t typically visit cemeteries when I travel, but I had to pay this one a visit. Cementerio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi is significant to Puerto Rico is the final resting place of many of PR’s most prominent natives and residents. This cemetery also offers sweeping ocean views!

9. Barrachina

Barrachina is a very popular restaurant serving Puerto Rican specialties. The restaurant claims to have invented the pina colada! I highly recommend dining here as the food was delicious and I got the pina colada, of course. The atmosphere is very fun and you’ll find a colorful courtyard with a beautiful fountain on the inside.

Photo Spots Outside of San Juan

To visit these photography spots, you’ll need to rent a car to travel around Puerto Rico. I highly suggest one with high clearance and 4WD as the roads can be rough in some areas.

10. Cero Mime

Cerro Mime is located in the middle of Puerto Rico, and this short, steep hike leads to sweeping mountain views. The climb to the top of Cerro Mime doesn’t take long but it is a quick ascent in elevation.

I have to be honest that the drive here was rough and there was not an actual designated parking spot to start this hike when I visited. I recommend going with someone that knows the area/trail because finding the trailhead was very difficult.

However, based on recent comments for this trail on AllTrails, it seems like now there is a local by the name of Ramon that allows you to park your car at his property (see map below) and points you to the trail but do check before you visit if anything changes.

11. Gozalandia Falls

Gozalandia Falls is one of the most beautiful places in Puerto Rico! You can actually find two waterfalls at Cascada Gozalandia. There is an official parking lot so be sure to bring cash ($10) for parking. However, there is no other admission fee. There is also a restaurant and bar on the property.

The walk to the waterfalls is easy. To access the lower falls, you’ll walk down a series of stairs to a cascading waterfall (pictured on right). To access the upper falls, continue the trail and it is a short walk (pictured on left). You can swim at both waterfalls and there’s even a rope swing at the upper one!

12. Survival Beach

Aguadilla is known for its beautiful beaches and Survival Beach is one of them! If you’re looking for a fun hike to a secluded beach then this beach is for you! You’ll pass by epic rock formations along the 20-minute hike to this beach. This beach is still much of a secret for visitors so you probably won’t pass by anyone on this trail.

Start at the Surfer’s Beach parking lot and look for signs for the trail to Survival Beach (the sign should be obvious). Cross a bridge at the parking lot and head into the woods as part of the trail. The trail itself winds through the woods and over roots and rocks so wear closed-toe shoes. It takes you through the trees and onto Tabletop Beach. Then, depending on the water levels, you can either walk on the beach to Survival Beach or go back through the trees. I highly recommend bringing a backpack with water, sunscreen, and snacks as you could be out in the hot sun for a while!

13. Crash Boat Beach

Crash Boat Beach, which is another Aguadilla beach, is the perfect place to catch the sunset! There are colorful rowboats lined up on the shoreline hence the name. There is also a designated parking lot here! If you can’t tell already, having designated parking spaces for attractions is a luxury. During my road trip, we had lots of issues finding marked parking spaces for places we wanted to visit.

14. Las Ruinas Faro de La Ponderosa

You have to check out these ruins while you’re in Aguadilla! These ruins are near Punta Borinquen Beach and the views from these ruins are epic! You’ll get sweeping ocean views with palm trees swaying in the wind. It is a great place to relax and picnic!

Aguadilla is full of so many gems from beautiful beaches and ruins to…an abandoned plane! You should make a stop to check out this abandoned plane and snap photos of this colorful spot. The story behind the plane is that a pilot was moving the plane at the Aguadilla airport in 1992 when an issue arose and he lost control of the plane and crashed it into another parked plane.

Today, it sits in a field on Route 107 next to a Puma gas station. It is located on private property and the owner asks for a small donation to visit as he takes care of the lot. There are stairs leading into the plane so you can climb into the inside as well!

16. Salinas de Cabo Rojo

Did you know there are salt flats in Puerto Rico?! Not only that but these salt flats turn pink on a sunny day! To visit these salt flats, park your car at Centro Interpretativo Las Salinas and walk along the road until you see an opening to the fence to the salt flats. It is free to visit but please do be respectful and leave no trace! Do not litter as throwing trash into the salt flats ruins the salt.

17. Faro Los Morrillos

If you drive past the pink salt flats, you’ll find yourself at a beautiful park called “Cabo Rojo”. The views here are absolutely gorgeous! Head first to Faro Los Morrillos which is an iconic lighthouse atop cliffs! There is a nice trail here that takes you alongside the cliffs. Be sure to stop at Puente de Piedra, a unique rock formation that makes a bridge, to take some photos!

18. Cayo Caracoles

Cayo Caracoles is a mangrove forest off the shore from La Parguera and it is great for snorkeling, kayaking, boating, and swimming! I swam in the clearest waters there and I highly recommend visiting. You can get a boat at Gina’s Johnny’s Boats in La Parguera to take you there. You can get a tour and guide as well!

Did you know there is a sunflower field in Puerto Rico? I certainly didn’t! I actually only found this spot when I was looking on Google Maps and the app suggested it to me. It is a fun stop on your Puerto Rico road trip and you can even buy sunflowers to take with you!

