Cinque Terre, located on the rugged coast of the Italian Riviera, is a stunning and unique travel destination renowned for its picturesque landscapes, colorful villages, and breathtaking coastal views. “Cinque Terre” translates to “Five Lands”, referring to the five small seaside towns that make up this UNESCO World Heritage Site: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. This area was even the inspiration for the setting of the Disney film, “Luca”. It truly is one of the most beautiful places in Italy. I’ve been numerous times myself and am excited to share the best things to do in Cinque Terre!

Is Cinque Terre Worth Visiting?

I get this question a lot and…absolutely! I’ve traveled to over 40 countries and Cinque Terre is still one of my favorite places to visit.

Here’s why you need to visit Cinque Terre!

1. Scenic Beauty: The rugged coastline of Cinque Terre is characterized by steep cliffs, terraced vineyards, and crystal-clear waters, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.
2. Colorful Villages: Each of the five villages has its own unique charm and character, with brightly colored houses perched precariously on cliffsides. Exploring the narrow, winding streets of these villages is like stepping back in time.
3. Hiking Trails: Cinque Terre is renowned for its network of hiking trails that meander through vineyards, olive groves, and along the coastline, offering breathtaking views at every turn. The most famous trail is the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), which connects all five villages.
4. Local Cuisine: The region is famous for its fresh seafood, pesto sauce, and Ligurian specialties. Visitors can enjoy delicious meals at local trattorias and seaside restaurants, accompanied by regional wines such as Sciacchetrà.
5. Cultural Heritage: In addition to its natural beauty, Cinque Terre boasts a rich cultural heritage, with historic churches, castles, and ancient fortifications scattered throughout the region. Visitors can explore these landmarks to learn more about the area’s history and traditions.

Cinque Terre vs Amalfi Coast

I personally prefer Cinque Terre over the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Coast is known for its upscale resorts, luxury hotels, and high-end dining options while Cinque Terre is known for its rugged coastline, colorful houses, and terraced vineyards. Don’t get me wrong…the Amalfi Coast is definitely worth a visit, but I prefer to visit Cinque Terre between the two. There is also more variety of things to do in Cinque Terre! How to Get to Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is on the Ligurian Coast of Italy and is located between the cities of La Spezia to the south and Levanto to the north. If you’re flying into Italy, chances are you’re flying into Milan or Rome. Train travel is the best way to get to and around Cinque Terre as there is a train station at each of the five villages and it’s about a 5-minute ride from each town. I suggest getting the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card which allows for unlimited train travel between the La Spezia, the Cinque Terre villages, and Levanto.

• Milan: You can take a train from Milano Centrale (Milan’s main station) to Monterosso which is the northernmost of the five villages. From Monterosso al Mare you can take a train to any of the other villages.
• Rome: You can take a train from Roma Termini (Rome’s main station) to La Spezia which is south of the Cinque Terre. From La Spezia, you can easily take a train to any of the five villages.
• Florence: In terms of major cities, Cinque Terre is located closest to Florence. If you’re coming from Florence, you can take a 1.5-hour train from Firenze Campo Marte to La Spezia.

Tip: I suggest downloading the Trenitalia app if you plan to visit Italy! It is a super useful app and allows you to purchase train tickets, find train schedules, and even track the location of trains.

The Towns of Cinque Terre

As mentioned earlier, five coastal villages make up Cinque Terre. Each of them are different and have their own unique characteristics. You definitely have to visit each of them! Don’t make the mistake of skipping any one of them. Here’s an overview of each of the five villages of Cinque Terre!

Starting from north to south…

Monterosso al Mare:

• The largest of the five villages.
• Divided into two distinct parts: the old town and the new town.
• Features a long sandy beach, making it a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming.

Vernazza:

• Often considered the most picturesque of the Cinque Terre villages.
• Characterized by a small natural harbor surrounded by pastel-colored buildings.
• Features a medieval castle, the Castello Doria, offering panoramic views of the village and coastline.
• The main square, Piazza Marconi, is lined with cafes and restaurants, ideal for enjoying local cuisine.
• Offers access to hiking trails, including the famous Sentiero Azzurro.

Corniglia:

• Unique among the Cinque Terre villages as it is situated on top of a promontory, not directly on the sea.
• Accessible by climbing a long staircase (or shuttle bus from the train station).
• Known for its terraced vineyards and panoramic views of the surrounding coastline.
• Features a tranquil atmosphere with fewer tourists compared to other villages.

Manarola:

• Famous for its colorful houses perched on steep cliffs overlooking the sea.
• Features a picturesque harbor where fishing boats can often be seen.
• Offers a scenic walking path along the cliffs, providing stunning views of the village and coastline.
• Known for its locally produced wine, particularly the sweet Sciacchetrà dessert wine.

Riomaggiore:

• The southernmost village of Cinque Terre.
• Offers a rocky beach where visitors can relax and swim in the clear waters.
• Known for its vibrant atmosphere, especially during sunset when the cliffs and buildings are bathed in golden light.

Cinque Terre offers numerous activities and experiences for visitors to enjoy its stunning coastal landscapes, charming villages, and delicious cuisine. Here are some of the best things to do in Cinque Terre:

1. Explore each of the five coastal villages

Needless to say, you need to visit all five villages of Cinque Terre. Each of the five villages in Cinque Terre has its own unique charm and attractions. Wander through the narrow streets, admire the colorful houses, and visit local shops and cafes. Highlights include the harbors of Vernazza and Riomaggiore, the medieval churches of Manarola and Corniglia, and the castle in Vernazza. Keep reading for the best things to do in Cinque Terre!

2. Hike the Cinque Terre Trails

The Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) is a network of hiking trails that connects all five villages of Cinque Terre. The trails offer breathtaking views of the coastline, terraced vineyards, and the Mediterranean Sea. The trail is well-marked with signs indicating distances and difficulty levels. It’s suitable for hikers of all skill levels, although some sections may be steep and rugged. The full hike from Monterosso al Mare to Riomaggiore is 7 miles (11 km) and takes about 5-6 hours to complete, depending on your pace and any stops along the way.

You don’t have to do the full trail as you can opt to do shorter portions of the Blue Trail. The trail takes you through each of the five villages so you can pick a village to start and stop. Here are the most popular short trails:

• Riomaggiore to Manarola (known as Via dell’Amore): Due to landslides, this trail has been closed for a while but will reopen July 2024.
• Monterosso to Vernazza: 3.5 km long moderate hike, takes 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on the number of stops you make.
• Vernazza to Corniglia – 3.5 km long and it takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to complete.

Note: You need a Cinque Terre Trail Pass to access the trails.

3. Relax on the Beach in Monterosso

Cinque Terre boasts several beautiful spots where visitors can soak up the sun and swim in the crystal-clear waters. If you’re looking for an actual beach, I recommend Monterosso al Mare. It has the largest beach in Cinque Terre and there are even beach chairs available for rental. Monteresso al Mare’s beach is known as Spiaggia di Fegina and it is just steps away from the Monteresso train station.

4. Go on a Boat Tour

A great way to see Cinque Terre is by boat! Boat trips offer stunning views of the villages perched on the cliffs, hidden coves, and secluded beaches. Sunset cruises are great for capturing unforgettable views of the coast bathed in golden light!