If you visit Puerto Rico, you have to visit El Yunque National Forest! It is actually one of the smallest rainforests in the world, but one of the most biologically diverse. Come experience the beauty of the national rainforest and do go chasing waterfalls!

As a Georgia local, I frequently visit Savannah as it is one of my favorite vacation spots. There’s so much to do in Savannah and… so many great places to eat! Savannah is a foodie’s heaven. From Southern comfort food to world cuisine, you’ll find it all in Savannah, Georgia. Plus, the local open container law gives a new definition to eating and drinking around this charming city. I’ve had some of my most memorable meals in Savannah, and I cannot wait to revisit these amazing restaurants. Check out the 10 best places to eat in Savannah, Georgia right now!

1. Hitch

Hitch is the sister restaurant to the popular Treylor Park restaurant in the heart of downtown Savannah. It is a local spot as you’ll be able to order much of the same menu as the original, but with half the crowd. Hitch is a modern, fun spot that is great for lunch or brunch, but definitely not for those who are on a strict diet. The menu is eccentric, taking “Southern food with a twist” up a notch. It is full of fried comfort foods – but there is absolutely nothing wrong with that It is also a great spot for drinks as it has a great selection of signature cocktails, craft beers, and wine.

I ordered the Savannah Hot Chicken and Waffles and it was the perfect combination of sweet, spicy, and salty. You also have to try the Treylor Park Nachos Grande! Waffle fries smothered in pickles, fried chicken, bacon, cheese, ranch, and balsamic – sounds absolutely irresistible right? The portion sizes are great and the flavors are bold!

2. Green Truck Neighborhood Pub

Green Truck Neighborhood Pub has become a favorite amongst visitors and locals alike. It was founded on the premise that Savannahians deserves a casual place to eat and drink well. Its menu consists of burgers and sandwiches made from ingredients that are locally sourced and grown. Even its condiments, including ketchup, are house-made! This local favorite is consistently regarded as one of the best places to eat in Savannah, Georgia throughout the years.

You can’t go wrong ordering anything from the menu. This popular spot is well known for its outstanding burgers made with grass-fed, all-natural beef, but it is also vegetarian-friendly. You can substitute any of the burgers with a homemade veggie patty. Plus, there are other menu items such as veggie Reuben, grilled cheese sandwich, and a variety of salads. I actually don’t eat beef, and ordered the Trailer Park (pimento cheese, tomato, onion, lettuce, and house-made pickles) and substituted the beef for chicken. I would be remiss if I did not mention the fries – crispy, perfectly salted, and hand-cut. Dunk that into homemade ketchup and you couldn’t ask for anything more. This place is worth all the hype!

3. Flying Monk Noodle Bar

If you’re looking for delicious Asian cuisine in Savannah, Flying Monk Noodle Bar is your place! Located in downtown Savannah, this is a modern spot for Asian dishes. The restaurant focuses on providing fresh-cut, handmade noodles from various Asian countries including Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Korea, Laos, and others. Their menu includes noodle dishes such as pho, ramen, and drunken noodles, and rice dishes such as fried rice as well.

The drunken noodles I had were unforgettable and perfectly comparable to the ones I had in Thailand! I love that the menu features so many different plates from a number of Asian countries. It is a one-stop shop for Asian cuisine!

4. Soho South Cafe

Named after the famed New York City neighborhood, Soho South Cafe is a chic and rustic-style bistro and event space in the heart of Savannah. This spacious spot is a part restaurant and part art gallery. This is a great spot for both lunch and weekend brunch.

The lunch menu features soups, salads, and a large selection of sandwiches. There are plenty of traditional sandwich choices, such as the classic turkey and chicken salad, plus several signature entrees, including seafood pot pie and fried chicken. Weekend brunch at Soho South Cafe is a must! The brunch menu boasts a mouthwatering selection of french toast, benedicts, breakfast burritos, and more! Be sure to take the time to browse through the art gallery after your meal.

I highly recommend the classic Soho combo which gives you the best of both worlds by combining a classic grilled cheese (gruyere, cheddar, smoked gouda, and pimento aioli) served with a cup of Soho’s famous tomato basil bisque.

5. The Olde Pink House

Located in the historic district of Savannah, the Olde Pink House is highly regarded for its memorable dining experience in an 18th-century mansion. The menu features freshly caught seafood, aged steaks, and traditional Southern fare. The restaurant is absolutely stunning – the exterior has a beautiful pink facade and the interior is beautifully decorated. The restaurant’s portrait-lined walls, fireplaces, and shimmering chandeliers add to the overall atmosphere.

The Olde Pink House is critically acclaimed as one of the best places to eat in Savannah, Georgia. It is a must-visit for first-time visitors! Plus, the Olde Pink House is a great date spot with its romantic setting. I suggest making a reservation well in advance as this is one of Savannah’s most popular restaurants.