5. Enjoy lunch with a view at Nessum Dorma

One of the most iconic views in Cinque Terre can be enjoyed over bruschetta and drinks. Nessum Dorma offers an amazing panoramic view of Manarola while serving delicious small bites including bruschetta, charcuterie platters, and local wine. Dining here is one of the best things to do in Cinque Terre and its popularity has soared over the last few years! I highly recommend getting on the wait list right at the opening time the day of.

Tip: Download the Nessum Dorma app to get in line virtually when the restaurant opens. They don’t take reservations.

6. Take a Pesto Making Class

Pesto sauce is a staple of Ligurian cuisine, and it’s often served with pasta dishes such as trofie or trenette. Locals in Cinque Terre and the surrounding area have been making pesto for generations, using traditional methods passed down through families. Many restaurants and trattorias in Cinque Terre feature pesto on their menus, often served with freshly made pasta or drizzled over grilled fish or vegetables.

7. Try Cinque Terre Wine

Did you know that Cinque Terre has terraced vineyards along its cliffs? Winemaking here is no feat and you have to try the local wines. There are two main local wines: the Cinque Terre DOC and the Sciacchetrà DOC.

8. Enjoy the calm in Corniglia

Corniglia is not like the other towns…and for better and for worse. First, unlike the other towns, to get to the center of Corniglia you have to climb up 365 steps. At the same time, it is the least visited and where to get away from crowds and enjoy the calm.

Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets of Corniglia and admire its charming pastel-colored houses, ancient buildings, and picturesque squares. Visit the Church of San Pietro and enjoy the panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. Unlike the other villages, Corniglia is situated on a cliff overlooking the sea, providing stunning views of the coastline.

9. Visit Doria Castle in Vernazza

Doria Castle is perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the village of Vernazza. Its strategic position provides panoramic views of the coastline and surrounding landscape. The castle dates back to the 11th century when it was built as a defensive structure to protect the village from pirate attacks. Today, Doria Castle is open to visitors who can explore its historic premises and enjoy panoramic views from its ramparts. You can climb up to the castle via a series of steps and pathways and take in breathtaking vistas of Vernazza and the surrounding coastline.

10. Enjoy apertivo at Piazza Marconi in Vernazza

Piazza Marconi is the main square in Vernazza and you can enjoy views of Vernaza’s picturesque harbor. The square is relatively small but bustling with activity. Colorful buildings, shops, cafes, and restaurants surround the square, giving it a vibrant and lively atmosphere. It is a great spot to enjoy apertivo at the outdoor seating at the cafes and restaurants, making it an ideal spot for people-watching and soaking up the village ambiance.

11. Swim in natural pools in Vernazza and Manorola

Although Monterosso is the only village with a real sandy beach, you can still sunbathe and swim in natural pools in both Vernazza and Manarola. The Vernazza and Manarola Harbor are great places to swim and sunbathe.

12. See the sunset in Manarola

Watching the sunset in Manarola is a magical experience. Manarola offers several vantage points from which to watch the sunset but my favorite is the viewpoint near Nessun Dorma. Make sure to get there early to secure a good spot. After the sun has set, stick around for twilight, when the sky takes on a deep blue hue and the lights of the village start to twinkle. It’s a magical time to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the peacefulness of the evening.

13. Try a seafood cone at Tutti Fritti in Riomaggiore

In Cinque Terre, particularly in the village of Riomaggiore, it’s common to find local seafood delicacies served in a cone-shaped container. These seafood cones are a popular and convenient way to enjoy fresh seafood while exploring the picturesque coastal villages. Tutti Fritti is a great place in Riomaggiore to get fried seafood including fried fish fillets, shrimp, calamari rings, and other seafood items.

14. Climb on the rocks in Riomaggiore

One of the best views in Cinque Terre can be seen from the rocks in Riomaggiore. Head to the harbor of Riomaggiore and climb up some steps that will lead you to the path to the rocks! The view from the rocks is fantastic and you’ll get a great view of Riomaggiore.

How to Get Around Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is actually very easy to get around! All five villages are connected by train and the train ride between each town is about 5 minutes. The Cinque Terre Express is the regional train line and it is easy to hop between towns. The center of the towns is also just minutes walk away from the train stations making train travel the best option to get around Cinque Terre,

Since it is so convenient to visit the different villages of Cinque Terre, I suggest picking one place as the home base and then exploring the rest of the Cinque Terre towns from there. 

Tip: Get the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card for unlimited train rides in Cinque Terre. These tickets can be purchased from Trenitalia authorized ticket offices, self-service ticket machines in stations in La Spezia and Cinque Terre region, the Trenitalia App, Cinque Terre National Park sales points, and online.

Choosing the best town to stay in Cinque Terre depends on your preferences, budget, and travel style. Each of the five villages has its unique charm and attractions, so here’s an overview to help you decide:

Monterosso al Mare: The Beachy One

This is the largest and most tourist-friendly village in Cinque Terre, making it a popular choice for visitors. It has the widest range of accommodations, including hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals. The sandy beach and lively atmosphere make it a great option for families and those seeking a more resort-like experience. Another plus about staying in Monterosso is that you won’t have to climb steep hills to get to your accommodation as this town isn’t built on a high cliff.

B&B Il Parco is a 10-minute walk from the nearest beach in Monterosso. It provides a sun terrace, an outdoor pool with sun loungers and sea-view accommodation. (Budget) Affittacamere Da Cesare: If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, Affittacamere Da Cesare offers comfortable guest rooms with a welcoming atmosphere. It is family-owned and you can feel the hospitality of the hosts! It’s located near the beach and the train station, making it convenient for exploring Monterosso and the surrounding areas.

Vernazza: The Picturesque One

Corniglia: The Quiet and Peaceful One

Situated high on a cliff, Corniglia is the smallest and quietest of the Cinque Terre villages. It offers a more relaxed and secluded atmosphere compared to the other towns. Accommodations here are limited but include a few small hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. Corniglia is a great choice for those seeking peace and tranquility away from the crowds. However, I personally would not recommend staying in Corniglia as you need to climb over 350 steps from the train station to get to town. There is a shuttle but that shuttle gets packed during peak travel season!

(Midrange) Affittacamere Le Terrazze

(Midrange) Affittacamere Arbasia De Ma

Arbasia De Ma offers basic rooms overlooking the sea. The rooms of Affittacamere Arbasia De Ma, Terre Marine offer views of the Ligurian Sea and come with an equipped kitchenette and a terrace.

Manarola: The Central One

This accommodation is one of the best places to stay in Manarola! It offers a beautiful view of Manarola. Il Sogno di Manarola by The First’s prominent feature is the rooftop terrace, which offers a stunning 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

(Midrange) Affittacamere San Giorgio

You’ll find stunning sea views at Affittacamere San Giorgio! The apartment is spacious and air-conditioned and offers free WiFi. Although it is a slight trek, the phenomenal views over Manarola is worth the climb.

Riomaggiore: The Lively One

The southernmost village in Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore is known for its steep cliffs, colorful houses, and vibrant atmosphere. It offers a range of accommodations, including hotels, guesthouses, and apartments. Riomaggiore is a great choice for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the local culture and nightlife. If you’re looking for nightlife, this is your best bet in the Cinque Terre as the other towns get quiet after dark.

Best Hotels in Riomaggiore

(Luxury) Crêuza de Mä

(Midrange) Ai Pesci Room Rental

Ai Pesci Room Rental is a highly-rated accommodation in Riomaggiore! With sea views, all guest rooms feature air conditioning and a flat-screen TV. You can choose to stay in a room with a balcony and there is also a rooftop where you can enjoy the postcard views of Riomaggiore.

(Midrange) Scorci Di Mare

Scorci Di Mare is a 14th-century building on Riomaggiore’s rocky coast. It offers sea-view rooms with modern furnishings and tiles. Some have a balcony and a kitchenette. The town center, full of restaurants and bars, can be reached by climbing a flight of steps near the Scorci Di Mare. The Riomaggiore train station is about 1000 ft away.

Consider Staying in La Spezia…

Another option is to stay in the town of La Spezia. Although La Spezia is not part of Cinque Terre, it is the gateway to Cinque Terre. La Spezia serves as a convenient base for exploring the Cinque Terre region, offering a wider range of accommodations and amenities compared to the smaller villages. Staying in La Spezia is often more affordable than staying directly in the Cinque Terre villages, especially during peak tourist season. You can enjoy cost savings without sacrificing convenience or comfort by staying in La Spezia.

In addition to accommodation, La Spezia offers a wide range of amenities and services, including restaurants, cafes, shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, and banks. You’ll find everything you need for a comfortable and convenient stay in the larger city. If you have large luggage or a rental car, I highly recommend staying in La Spezia as it is much easier to accommodate than Cinque Terre.

The main train station and the shopping area are just a 20-minute stroll away or can be reached via the frequent buses that stop near the hotel. The location makes it easy to explore Cinque Terre and other nearby attractions.

(Midrange) Affittacamere Casa Dane’

If you prefer a more intimate option, consider staying at Casa Dane’. Affittacamere Casa Dane’ offers colorfully decorated rooms with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and a flat-screen TV. The property is just 100 meters from La Spezia Train Station. Casa Dane also offers free bikes for exploring La Spezia city center. The surrounding area is full of shops, bars and restaurants.

The nearest major airport to Lake Como is Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of the lake. From the airport, you can take a direct train to Como or use other transportation options such as buses, taxis, or rental cars to reach your desired destination on Lake Como.

Como: The largest town on Lake Como, Como offers a mix of history, culture, and modern amenities. Como can be reached by a direct train from Milan! Como also has a wide selection of hotels, restaurants, and shops, making it a convenient base for exploring the lake and surrounding area.

Varenna: Varenna is another picturesque town on Lake Como that can easily be accessible by train as well. Nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Varenna features narrow alleys, historic churches, and villas. There are stunning views of the lake and mountains from Varenna! Varenna offers a range of accommodation options, including hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals, with many properties overlooking the lake.

Bellagio: Often referred to as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” Bellagio is one of the most popular towns on the lake. It’s known for its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Bellagio offers a range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to cozy bed and breakfasts. Vista Palazzo is a high-end hotel that is within a 5-minute walk of both Lago Como train station and Como Cathedral. It is the only five-star luxury hotel in the city center of Como and is also just steps from the shores of Lake Como. You have the best of both worlds at Vista Palazzo!

Midrange: Hilton Lake Como

Hilton Lake Como is a polished hotel that is 1 km from both the Como San Giovanni train station and Villa Olmo, an 18th-century manor with lakefront gardens. It is the first Hilton hotel in the Lake Como region and a great option if you’re a Hilton Honors member to earn and/or redeem points! It features a rooftop infinity pool and several restaurants and bars.

Budget: Ostello Bello Lake Como

Ostello Bello Lake Como is a laid-back hostel that is a 3-minute walk from the banks of Lake Como, an 8-minute walk from Como San Giovanni train station, and a 10-minute walk from Como Cathedral. It features basic private rooms, and mixed-gender and female-only dorms. A breakfast buffet, dinner, and tea and coffee are all included, and there’s free food in a communal kitchen. Other amenities consist of a roof terrace and a garden with hammocks.

Budget: Residence Diaz

Residence Diaz is a small 15th-century building in Como’s historical center. It offers apartments with a kitchen and free WiFi. How To Spend One Day in Verona

If you only have one day in Verona, here is how to best spend a day in this beautiful city!

Morning in Verona

8:00 AM: Breakfast at Cafe Carducci

Start your one day in Verona with breakfast at Cafe Carducci! Cafe Carducci is a historical restaurant in historic Verona that is a great breakfast place. The restaurant is cozy with a great ambiance. Be sure to grab some coffee, and brioche pastry here! You also have to try their omelets – they are divine.

9:00 AM: Visit Juliet’s House

After breakfast, head to Juliet’s House or Casa di Giulietta. This is the most popular attraction to visit so you want to get there at opening time! This is a must visit if you only have one day in Verona.

This house is traditionally believed to have belonged to the Capello family, who might have inspired William Shakespeare’s famous play “Romeo and Juliet.” Capello is a name similar to the Italian version of “Capulet” which is Capelletti. The house dates back to the 13th century but the famous balcony wasn’t added until the 20th century. While the historical connection to the Capello family is uncertain, the house has become a symbol of the tragic love story.

It was also made popular from the movie, Letters to Juliet, where an American woman travels to Verona and visits Juliet’s House and discovers a decades-old letter for Juliet that was unanswered. Of course, she reunites the lovers in the end and she ends up finding love herself, but the movie highlights the custom of leaving a letter for Juliet. People can drop off letters concerning love, heartbreak, advice, etc., and get a response from the secretaries of Juliet.

When you visit, you can drop off your very own letter to Juliet! I’ve actually done it twice and have gotten responses each time.

The attraction features a courtyard with a statue of Juliet and a museum with exhibits related to the play, including costumes and props from various stage productions of “Romeo and Juliet.” There is a tradition of rubbing the right breast of the statue in the courtyard for good luck in love.

The courtyard is free to visit but the museum and access to the balcony have an entrance fee. If you’re in Verona for a day, I suggest getting the 24-Hour Verona Card as it includes many of the attractions on this itinerary and public transport.

Note: Juliet’s House is closed on Mondays.

10:00 AM: Climb Torre dei Lamberti

After visiting Juliet’s House, head to Torre dei Lamberti which is a medieval tower located in the historic center of Verona, Italy. This tower is one of the highest structures in Verona and offers panoramic views of the city. You can climb to the top using the staircase or an elevator! The viewing platform on the tower offers breathtaking views of Verona and its surrounding landscape, including the Adige River and the historic architecture of the city.

Entrance to Torre dei Lamberti is also included in the 24-Hour Verona Card as mentioned earlier.

11:00 AM: Stroll and shop around Piazza del Erbe

After climbing Torre dei Lamberti, head down to the square the tower is located at which is the famous Piazza del Erbe.

The square is surrounded by historic buildings and colorful facades and is known for its vibrant market and lively atmosphere. Piazza del Erbe is known for its outdoor market, where vendors sell a variety of products such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, and local crafts. The market is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a lively and colorful environment.

As you’re exploring Piazza del Erbe, make sure to snap a photo in front of the fountain in the center! This is the Madonna Verona Fountain which is a beautiful Renaissance fountain built in 1368 that features a statue of Madonna Verona, the symbolic protector of the city.

Afternoon in Verona

12:00 PM: Lunch at Osteria Giulietta e Romeo

Now it is time for lunch! Head to Osteria Giulietta e Romeo for traditional Veronese cuisine. Osteria Giulietta e Romeo is located in the heart of Verona and offers Veronese cuisine dishes such as pasta e fasoi, bigoli all’asino, pappardelle all’anitra, gnocchi al ragù, and pastisada de caval con polenta.