6. Rancho Alegre Cuban Restaurant

Established in 1999, Rancho Alegre has served as the locals’ favorite place to enjoy live music and delicious Latin food. This family-owned restaurant has served Savannahnians and visitors alike with foods prepared with authentic and fresh ingredients. You’ll find a wide variety of Cuban dishes from starters like fried plantains, yuca, and empanadas and side dishes like homemade Sopa de Pollo (chicken soup). Rancho Alegre also serves traditional beverages like icy Batidos with tropical fruits. Plus there are so many specialty dishes! Don’t forget to check out their drink selections as well including mojitos, margaritas, and sangria.

7. Chive Sea Bar and Lounge

Chive Sea Bar and Lounge offers a unique dining experience in a 1920s art deco setting. This restaurant serves outstanding seafood dishes with an Asian and Southern fusion. Their menu features a raw bar with cold plates and specialty seafood dishes such as lobster and edamame risotto, Chilean sea bass, scallops, and more! The cocktail menu features roaring 20s-influenced drinks, along with a nice selection of wine and beer.

I loved the vibes at this restaurant and the food was delicious! I highly recommend the She Crab Soup and the Flounder & Crab plate (filet flounder and crab stuffing served over sautéed spinach with red curry sauce).

8. Garibaldi’s Savannah

Garibaldi’s Savannah is an upscale and elegant Italian restaurant that is in a former firehouse! If you’re looking for a delicious Italian meal, then look no further as Garibaldi’s menu dishes up delicious Italian staples such as lasagna, spaghetti, chicken parmigiana, and linguine primavera. Plus, it offers an ample selection of seafood including stuffed salmon, seared flounder, and more!

It is a great place for a romantic evening or a festive celebration – I actually celebrated my friend’s birthday here! I had to include this special place on my list of best places to eat in Savannah, Georgia as I dined here on my first visit.

Cotton & Rye serves contemporary American fare…in a former bank! The door to the safe still remains in the dining room. Almost everything is made from scratch, including its freshly baked bread! Their menu features items such as smothered pork chops, eggplant cannelloni, spicy pork ragu, and prime NY strip. Be sure to order a cocktail from their drink menu!

Take a trip down under by dining at the Collins Quarter! Named after the famed Collins Street in Melbourne, the Collins Quarter brings a piece of Australia to Savannah, Georgia. It delivers a unique dining experience by pairing specialty drinks including coffee, craft beer, and wine with innovative cuisine. This is a great place for both brunch and dinner, and I cannot decide which menu I like better!

The brunch menu features items such as bananas foster french toast, rib hash, eggs benedict, and shakshouka while the dinner menu serves classics like roasted chicken, steak and frites, braised ribs, and rainbow trout. Plus, they have a wide variety of signature cocktails.

Leopold’s Ice Cream

If you’re in Savannah, you have to go to Leopold’s for ice cream! It doesn’t even matter if you’re lactose intolerant or don’t like ice cream. Grabbing ice cream here is a Savannah tradition. Leopold’s was founded in 1919 by two brothers George and Peter Leopold and is the go-to place for ice cream in Savannah for over 100 years. The first thing you might notice is the line that stretches from the front door and halfway down the block. Don’t let that sway you from leaving though! Thankfully the line moves quickly, and there is usually staff passing out water on those hot summer days.

The flavors include the traditional ones such as chocolate, vanilla, mint chocolate chip, and strawberry, but also unique ones such as rum bisque, tutti frutti, and the signature Savannah Socialite. My personal favorite is the lemon custard which tastes like lemon pound cake in ice cream. I’ve visited Savannah several times over the past few years, and I visit Leopold’s every time. Named one of the top 10 ice cream parlors in the World, there is something for everyone at Leopold’s.

The Coffee Fox

Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, I had the best of both worlds! I got to experience city life but also had access to incredible nature and scenery within a short drive. There are several bucket list destinations just hours away from the city. Over the years, I’ve taken numerous weekend trips from Atlanta and didn’t ever have to get on a flight! A few hours drive and I am in a whole new city. Check out my list of the best weekend getaways from Atlanta!

Weekend Getaways from Atlanta

1. Helen, Georgia (1.5 hour)

Helen is a Bavarian-styled village just an hour and a half north of Atlanta near the Blue Ridge Mountains. You’re immediately transported to Germany as you step into this charming town!

While you’re in town, make sure to get sweets at the many German bakeries around town and eat at authentic German restaurants such as Bodensee and Hofbrauhaus. Helen is simply a great place to walk around! Shop at the many unique boutiques in town, go mini-golfing, and eat to your heart’s desires.

The actual town itself is small, but there’s plenty to do around Helen as well. During the warmer months, Helen is a great place to go tubing! If you’re up for more adventurous activities, go zip-lining to experience the North Georgia mountains from a different perspective. Or go on a drive on the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway which is one of the most scenic drives in Georgia. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities off the 40-mile road as you wind through curvy mountain roads including Dukes Creek Falls, Raven Cliffs, and Hogpen Gap.

Helen is a great weekend getaway from Atlanta that is perfect for couples, friends, and families alike!