They serve a wide variety of first and second courses and over 150 wine choices. I ordered a pumpkin tortellini as the first course and a chicken with roasted potatoes dish for the second and both were delicious! I’ve been here multiple times and highly recommend it as a lunch spot.

1:00 PM Arena di Verona

After lunch, it is time to tour Arena di Verona!

The Arena di Verona is a Roman amphitheater located in Verona and it is one of the best-preserved ancient amphitheaters in the world! It is known for its stunning architecture and cultural significance. This is a must-visit for your one day in Verona.

It was built around 30 AD during the Roman Empire and it is believed to have been used for gladiator contests and public spectacles such as animal hunts and mock sea battles.

Today, the Arena di Verona is best known for its opera performances. The first opera was performed there in 1913, and since then, the arena has become a world-famous venue for opera productions. The open-air setting and acoustics of the arena create a unique and enchanting experience. If you’re visiting during the summer months from June to September, be sure to look into attending a performance at the arena!

You can get priority entrance to the Arena di Verona with the 24-Hour Verona Card which is another reason to get the travel pass!

2:30 PM: Walk across Ponte di Castelvecchio

Ponte di Castelvecchio is a historic and notable bridge in Verona that is just a 5-minute walk from Arena di Verona. It spans the Adige River in Verona, connecting the eastern and western parts of the city. It is free to visit and it is a beautiful walk on the bridge!

3:00 PM Visit the Verona Cathedral

The Verona Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare, is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the historic city of Verona, Italy. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is the seat of the bishop of Verona. The cathedral is a significant religious and architectural landmark, showcasing a mix of different styles due to its long construction history.

The inside of the church is lavish and features frescoed interiors and artwork. The cathedral is open to visitors.

3:30 PM Mid-day Break

Take a mid-day break and grab a drink or bite at the Bar at the Cathedral Cafe. It is located just across from the Verona Cathedral and features coffees and pastries in a quaint garden setting.

4:00 PM: Stroll across Ponte Pietra

The Ponte Pietra is a Roman arch bridge that spans the Adige River and is one of the oldest and most iconic bridges in Verona. It offers stunning views of the Adige River, the city of Verona, and the surrounding hills. The picturesque setting makes it a popular spot to take photos as well!

4:30 PM: Visit Giusti Garden

During your one day in Verona, you have to visit the beautiful Giusti Garden! It is a historic Renaissance garden located in the heart of Verona, Italy. Established in the 16th century, the garden is renowned for its architectural features, statues and sculptures, meticulously designed layout, and scenic beauty. It is one of the oldest gardens of its kind in Italy and has been well-preserved over the centuries.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers visitors a peaceful retreat within the bustling city of Verona.

Evening in Verona

5:30 PM: Watch sunset at Castel San Pietro

Castel San Pietro provides the best views in all of Verona. You want to head up to this hilltop fortress before sunset to watch the city transform from day to night. It is free to visit and truly has a beautiful view! You need to witness the sunset here during your one day in Verona!

7:00 PM: Dinner at Osteria il Ciottolo

After watching sunset at Castel San Pietro, grab dinner at Osteria il Ciottolo. This spot is a local favorite thus you won’t find a tourist menu here! This restaurant serves traditional Veronese pasta and game dishes. It interior of the restaurant is cozy and has a charming atmosphere.

8:30 PM: Gelato at Gelateria La Romana

End your one day in Verona with gelato at one of the best gelato shops in Italy! I’ve had my fair share of gelato and Gelateria La Romana is one of the best. Gelateria La Roman was born in the heart of the historic center of Rimini in 1947, receiving the name of the founder’s daughter. It opened its doors in Verona in 2013 and has now quickly expanded to other locations.

I love that they fill the bottom of their cones with melted chocolate and this is my favorite gelato shop in Verona!

Located just about an hour from Verona is Lake Garda. It is actually the largest lake in Italy! It is less crowded than the popular Lake Como but just as beautiful! Colorful towns dot Lake Garda and some to check out include Sirmione, Desenzano del Garda, Riva del Garda, Malcesine, and Limone sul Garda.

Santuario Madonna della Corona

The Santuario Madonna della Corona is a spectacular sanctuary perched on a cliff in the Monte Baldo mountain range, overlooking the Adige Valley and Lake Garda in northern Italy. It is about 40 minutes from Verona which makes it great for a half-day trip.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Santuario Madonna della Corona is its breathtaking location. It is built into the side of a sheer rock face, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below. The sanctuary seems to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape.

Padua

Best Instagram Spots in Venice

1. Rialto Bridge

The Rialto Bridge is one of the most iconic bridges in the world! Did you know that it is one of only four bridges that crosses the Grand Canal?

I suggest getting here early in the morning as the bridge becomes quite crowded during the day. I suggest arriving around sunrise to have the bridge to yourself. There are several great viewpoints to capture a photo of yourself with the bridge. The one in the picture below is on the side of Palazzo dei Camerlenghi.

2. Grand Canal from Rialto Bridge

The view of the Grand Canal from Rialto Bridge is one of the most spectacular sights I’ve ever seen! It is absolutely stunning. You would be remiss to not stop here for a few minutes and admire the view. If you come here at sunrise, you can see boats and people scurrying around as they get ready to welcome visitors for the day.

The sunset from here is vibrant but it gets very crowded around that time. I would still suggest seeing the sunset from here, but don’t expect to capture an empty photo!

3. St. Mark’s Square

Welcome to one of the most famous squares in the world! St. Mark’s Square is a bustling square that is typically full of people. It is surrounded on all four sides by shops, restaurants, cafes, and St. Mark’s Basilica. If you want to capture a photo without a crowd, I suggest coming here very early in the morning.

4. Canal view from St. Mark’s Square

The canal view from St. Mark’s Square is stunning! Here you’ll find a view of gondolas on the Grand Canal with the Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore in the background. It certainly makes a stunning shot!

5. Hotel Santa Chiara

You can get a beautiful photo of the Grand Canal and passing boats right in front of Hotel Santa Chiara. It is close to the main bus and ferry station in Venice, Piazzale Roma, so it is easy to capture a photo here. I actually stayed at this hotel and loved my stay here.

Hotel Santa Chiara is newly renovated with free wifi and air-conditioning (which isn’t common in many Venice hotels so be sure to check). I loved the complimentary breakfast as well! If you stay here, you can take the private boat to their sister hotels, Locanda Vivaldi and Palazzo Stern.

By staying at any of one of these hotels, you have access to all three!

6. Libreria Acqua Alta

Libreria Acqua Alta is a unique bookstore that you definitely want to check out while you’re in Venice. It is home to lots of vintage books…and cats. It’s a great spot to browse around for books and there are great photo opportunities in this bookstore. There is a parked gondola and cool stacks of books in the back!

Make sure to check the hours of the bookstore before going as you need to enter the bookshop in order to take a photo with the stack of books. I initially thought it was outside the bookstore and went before it opened and had to come back later!

7. Bridge of Sighs

This beautiful arched bridge actually has a sad history. It is named for the sighs of prisoners crossing it on their way to prison. There are two great spots to take a photo with the Bridge of Sighs. There is a bridge in front of the Bridge of Sighs that you stand or sit on and there is also a ledge below that allows you to capture a photo with the bridge.

8. Scala Contarini del Bovolo

You can get a great view of Venice from Scala Contarini del Bovolo! It is also famous for its external multi-arch spiral staircase. I highly recommend booking tickets online in advance as it does sell out.

To capture a great photo here, go to the top level and have your photographer stand like the photo below and stick your head out of one of the arches.

9. Burano Island

You cannot miss this colorful fisherman’s village when you’re visiting Venice! The island of Burano is just an hour away from Venice and you can easily take a day trip here.

There are public ferries from Venice to Burano and I suggest using Google Maps to find out which ferries to take to Burano as there are multiple departure points in Venice.

Burano is actually famous for its lace so be sure to check out the lace shops on the island! I also suggest stopping in Murano which is another island near Venice. Murano is famous for its glass-blowing.

You can also do a tour from Venice to both Burano and Murano if you want to visit both islands. You can check out the tour here!

10. Hotel San Moise

There are so many beautiful canal views in Venice, but I actually want to share the exact locations of the best ones! I remember when I was researching for photo spots in Venice that the locations were very generic and most descriptions just said Venice canal…which of course was not helpful!

I made it a point to remember where each of these locations was so I can share exactly where to find them. The first one below is right near Hotel San Moise. Navigate yourself to the hotel and you’ll find this dock in the corner in front of the hotel. If you visit in the afternoon and early evening, you’ll find gondolas coming through here! This spot isn’t very crowded so you can come here any time of the day. I visited right before sunset!

11. Ponte Bernardo

It is so easy to stumble upon beautiful viewpoints in Venice and this spot was one of them! I was walking from my hotel to St. Mark’s Square when I found this bridge. The view was so beautiful here that I had to stop and snap a few photos!

12. Hotel Splendid Venice

I cannot get over how colorful the buildings are here! I was ironically crossing another bridge when I saw this viewpoint and ran over to the bridge in the photo below. In the photo, Hotel Splendid Venice is the building on the left (to give you a point of reference).

There is truly no other city in the world quite like Venice! This Italian city is known for its beautiful canals, many bridges, and floating gondolas. It is the perfect city to simply wander around because you’re met with amazing views at each turn. This makes Venice a great destination for a day trip. If you’re planning to travel around Italy and don’t have much time, Venice is a city you can see in a day. Check out this one day itinerary for a day trip to Venice!

How to Get to Venice

Venice is an easy travel destination with its nearby airport and train station. Venice is a great city for a day trip due to its ease of transportation!

From airport:

If you’re flying into Venice, you want to look for flights to Venice Marco Polo Airport. The airport is about 8.5 miles or 13.7 kilometers from Venice. To get from the Marco Polo airport to Venice, you have three options: public bus, public ferry, or taxi. If you’re traveling alone or with another person, I suggest using the public transport options as it is cheaper than a taxi. 

Bus:

The bus from Marco Polo Airport to Venice’s main bus station (Piazzale Roma) is €8,00 each way or €15,00 for round-trip transport. It is the easiest and cheapest way to get into Venice. The bus stop is right outside the airport, located outside the baggage claim and arrivals area. You can buy tickets at the ticket machines at baggage claim, ticket counters in the arrivals area, or the curbside ticket machines. The bus ride from the airport to the main bus station takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes. From the main bus station, you can easily walk or take a public ferry to Venice’s main attractions. 

Public Ferry:

Although getting from the airport to Venice is cheaper, arriving by public ferry offers a fun way to arrive in the city. Plus, it gives more options on your final drop-off location than the public bus. It is less than a 10-minute walk from the airport to the dock where all boats depart from the airport. 

The public ferry is by far the cheapest of the water transport options from the airport to Venice. You can certainly book a shared shuttle boat in advance or take a water taxi, but it will cost you a lot more if you’re willing to make the splurge. The public ferry is operated by Alilafuna and it takes about 70 minutes to get from the airport to San Marco. The public ferry costs approximately 15 euros and you can book online in advance. 

Taxi:

You can also get a taxi from the airport to Venice. Taxis are the fastest way to get into the city but not by much from the public bus. Taxis usually cost 40 to 50 euros and I would only recommend them if you’re traveling in a group. If you have a group of 4 or more people, you could split the cost so that it is almost the same as the public bus.

Private Boat:

If you want a memorable entrance to Venice, you could also book a private boat! Make your arrival in Venice truly unforgettable with a water taxi transfer to your hotel from the airport. Enjoy a scenic boat ride and get an amazing first look at Venice as you arrive at your hotel in comfort and style. Book here in advance for a trusted private boat service to your hotel.

From the train station:

If you’re taking the train into Venice, look for train tickets to Venezia Santa Lucia. Venezia Santa Lucia is the main train station for Venice and it is very central to Venice attractions. The train station is also just minutes away from Piazzale Roma, the main bus station. Walking from the main train station and the main bus station to the center of Venice is only 20 minutes. 

Train travel within Italy is very easy and cheap and that is my preferred method of getting around Italy. If you’re arriving into Venice from another Italian city, I recommend looking at Trenitalia tickets. Trenitalia is the public train company in Italy, and they have a great app that allows you to buy tickets, check train status, and look for routes. If you’re visiting Italy in general, I highly recommend downloading the Trenitalia app. 

Where to Stay in Venice

As mentioned earlier, Venice is a very walkable city! There’s not a bad area to stay in Venice but it depends on your priorities. If you want to stay closer to the train station, I would look for hotels near Piazzale Roma. If you want to stay closer to the main attractions, I would look for hotels near San Marco. Check out my hotel recommendations below!

Hotel Recommendations in Venice:

• Gritti Palace: This 5-star hotel is located on the Grand Canal and housed in a beautiful 15th-century palace and is a landmark of Venetian architecture. The hotel offers several dining options, including a Michelin-starred and the Gritti Terrace, which offers panoramic views of the city.
• Belmond Hotel Cipriani: This luxury hotel is located on the island of Giudecca, just a short boat ride from St. Mark’s Square. It offers beautiful views of the lagoon and a pool surrounded by lush gardens.
• Ca’Sagredo Hotel: This impressive hotel is located in a beautiful 15th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal. It offers luxurious rooms, a rooftop terrace, and a restaurant with stunning views of the water.
• Hotel Londra Palace: This elegant hotel is located near St. Mark’s Square and offers beautiful views of the lagoon. It has a rooftop terrace and a restaurant serving traditional Venetian cuisine.
• Hotel Santa Chiara: This newly renovated hotel is located near Piazzale Rome and Santa Lucia train station. This is an affordable option that offers updated rooms with free Wi-Fi and breakfast included in the price.
• Hotel Al Codega: This hotel is located in a quiet alley just a few minutes walk from St. Mark’s Square. It offers comfortable rooms with traditional Venetian decor and a breakfast buffet included in the price.
• Hotel Abbazia: This hotel is located near the Santa Lucia train station and the Grand Canal. It offers comfortable and spacious rooms with free Wi-Fi and a buffet breakfast included in the price.
• Hotel Scandinavia: This hotel is located near the Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal. It offers comfortable rooms with free Wi-Fi and a buffet breakfast included in the price.

Venice One Day Trip Itinerary

I’ve been to Venice three times now, and two of my visits have been a day trip to Venice while I stayed for two days on my last visit. When I was studying abroad in Verona, I took day trips to Venice as it was only an hour away and only cost about 8 euros by train. From experience, you can totally see the best of Venice in one day!