2. Chattanooga, Tennessee (2 hours)

Just two hours away from Atlanta, Chattanooga is a great city to explore for a weekend. While you’re in downtown Chattanooga, walk along the 13-mile paved riverwalk that gives you access to restaurants, parks, and other attractions. Or if you prefer to see the city from a different view, take a riverboat cruise down the Tenessee River!

Some of the can’t miss attractions in Chattanooga include:

• Lookout Mountain
• Ruby Falls
• Rock City Gardens
• Tennessee Aquarium
• Hunter Museum of American Art

There’s also a great food scene in Chattanooga. Start your day at Rembrandt’s Coffee House and grab a quick bite or beverage before starting your riverwalk. Or if you want a full meal, grab some Italian at Tony’s Pasta Shop and Trattoria or head to Scottie’s On The River to enjoy a riverview with your meal. Feeling something sweet? Head to Clumpies Ice Cream Co.

If you enjoy beer, there’s a great brewery scene in Chattanooga as well. Some of the most popular breweries in Chattanooga include Chattanooga Brewing Company, Oddstory Brewing Company, Hutton & Smith Brewing Company, Naked River Brewing, Heaven and Ale Brewing Company, and Five Wits Brewing Company.

Feeling outdoorsy? There are some great hikes near Chattanooga that lead to swimming holes and beautiful waterfalls! Check out these beautiful hikes: Desoto Falls, Lula Lake, Foster Falls, and North Chick Blue Hole.

There’s truly something for everyone in Chattanooga!

3. Greenville, South Carolina (2.5 hour)

Greenville is such a fun weekend trip from Atlanta! It is less than a 2.5-hour drive and there are lots to do in this city. Downtown Greenville is a vibrant scene! It is a great destination for eating, shopping, and fun entertainment. It is a very pedestrian-friendly city with wide sidewalks, outdoor plazas, and al fresco dining options. The atmosphere in Greenville reminds me much of Europe!

There is plenty of nature to be found in the city as well with its tree-lined Main Street and its famed Falls Park on the Reedy in the center of town. Can you believe there’s a waterfall in the middle of downtown! Plus, there’s an award-winning bridge that connects the downtown area of Greenville. Watching the sunset from Liberty Bridge was one of my favorite things I did in the city. I love the general, relaxed atmosphere around the city. You’ll see people out enjoying life, strolling along the river, taking their pups on a walk, picnicking in green spaces, and engaging in good conversation. There’s great reason Greenville has been named one of the best cities to live in the US!

4. Asheville, North Carolina (3.5 hour)

Asheville has been consistently ranked as one of the best cities to visit in the US and rightfully so! This city has everything one could ask for: great food scene, numerous breweries, scenic nature, and a lively downtown. I felt like I got the perfect mix of nature and city during my weekend getaway to Asheville.

A getaway to Asheville from Atlanta also makes a great road trip as I made plenty of stops along the way. Some of the scenic spots I stopped at include Devils Courthouse, Graveyard Fields, and Looking Glass Falls. There are also plenty of other hiking opportunities around Asheville including Bridal Veil Falls Trail, Black Balsam Knob Hike, Craggy Gardens Pinnacle Trail, Max Patch Hike, Mount Pisgah Trail, Mount Mitchell.

If you’re a food lover, you’re going to love Asheville! There are so many great places to eat. Some of the local favorites include Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack, Biscuit Head, White Duck Taco Shop, Chai Pani, Red Ginger Dimsum & Tapas, and Chestnut.

And…if you’re a beer lover, you’re definitely going to love Asheville There are over 30 breweries in Asheville! It’s a great place to try some new beers or revisit old favorites. The most popular breweries include Wicked Weed Brewing, Highland Brewing, Burial Beer Company, Hi-Wire Brewing, and Thirsty Monk Brewery and Pub.

While you’re in Asheville, don’t miss out on visiting one of the most beautiful homes in America: the Biltmore! The Biltmore was built by George Vanderbilt in 1889 as a family retreat and home and later opened to the public in 1930. Come experience the elegance and grandeur of the Biltmore by taking a tour of America’s largest home.

You can’t go wrong with a getaway to Asheville!

5. Nashville, Tennessee (3.5 hour)

Did you know the famed Music City is only three and a half hours away from Atlanta? Nashville is truly a living juxtaposition. It is a big city yet gives all the small-town vibes. It’s the hometown of country music yet it is a bit of Rock-and-Roll as well. The city is a great place to go out on the town yet there are quaint and quiet spots to experience all the Southern charm. Nashville is a bit of everything.

While you’re in Nashville, you have to check out the music and entertainment scene. You can find free live music at the Honky Tonks in lower Broadway in Nashville. Plus, you can find all genres of music at a variety of venues all around town. If you’re looking for other forms of entertainment, there are shows that fit your mood! Whether you’re looking for a comedy club or theatre show, Nashville has it all!

Nashville is always a good time and a great place for a fun friend’s’ getaway!  

6. Savannah, Georgia (4 hour)

Savannah, Georgia is consistently ranked amongst the best towns to visit in America, and there is no surprise why! With romantic moss-draped trees, cobblestone streets, and beautiful houses, Savannah is a very picturesque town. Not only is it one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited, but also one of the best food cities. 