The best way to see Venice is by foot – there truly is no better way to explore this city full of narrow streets and beautiful canals. It’s the best way to see all its nooks and crannies. Plus, most of Venice is car-free which makes it convenient to walk around. Note: I added in extra time between the itinerary stops as you’re sure to see sights along the way that you’d want to stop at!

My number one tip for visiting Venice is to wake up early! Seeing the city in the early morning is very different from than peak afternoon. The streets are so quiet and empty, plus you can avoid the massive afternoon crowds! 

Follow along with this one day Venice trip itinerary to see the best of Venice while avoiding most of the other tourists:

Start your day in Venice as early as you can! 

And I mean early…

Morning in Venice

Ideally, try and start your day by 7 AM. I know it is early but trust me, it is so worth waking up early in Venice. Venice is one of the most visited cities in the world so massive crowds as expected – especially if you’re visiting on a weekend or during the high season of June to August. 

7:00 AM Rialto Bridge

Start your day in Venice at the Rialto Bridge. The Rialto Bridge is one of the most iconic sights in Venice and it is a must visit while you’re in Venice. There are hundreds of bridges in Venice, but only four cross the Grand Canal with the Rialto Bridge being one of the four. In the morning, the Rialto Bridge is very peaceful and you’ll see a great view of the Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge. Be sure to spend some time admiring the views from the bridge. If you stay on the bridge for just a little while, you can see the entire city come to life with boats and people scurrying around, trying to get ready for the day. 

8:00 AM St. Mark’s Square

Next, head to St. Mark’s Square. This square is one of the most famous squares in the world! It is surrounded on all four sides by restaurants and shops and the Basilica di San Marco. It is a busy and bustling square and early morning is the least crowded it will get all day. Take some time to stroll around the piazza and snap some photos at this famous square.

9:00 AM St. Mark’s Basilica

While you’re in St. Mark’s Square, visit Basilica di San Marco or St. Mark’s Basilica. It is the most important religious temple in Venice and has been the center of public and religious life in Venice. This basilica is dedicated to and holds the relics of St. Mark, the patron of the city. The basilica opens at 9:30 AM (Monday to Saturday*) and it is free to enter, however long queuing lines are typical. People even tend to start lining up before it opens! 

If you follow along this itinerary, you should get here by 9 AM, and getting in line this early allows you to be one of the first to enter the Basilica that day and avoids the long queue. 

You can also buy skip-the-line tickets for 3 euros in person or online (which they’re not offering currently), but if you’re in line by 9 AM, you shouldn’t have to buy skip-the-line tickets.

NOTE: This is a place of worship so please be dressed modestly (women’s shoulders should be covered and shorts are not appropriate)

*On Sundays, the basilica opens at 2:00 PM so if you’re planning to visit on a Sunday, shift this itinerary stop for further in the day and go ahead and visit Doge’s Palace.

10:30 AM Doge’s Palace

After visiting St. Mark’s Basilica, head next door to Doge’s Palace. Doge’s Palace or Palazzo Ducale is another landmark of Venice and it’s a beautiful palace built in Venetian Gothic style. You can visit the palace and tour its stunning interior! You can buy tickets online here in advance.

12:00 PM Bridge of Sighs

Once you’ve finished touring Doge’s Palace, take a short walk over to the famous Bridge of Sighs. This beautiful arched bridge is named for the sighs of prisoners crossing it from Doge’s Palace to prison. Today, it is a popular sight to see in Venice.

Afternoon

12:30 PM Lunch

I’m sure you’re hungry by now and want lunch, but the good news is that there are several great places to eat in the area!

Depending on what you’re in the mood for, here are some restaurant recommendations:

• Tratoria Al Gazzettino: Great seafood and pasta
• Antico Forno: Delicious pizza
• Dal Moro’s Venice: Quick grab and go pasta

Next, make an even more important stop…gelato! You have to stop at Gelatoteca Suso. This is the best gelato in Venice and if you’re in Italy…you have to get gelato on at least a daily basis.

2:00 PM Gondola or Boat Ride

If this is your first time in Venice, you need to take a boat ride! The most popular way is by going on a gondola ride, however, gondola rides are a bit pricey. The prices are fixed and typically cost 80 to 100 euros for a ride in person. If you have a group of 4 or more people then you can split the cost, but if you’re by yourself then it is quite costly. However, I think it is definitely worth the experience if it won’t put a dent in your budget.

Tip: You can also book a gondola here for $30 to $40 per person and this is a great option if you aren’t traveling in a large party and are willing to share a gondola! It’ll be much harder trying to find random people to split a gondola in Venice.

If you’re not willing to make the splurge, then you can also take a public ferry! Those only cost 7,50 euros a ride and can take you around Venice as well.  There are multiple ferry ports around Venice, and you can use Google Maps to find the closest one from where you’re at.

4:00 PM Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo

After your boat ride, head to Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo for a great view of Venice! It is also famous for its external multi-arch spiral staircase. The palazzo is an architectural wonder and definitely well worth the visit. I highly recommend booking tickets online in advance as it does sell out.

6:00 PM Libreria Acqua Alta

Next, check out one of the coolest bookstores in the world! You definitely want to add this bookstore into your day in Venice trip itinerary. Libreria Acqua Alta is a unique bookstore with lots of vintage books…and cats. It’s a great spot to browse around for books and even take some photos! There are great photo opportunities in this bookstore as there is a parked gondola outside and cool stacks of books in the back.

Evening

7:00 PM Sunset and Drinks

Depending on how much time left you have in Venice, I recommend getting drinks at the Gritti Palace. Gritti Palace is a luxury 5-star hotel in Venice and worth a visit even if you’re not staying here. Drinks are more expensive here but you will get a great view

If you have more time, go watch the sunset from Rialto Bridge. It will be crowded, but the sunset over the Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge is stunning! It will be the perfect way to end a day in Venice. Hope you enjoy your day trip in Venice and let me know in the comments how it goes!

If you have extra time…

If you do have more time than a day in Venice, I highly recommend visiting the islands around Venice, especially Murano and Burano. Both of these islands are great day trips from Venice and are both very unique and special. Murano is known for its glass and you can visit and watch the artisans demonstrating their trade. When you hear Lake Como, what do you think of? Stunning villas, mountain vistas, private boat rides, or perhaps even the planet Naboo if you’re a Star Wars fan. Lake Como had long been on my travel bucket list and I was so glad to have spent my birthday this year in Lake Como. Let me tell you, Lake Como did not disappoint. This lake in northern Italy has long drawn the attention of people from all over the world and is a popular vacation destination…for a good reason. Follow along with this complete guide to Lake Como including a Lake Como Itinerary, travel tips, and other recommendations!

How to Get to Lake Como

As mentioned earlier, Lake Como is an alpine lake in northern Italy. I suggest flying into Milan and then taking the train to get to Lake Como. There are three airports in Milan: Malpensa (MXP), Linate (LIN), and Bergamo (BGY) airports. Malpensa is the largest and busiest airport so you’ll most likely fly into MXP. From MXP, you can take the Malpensa Express train to Milano Centrale, Cadorna, or Milano Porta Garibaldi, which are the main train stations in Milan. The Malpensa airport is 31 miles (50 km) from Milan and the trip takes about an hour. This is the easiest and cheapest way to get to Milan from the airport as the ticket is around 14 euros.

Side note: If you have time to spare, I highly recommend spending time in Milan! It is a beautiful city with stunning architecture and buildings and diverse neighborhoods.