I’ve been to Savannah more times than I can count, but there’s a reason I keep going back! Here are some of the spots you cannot miss in Savannah:

• Wormsloe Historic Site: This is one of the best photo spots in Savannah with an iconic avenue of live oaks and Spanish moss leading up to a historic site!
• River Street: This street is filled with restaurants, pubs, boutiques, and specialty shops! Plus, as the name implies…it is right along the Savannah Riverfront and offers amazing views.
• Forsyth Park: Located in the historic district of Savannah, Forsyth Park is the oldest and largest public park, spanning over 30 acres. This green space is a gathering place for locals and visitors alike with from picnicking with friends to simply strolling through the park.
• Chippewa Square: A must visit if you’re a Forrest Gump fan
• Leopold’s Ice Cream: Leopold’s is a staple in Savannah! If you’re in Savannah, you have to go to Leopold’s for ice cream.

A trip to Savannah means beach time as well since Hilton Head Island and Tybee Island are both short drives from the city. It gives you the best of both worlds as you can experience a beautiful and historic Southern town and also get to relax by the beach.

Savannah is the perfect getaway for couples and friends a like!

7. Gatlinburg, Tennessee (4 hour)

Gatlinburg is the perfect mountain getaway! This town nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains is full of fun entertainment, amusement parks, and tons of outdoors opportunities. It is great for families, friends, and couples!

Book a cozy cabin and head up to Gatlinburg to spend time in the mountains! Go into town for fun attractions such as laser tag, arcades, mini golf, escape rooms, and more. Some of the most popular spots in Gatlinburg include:

• Dollywood
• Gatlinburg Skylift Park
• Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies
• Anakeesta
• Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster
• Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway

There’s also plenty of outdoors opportunities in Gatlinburg as it is the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park! Go on the Applachian Trail, wander through a field of wildflowers, or hike to many of the waterfalls in the area. If you love the outdoors, then Gatlinburg is for you!

The mountains are calling and you must go!

8. Golden Isles, Georgia (5 hour)

The Georgia Golden Isles is one of the most underrated places in the US! With pristine beaches and diverse ecosystems and wildlife, the Golden Isles is a place of serene and captivating beauty. It is comprised of four barrier islands, St. Simons Island, Little St. Simmons, Sea Island, and Jekyll Island, and it is a great place for a relaxing getaway!

Not only are the Golden Isles rich in history and culture, there are world-class resorts and amenities found on each of the islands as well. If you’re a history buff, here are some places you have to check out: Fort Frederica, Christ Church, St. Simon’s Light Museum, Horton House, Jekyll Island Club. And if you’re a nature lover, don’t miss out on these spots: Driftwood Beach, Georgia Sea Turtle Center, 4-H Nature Center, and Horton Pond.

9. Charleston, South Carolina (5 hour)

Rich in history and culture, Charleston is a great weekend getaway from Atlanta. This southern town has a lot of charm and beauty and it is certainly a very picturesque place! There is plenty to do all over Charleston and it is the perfect romantic destination.

Starting with the outskirts of Charleston, there are several spots you have to visit! One of the most unforgettable places I’ve ever been is located north of Charleston and it is called Cypress Gardens. I highly recommend visiting and renting a rowboat for a self-guided tour through the cypress trees! If you’re a fan of the Notebook, then you’ll immediately recognize this place. You should also stop at the Angel Oak Tree to admire the 500 year old massive sprawling tree. There are other gardens in this area worth visiting as well including Magnolia Plantation and Gardens and Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens.

Within the city, there are several must visit locations! The best way to see Charleston is on feet as the historic district is very walkable. Broad Street, King Street, and Chalmers Street are some notable streets full of boutiques, shops, and restaurants. Be sure to head south of Broad Street to see beautiful homes and historic mansions! Two parks you should visit in Charleston are Joe Riley Waterfront Park and White Point Garden. Stop by the Historic Charleston City Market to shop at the 200 year old market, and you have to visit the famed Rainbow Row of course!

You can also visit the beach while you’re in Charleston! Folly Beach is a fun area with lots of restaurants and attractions. It is a very popular spot for visitors! If you’re looking for a quieter and more remote beach, check out Kiawah Island. It’s not established hence it is not as crowded here as Folly Beach.

Charleston is the perfect romantic getaway and its charm is why people keep coming back year after year!

10. Rosemary Beach, Florida (5.5 hour)

Would you believe me that one of the most beautiful beaches in the US is located just over five and a half hours from Atlanta? Rosemary Beach has some of the bluest waters I’ve ever seen. It is north of the popular Panama City Beach, but it attracts a very different crowd. It is much quieter in Rosemary Beach and the perfect beach getaway.

If you’re looking to spend time at the beach, then Rosemary Beach is the place for you. The town is super chic and charming with European styled architecture! Plus, there’s great restaurants and shops all around town. It is a great place to get some sun, take a stroll, and lay on the beach.

I highly recommend renting a bike to explore the nearby towns of Alys Beach, 30A, and Seaside as well! These beachside towns are also great to visit and easily accessible through a bike path. The bike ride is very scenic and takes you through colorful streets and beautiful homes right on the beach!

Where to Start Your West Virginia Road Trip

West Virginia is within a day’s drive from 2/3rds of the US population and just hours from major cities such as Washington D.C, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. You can choose to drive to West Virginia to start your road trip or you can fly into any of the major airports nearby and get a rental car. I flew direct from Atlanta to Pittsburgh and started my road trip driving from Pittsburgh towards West Virginia, hence I am starting this road trip in northern West Virginia. However, you can start the road trip wherever makes sense for you!

West Virginia Road Trip Stops

Morgantown

Morgantown is a beautiful mountain town in northern West Virginia. It is home to West Virginia University so it is a fun college town with plenty of school spirit! It has a lively downtown area full of highly-rated restaurants and boutique shops. Plus, there is even a fun and extensive brewery scene! Be sure to walk down High Street to check out the many local businesses!

Coopers Rock State Forest

Coopers Rock State Forest is just a short drive away from Morgantown and it is a great place to visit for sweeping views! This state forest is free to visit and has plenty of fun activities for everyone including picnicking, camping, and fishing. Plus there are more than fifty miles of hiking and biking trails winding throughout the woods here!

If you’re visiting West Virginia in the fall, Coopers Rock State Forest is a fantastic place to see fall colors! I recommend taking the Raven Rock Trail for stunning views. You also have to go to the main overlook for panoramic views over the forest.

Weston

Head to the historic town of Weston to experience one of West Virginia’s many charming mountain towns! Visit the historic Jackson’s Mill to see its beautiful grounds and a piece of West Virginia history. Check out the Museum Of American Glass to learn about the region and the nation’s rich glass heritage. Tour the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum to go inside this national landmark and hear about its fascinating yet dark history. Explore downtown Weston and check out Thyme Bistro and many of Weston’s best restaurants.

You can also find a luxury treehouse via Airbnb or VRBO in Weston! Head to Lambert’s Vintage Winery to taste some delicious wine and stay overnight at one of their luxury treehouse/cabins.

Stonewall Resort and State Park

Stonewall Resort is a luxurious resort located near Weston that offers a tranquil retreat on 1,900 acres. Its Adirondack-style lodge is perched alongside quiet lake waters with immaculate views of West Virginia’s rolling mountains. This resort is a great place to stay on your West Virginia road trip, but you can visit even if you’re not staying here.

The grounds are open to the public and you can dine at the many restaurants on the property, explore the beautiful interiors of the lodge, play a round or two of golf, or explore miles of hiking trails. There’s truly something at Stonewall Resort and State Park for everyone!

Elkins

Elkins is another charming small town to explore in West Virginia! Grab a specialty latte at TipTop. Stop by Byrd’s House Of Donuts for delicious donuts. Enjoy authentic Venezuelan fare & pan-Latin dishes at El Gran Sabor. Venture a few miles out of town to Bickle Knob Observation Tower for stunning panoramic views of the forests nearby.

Buckhannon

Only a 30-minute drive from Elkins, Buckhannon is a fun town to stop at on your West Virginia road trip! If you enjoy antiquing, then be sure to stop at Main Street Antiques to walk down memory lane. Support the local businesses in Buckhannon by shopping around downtown. Grab a specialty coffee or craft brew at Stone Tower Brews and enjoy a meal at Fish Hawk Acres for the freshest farm-to-table foods.

Audra State Park

Venture to Audra State Park for a scenic hike through caves! Take the Alum Creek And Cave Trail which is an easy 2.7-mile trail that includes a boardwalk that winds below the Alum Cave overhang and provides a spectacular view of the Middle Fork River. In places, it provides access to the river for wading and nature exploring. You can also choose to go biking, boating, camping, fishing, and swimming in this West Virginia state park!

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve

Welcome to America’s newest National Park! New River Gorge National Park encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along the New River, is rich in cultural and natural history, and offers an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities. The national park features the New River Gorge Bridge and a rugged, whitewater river flowing northward through deep canyons.

Start your visit to New River Gorge National Park at Canyon Rim Visitor Center where you can find maps and information about the park! From the visitor center, you can take a short walk to see the New River Gorge Bridge up close. Additionally, you can take the Long Point Trail which is a 3-mile out-and-back trail that offers beautiful views of the gorge, the river, and the New Gorge River Bridge. Take a drive on Fayette Station Rd towards the bottom of the canyon and stop at Tunney Hunsaker Bridge to enjoy a view of the bridge from below!

Babcock State Park

With 4,127 acres of stunning scenery, Babcock State Park is one of West Virginia’s most iconic locations. It is located 20 miles from the New River Gorge and features the Glade Creek Grist Mill, a fully functional replica of the original Cooper’s Mill, which once stood on the grounds. This state park is a photographer’s heaven!