By train

You can take the train from Milan to several towns including the popular towns of Como and Varenna on Lake Como. There are almost 100 trains a day between Milan and Lake Como so it is a frequent and regular route. Trenitalia is Italy’s public train system and all Trenitalia trains to the Lake Como area depart from either the Milano Centrale or the Milano Cadorna stations. I recommend downloading the Trenitalia app to check timetables, book tickets, and find out where your train is!

These are the most popular train stations for train travel to Lake Como:

• Como S. Giovanni (City: Como)
• Como Nord Lago (City: Como)
• Lecco (City: Lecco)
• Varenna-Esino (City: Varenna)

Most of the train stations are located on the eastern side of Lake Como, but if you want to visit towns on the western side you can easily use a combination of train travel and bus and ferry travel.

Train travel is perhaps the cheapest and most convenient option to travel to Lake Como and my preferred method of travel in Italy. However, you could also choose to book a tour, take a bus, or rent a car!

By tour

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of finding your way to Lake Como, you can take a tour from Milan! Day tours to Lake Como from Milan are a very popular option if you only have 1 day to discover Lake Como. The recommended Milan to Lake Como tour below allows you to see the best of Lake Como in one day! It includes transportation to and around the lake (including a cruise on a private boat).

By bus and ferry

You can also take a bus from Milan to Lake Como. Buses leaving Milan for Lake Como leave from Milan’s Centrale bus station and end at Como’s S. Giovanni bus station. From here, you can take a local bus or ferry to get you to other Lake Como towns.

If you’re not in a rush, the ferry is a great option to see Lake Como. It takes just over two hours to cover the scenic water route and it stops 10-16 times along the way (this varies throughout the day). Visit Navigazione Laghi and then click on Lake Como to check departure times and prices for the ferry.

Fares for ferries vary depending on the route but here are the common routes:

• One-way ticket Como-Bellagio: €10.40
• Free-circulation ticket Como-Bellagio (valid 1 day): €23.30
• One-way ticket Bellagio-Varenna: €4.60 (this price applies to all one-way passenger transfers between towns in the central area of the lake)

By car

A road trip from Milan to Lake Como is a scenic drive! Driving allows you a chance to stop at some picturesque areas along the way and gives you the flexibility to drive around the lake without waiting for ferries and trains. However, the route from Milan to Lake Como has several toll roads and driving actually takes longer than the train.

Once you arrive at Lake Como, cars are restricted from driving in many areas of Lake Como unless you’re a local resident. The roads could be congested especially in the summer and parking could be a nightmare. If your hotel offers a place to park, you should be fine – otherwise, you’ll spend quite a bit of time finding parking spots. Also, keep in mind that only some of the ferries connecting the towns around the lake allow cars. In my opinion, this is the least preferable option for getting to and around Lake Como.

How to Get Around Lake Como

The best way to get around Lake Como is by ferry or train!

If you’re visiting towns on the east side of Lake Como, then taking the train from Como to Varenna is cheap and straightforward.

However, ferry travel is better for traveling between lakeside towns. As mentioned earlier, the ferry is a great option to see Lake Como. There are over 16 ferry docks along the lakeside towns of Lake Como with shorter and more frequent routes for the towns in the middle of the lake (Varenna – Bellagio – Menaggio). Find the timetables on Navigazione Laghi and then click on Lake Como to check departure times.

Again, I wouldn’t recommend driving around Lake Como as the roads are narrow and can get congested!

Where to Stay in Lake Como

There are endless options of places to stay on Lake Como from luxury to budget-friendly. I recommend staying in towns such as Varenna, Como, Lecco, and Bellagio which are central to public train and ferry transportation.

Here are some great options based on all kinds of budgets!

Luxury

• Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a 5-star hotel on Bellagio that features multiple gardens, indoor and outdoor pools, and a luxury spa. This impressive hotel features grand staircases, frescoed ceilings, and splendid chandeliers in Murano glass. Perfect for a romantic getaway, this hotel will take your breath away!
• Passalacqua is one of the newest luxury hotels on Lake Como and it does not disappoint! This stunning hotel is located in Moltrasio and is the perfect place to relax. Back in the 18th century, it was created as a place on Lake Como for friends, for love and leisure, for the pleasures of the table, and the Italian art of dolce far niente. Today, it goes back to its roots and promises to curate the same dolce far niente atmosphere.
• Hotel Belvedere is a lakeside paradise dreamt of by a woman in 1880. Since then, five generations of mother and daughter have – with determination and love – perfected, protected, and passed down this dream. Mid Range

• Hilton Lake Como is a polished hotel that is 1 km from both the Como San Giovanni train station and Villa Olmo, an 18th-century manor with lakefront gardens. It is the first Hilton hotel in the Lake Como region and a great option if you’re a Hilton Honors member to earn and/or redeem points! It features a rooftop infinity pool and several restaurants and bars.
• Hotel Griso Collection is a modern hotel 4-star hotel situated between the lake of Como and the mountains near the town of Lecco. It is a 20-minute walk from the Lecco train station and less than a 5-minute drive. Rooms at Hotel Griso have large windows and views of Lake Como and the property features a panoramic lounge bar, a rooftop sun terrace with a hot tub, and free parking.
• Hotel Olivedo is a family-run hotel on the shores of Varenna. Overlooking Lake Como, this hotel is in a 19th-century building that is a 5-minute walk from the Varenna-Esino train station. The 10 casual, warmly decorated rooms offer lake views and a lake-view terrace restaurant serves traditional dishes from the Lombardy region. In summer, breakfast is served on the panoramic terrace.
• Hotel Bellagio is a boutique hotel in the heart of Bellagio that offers comfortable accommodations and boasts lovely views over Lake Como. The hotel is accessed directly from Bellagio’s main square and is within walking distance from the town’s shops, cafés, and restaurants. A continental breakfast is also offered every morning.

Budget Friendly

• Hotel Fioroni is a family-run hotel that is 15 minutes walk away from the Bellagio pier, where ferries leave for other Lake Como towns. Fioroni’s spacious and air-conditioned rooms all come with a mini-bar and a flat-screen TV and most of them feature a balcony or terrace, with views of the lake.
• Ostello Bello Lake Como is a laid-back hostel that is a 3-minute walk from the banks of Lake Como, an 8-minute walk from Como San Giovanni train station, and a 10-minute walk from Como Cathedral. It features basic private rooms, and mixed-gender and female-only dorms. A breakfast buffet, dinner, and tea and coffee are all included, and there’s free food in a communal kitchen. Other amenities consist of a roof terrace and a garden with hammocks.
• Bike & Active Hotel Il Perlo Panorama offers the best view of all of Bellagio! This family-owned hotel offers spacious and clean rooms and an unforgettable view! This hotel is located on the top of the hill facing the lake 1.9 mi from the center of Bellagio. This hotel is a comfortable and quiet place to spend your holiday with a garden, a balcony, and a terrace. Complimentary breakfast is served every morning and free parking is offered.

Note that hotel prices do fluctuate between seasons and peak pricing is from June through August. I suggest visiting outside of peak season for the best prices.

Places to Visit on Lake Como

What most people don’t realize is that Lake Como is a large area! You could spend months exploring the charming towns around Lake Como. If it is your first time visiting Lake Como, I recommend staying for 3 to 5 days and choosing a few towns to visit. Lake Como is one of those places where you want to experience slow travel and just relax. One of the best things about Lake Como is that you can just stroll around, enjoy gelato and delicious Italian food, take a boat ride, and be worry-free.