Hawks Nest State Park

Encompassing 276 acres bordering a rugged section of the New River Gorge National River, Hawks Nest State Park is known for its panoramic views. You can choose to stay at the lodge which offers 31 rooms with stunning panoramic views of the New River Gorge, with some offering intimate, private balconies. If you choose not to stay overnight at the lodge, you can still enjoy breathtaking views of the New River Gorge by dining at The Overlook restaurant. There are also plenty of activities to enjoy at this state park including hiking, swimming, boating, and fishing!

Final Thoughts

West Virginia is one of the most underrated states in the US! The Mountain State is truly a breath of fresh air featuring world-class outdoor adventure, welcoming mountain towns, rich Appalachian culture and cuisine, and one-of-a-kind historic sites. 1. Walk along Boise River Greenbelt

Did you know that Boise is connected by a beautiful greenway? The Boise River Greenbelt is a 25-mile path that connects downtown Boise with different neighborhoods and parks along the Boise River. The Greenbelt offers opportunities for walking, biking, birding, and even fishing! This path takes you through so many different natural areas of Boise and it is a great way to explore and see Boise!

2. Check out the fun murals around downtown Boise

There are so many fun murals on display all over Boise! The most popular spot to see murals is Freak Alley Gallery which is the northwest’s largest open-air, multi-artist mural gallery. Located in the heart of downtown Boise, Freak Alley is a great place to admire public art and the murals are always changing so it offers a fresh breath of air for locals and visitors alike! It is free to visit so be sure to add this spot to your Boise bucket list.

You’ll also find murals all over downtown Boise so I highly recommend walking around the downtown district to see more of the unique street art. My personal favorite is the Boise mural located on 10th street on the side of Re-POP Gifts.

3. Try potato ice cream at Westside Drive-In

Have you ever tried potato ice cream? Yes, you heard that right…potato ice cream! How could you visit Idaho and not try everything potato related?! Visit the famous Westside Drive-In to try their famous potato ice cream. Westside Drive-In has been in operation since 1957 and was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” on the Food Network! Stop by for a taste of nostalgia and classic items like burgers, malts, salads, and shakes.

4. Swing on the Gentle Breeze sculpture

Gentle Breeze is a sculpture by Matthew Mazzotta in downtown Boise that I had to feature! The shiny pink tree has features that make the leaves move in the breeze and it has swings for people to enjoy making it an interactive art piece. I love how this sculpture is made for everyone to enjoy and use in this public space.

5. Grab donuts at Guru Donuts

You have to grab donuts at Guru Donuts if you’re visiting Boise! Gru’s Donut is a famous donut shop in downtown Boise and it features classic and specialty flavors. Their seasonal menu is so fun and I love their creative take on the classic donut. The donuts are made from scratch daily and the shop is locally owned and operated! So stop by for delicious donuts while supporting a local business

6. Check out the Record Exchange

The Record Exchange is Idaho’s largest independent music store and features a wide selection of records and other fun memorabilia. Even if you’re not looking to buy records, it is still a cool store to check out as they sell a wide variety of other items such as t-shirts and collectibles!

7. Learn about the Basque culture at Basque Block

Did you know that there is a large population of Basque people living in Boise? The Basques are a Southwestern European ethnic group and most of them live in the Basque country, which is an area between Spain and France. However, Boise’s Basque community is one of the largest such communities in the United States! They have a unique area called the Basque Block and they welcome all to come to learn about their heritage!

There is a market selling specialty Basque goods and products called the Basque Market that I recommend visiting. You can even dine there and they serve a selection of tapas, pintxos, and even paella!

8. Create your own fries at Boise Fry Company

Visit Boise Fry Company to create your own fries! You get to choose your potato and how it is cut – plus there are a variety of sauces to choose from! It is definitely a fun place to grab a bite and try out different fries.

9. Tour Idaho’s State Capitol

Idaho’s State Capital is a work of art. The building is stunning and you can’t miss out on touring the inside! The inside is just as remarkable as the exterior with towering marble columns. Be sure to stop by to see this impressive building!

10. Hike around Camel’s Back Park and Military Reserve

As mentioned earlier, Boise is surrounded by beautiful nature! If you enjoy hiking (or biking), two of the best places to go are Camel’s Back Park and the Military Reserve. Both of these areas are close to downtown Boise and offer miles and miles of trails. You’re instantly transported away from the bustling city as you step into these nature reserves.

11. Enjoy an afternoon at Idaho Botanical Garden

Idaho Botanical Garden is a beautiful space to walk around and enjoy the outdoors. The garden covers over 50 acres and there are numerous gardens from an English Garden to a Rose Garden and more!

12. Tour the Old Idaho Penitentiary Site

Right next to the Idaho Botanical Garden lays the Old Idaho Penitentiary Site which you can tour today! It was a functional prison from 1872 to 1973 and during these years, the site saw escapes, scandals, and the effects of Boise’s transition from the “wild west” to a mid-20th century capital city. Enter these walls to take a step back in time!

13. See the sunset at Table Rock

Hike to the top of Table Rock for the best sunset in Boise! The 3.7-mile hike offers scenic overlooks and views of the city. The views from Table Rock are so rewarding and I highly recommend anyone to make that hike.

14. Visit the many wineries and breweries around Boise

Did you know that there are several wineries and breweries in and around Boise? If you enjoy the brewery and winery scene, then you should definitely stop by these:

15. See the famous potato hotel

Did you know that you can stay inside a potato near Boise? This is the famous Idaho Potato Hotel and it is just 20 miles away from Boise. Recycled from the Idaho Potato Commission’s Big Idaho Potato Tour, this 6-ton potato has traveled on the back of a semi to 48 different states for 7 years! It is now sitting on farmland and rented out. Even if you’re not a guest of the hotel, you can still visit and take photos of the outside!

Vail, Colorado is one of the best places to visit in the US! While it is well-known for its ski resort and a popular winter destination, Vail in summer is an absolute dream. If you’ve never visited Vail in summer, then you’re seriously missing out! There is so much to do in Vail in the summer from hiking and horseback riding to fine dining and shopping. 1. Explore Vail Village and Lionshead Village

Vail Village and Lionshead Village are two villages at the base of Vail Mountain and they are straight out of a fairytale! You’ll feel like you were transported into a storybook. The architecture here is so charming and it is fun to just walk around town. One of the best parts about Vail is that it is very walkable and car-free. There are unique shops and great dining options in both of these towns.

2. Take a stroll along the river

There is a beautiful river that runs through Vail and the walk between Vail Village and Lionshead Village is beautiful. Walk along Gore Creek to get between the two villages. It is a very scenic trail that takes you away from the bustle of town.

3. Visit the world’s highest botanical garden

Located at an altitude of 8,200 feet, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is the world’s highest botanical garden. It is free to visit and just a short walk from Vail Village. Come explore this beautiful botanic garden and see unique alpine plants. Be sure to check their calendar before your visit to see if there is a special event going on!

4. See Vail from the scenic gondola

Take the scenic gondola up to Vail Mountain to see Vail from new heights! You can take the Eagle Bahn gondola from Lionshead Village to Vail Mountain. The gondola is open from mid-June to October and provides you access to the various hiking trails atop Vail Mountain. The views from Vail Mountain are spectacular!

5. Experience Vail Mountain’s Epic Discovery

Although you can’t ski in Vail in the summer, there are still plenty of fun activities atop Vail Mountain. Get an Epic Discovery Adventure Pass to experience the many attractions on Vail Mountain from the mountain coaster to mini-golf. The Adventure Pass includes a scenic gondola ride as well so you don’t have to purchase a separate gondola ticket if you’re planning to go up!

6. Have a romantic picnic

There is nothing more romantic and magical than having a private picnic in beautiful scenery. Picnic Vail takes care of everything: the setup, the food, and the cleaning up. Enjoy delicious food and wine while enjoying each other’s company!

It is a lot of fun for the whole family or with friends!

8. Play a round…or two of golf

It offers both cabins and glamping tents plus a variety of outdoor activities. Even if you are not staying at Piney River Ranch, you can still go horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, fly fishing, hiking, and paddleboarding. It is open to the public and the Piney Lake Trail is a beautiful hike.

10. Go flyfishing

Flyfishing is a very popular activity in Vail! With incredible rivers and creeks in the area, it is no wonder Vail is a flyfishing destination. There are multiple tour operators in Vail offering guided fly fishing trips and tours in Colorado’s Vail Valley.

Where to Stay in Vail

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Vail, I highly recommend staying at Four Seasons Resort in Vail! I stayed at Four Seasons Vail during my trip to Vail and had an incredible stay. This five-star resort is just steps away from Vail Village. You are in the heart of Vail!

The resort itself is beautiful and the amenities are endless. Some amenities include a fitness center and spa. I loved the pool and hot tub in the center of their property! They also have a Mercedes Benz SUV that is complimentary for guests to use. I took the car to Piney Lake and it was perfect for off-roading.

There are also great dining options at Four Seasons Vail. You wouldn’t even have to leave the property if you didn’t want to! They have in-room dining services and restaurants on the property including the Remedy Bar, which is a great spot for cocktails, and Flame, an upscale steakhouse with an extensive menu.

The resort staff were welcoming and went above and beyond to ensure I had a great stay!

Where to Eat in Vail

There are so many great dining options in Vail and it features some of the best restaurants in Colorado! I am listing some of my favorite places to eat below:

• Vintage: Charming French brasserie serving a menu of classic fare and specialty cocktails; a great spot for brunch!
• Alpenrose: Bavarian-style restaurant that serves German and Austrian food and homemade pastries; a great spot for a romantic dinner.
• Flame Restaurant: Stylish steakhouse in Four Seasons Vail for premium steaks, mountain fare & cocktails; offers an extensive menu from lobster mac & cheese and vegetarian quinoa risotto to premium cuts!
• Le Bottega: High-end restaurant featuring Italian cuisine and an extensive wine list!
• Tavern on the Square: Chic, contemporary New American restaurant & bar featuring creative selections and craft cocktails.
• Rimini Gelato and Chocolate: This cute gelato shop serves a wide variety of sweets! Their hot chocolate is delicious!