There isn’t necessarily a lot to do on Lake Como, but there are certainly highlights you should check out:

• I Giardini di Villa Melzi (Bellagio): This picturesque botanical garden on Bellagio offers a lakeside path with statues and stunning mountain and lake views.

• Villa del Balbianello (Lenno): Built in the late 16th century, this magnificent villa is known for its picturesque gardens, which exclusively feature flowers and trees in the colors of the Italian flag! This villa was also featured in Star Wars as the Planet Naboo where Anakin and Padme got married.

• Villa Monastero (Varenna): This impressive villa houses a Botanical Garden that extends for almost 2 kilometers along the lakefront from Varenna to Fiumelatte. The inside of the villa has become a museum with 14 rooms furnished with original objects and furniture.

• Castello di Vezio (Varenna): The Vezio castle sits at the top of the mountain and the vistas are well worth the hike up. The medieval castle dating to Roman times provides scenic views of Lake Como.

• Orrido di Bellano (Bellano): Take a lovely walk into a deep, narrow, 15 million-year-old gorge with a fantastic waterfall at the end.

• Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Como): Possibly one of the most significant Gothic churches in Northern Italy, the Duomo of Como is definitely a remarkable building that is worth a visit!

• Funiculaire Côme-Brunate (Como): Views over Lake Como & surrounding mountains from a funicular railway, with trails at the top

Lake Como Itinerary

As I mentioned earlier, you could spend months exploring the charming towns around Lake Como! I know we all wish that we could spend months in Italy, but chances are that you don’t have an unlimited amount of time in Italy. If you’re visiting Lake Como along with other Italian cities like Venice, Milan, Rome, and Florence, then you might be short on time. Ideally, you should spend at least three days in Lake Como but you can also do a day trip from Milan.

I put together a three-day itinerary below that allows you to see the best of Lake Como. Feel free to adjust it as you need based on where you’re staying on Lake Como and how long you plan to stay!

I stayed in Bellagio during my time in Lake Como so I am starting my itinerary off in Bellagio.

Day 1 – Bellagio and Varenna

Arrive in Bellagio

You’re starting your Lake Como trip in the beautiful town of Bellagio! You can get to Bellagio by taking the train from Milan to Varenna and then taking the ferry to Bellagio. I recommend buying a ferry pass as you’ll be taking the ferry several times during your time in Lake Como.

Explore the streets of Bellagio

The best thing to do in Bellagio is simply wandering around the charming streets. The narrow streets here are full of gems and you can spend hours exploring the heart of Bellagio.

One of the best views and famous Instagram photo spot (pictured above) can be found on the street Salita Serbelloni where Trattoria San Giacomo is located.

Visit Giardini di Villa Melzi

Giardini di Villa Melzi is a stunning lakeside garden with a villa on Bellagio. It is near the ferry dock of Bellagio and offers stunning views of the lake and the mountains. It is very picturesque and well worth a visit.

Depart for Varenna and soak in the views

Take the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna and you’re met with a fantastic view during the ferry ride. When you arrive in Varenna, the ferry dock is only a few minutes walk from the center of Varenna. Walk along the lakeside promenade towards Molo Riva Grande for a scenic view of Varenna.

Enjoy drinks or a meal in Varenna

There are several great restaurants and cafes that offer a great view of Varenna. I recommend stopping for drinks or a meal while you’re in Varenna as the eateries here come with a picturesque view! I ordered drinks at Bar II Molo and they were delicious! Plus the view was unbeatable.

Visit Villa Monastero

Next, keep heading south on the main street in Varenna to reach Villa Monastero. This historical villa was constructed at the end of the 12th century as a convent. Today, it is a museum and known for its beautiful botanical gardens.

Hike Up to Castello di Vezio

You’re going to end day one on Lake Como with a fantastic view of the area! Hike up to the ruins of Castello di Vezio. The hike takes about 30 to 40 minutes from the center of Varenna and the view is fantastic from there!

Day 2 – Menaggio, Tremezzo, and Lenno

Explore Menaggio

Start day two in Lake Como by exploring Menaggio! It is reachable by ferry and Menaggio another great lakeside town to visit. The main square is called Piazza Garibaldi and it is surrounded by restaurants and shops. There is also a beach (Spiaggia Lerai) on Menaggio where you can swim and sunbathe at.

Head towards Tremezzo

From Menaggio, you can take a 10-minute bus ride (the C10 bus) towards Tremezzo. Tremezzo itself isn’t a large town, but there is a gorgeous villa (Villa Carlotta) near the town.

Tour Villa Carlotta

Villa Carlotta is a gorgeous villa on Lake Como and one of the most popular attractions!
Overlooking the shores of Lake Como, the villa was built in the late-seventeenth century by Marquis Giorgio Clerici of Milan. In 1801, Villa Carlotta was sold by Caterina Bigli Clerici, the last descendant of the noble Milanese family, to Giovanni Battista Sommariva.

Over the years, the villa has passed to a number of different esteemed families, and today, it is a museum that is open to the public. The museum is famous for the art collection preserved within. You can tour this stunning villa and its gardens from mid-March onwards.

Tip: Try to book tickets to Villa Carlotta for opening time to experience the least amount of crowd.

Head Towards Lenno

From Villa Carlotta, take the C10 bus towards the town of Lenno. It is a 15-minute bus ride

Explore the stunning Villa Balbianello

Villa Balbianello is perhaps the most famous place in Lake Como.

When you look up Lake Como, most likely a photo of Villa Balbianello will be shown.

This villa is truly magnificent and the gardens are breathtaking.

Villa Balianello has been featured in several films including Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

The whole complex consists of two residential buildings, a church, and a portico (known as Loggia Durini) that can host weddings and events in a truly unique setting..

The villa’s interior, accessible only by guided tour, houses some English and French furnishings which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. It also houses numerous paintings on glass and a rich collection of sculptures and artifacts.

Note: The villa is only open from mid-March to November from 10 AM to 6 PM. It is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays so plan accordingly and rearrange this itinerary if needed.

Day 3 – Como and Sunset Cruise

On your last day, you’re going to visit the town of Como!

Visit Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, also known as Como Cathedral, is the main church in Como. The cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and was built between the 14th and the 18th centuries. This cathedral is recognized as one of the most important religious buildings in northern Italy. Although the Gothic features are predominant, the cathedral also hosts many Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque elements.

Note: Check the hours of visitation online and dress modestly.

Stroll along the romantic Passeggiata Lino Gelpi and see the impressive Villa Olmo

Villa Olmo has it all! On the grounds, you’ll find an Italian-style garden overlooking Lake Como, an English-style back garden for relaxing, and interior rooms full of paintings, statues, and precious stucco decorations.

The best part? Admission to the villa and its gardens is completely free.

Take the Funiculaire Côme-Brunate for fantastic views

For gorgeous views over Lake Como, take this funicular from Como up to the top of a mountain. You’ll get a panoramic view of the lake and there are hiking trails atop! Either buy a return ticket for the funicular back down to Como or take one of the many hiking trails that wind their way down to the lakeshore.

Go on a sunset boat ride on Lake Como

The best way to end a Lake Como holiday is to take a sunset cruise – with prosecco of course!

Sail around Lake Como while taking in the sights one more time before departing this beautiful paradise.
