The most distinguishing characteristic of Riad Les Yeux Bleus is perhaps the remarkable blue wash of its interior. The 12-room riad is located in the heart of the busy Bab Doukkala district, yet you’ll find peace and calm behind their doors.

The restaurant on property serves modern variations of traditional and homemade Moroccan cuisine, with an emphasis on using fresh local produce. Additionally, this riad features a spa and hammam, swimming pool, and jacuzzi!

Check out that beautifully decorated courtyard at Le Riad Yasmine! Le Riad Yasmine is an urban green jungle that juxtaposes the red buildings found around the city.

This private boutique hotel contains only eight uniquely-styled rooms! Be sure to check their website for photos of which room to book. Your stay also includes complimentary breakfast which you can request to have poolside or on the terrace.

La Mamounia is an award-winning, luxurious, 5-star hotel that should be on everyone’s travel bucket list! It is actually one of the most famous places in Marrakesh due to its beautiful architecture and reputation. Though this hotel is not like the traditional riads, I had to mention it as it is often regarded as the best place to stay in Marrakesh.

There are a variety of accommodations to choose from including rooms, suites, signature suites, and even entire riads! You can also find four different restaurants, numerous bars, pools, and a world-class spa on the property. Even if you don’t book a spa treatment, be sure to stop by to admire the beautiful architecture of the spa.

9. Riad Goloboy Marrakesh

I love the distinct blue interior here at Riad Goloboy Marrakesh! Riad Goloboy is part of a complex of two 19th century aristocratic houses lovingly restored by art collector and interior designer Beatrice Faujas. Faujas’s style blends valuable antiques and original works of art with an unexpectedly eclectic contemporary touch.

This is a very beautiful riad with plenty of photo opportunities! The colorful works of art by Henri Matisse and Serge Poliakoff inspired the joyous hues found around the riad. It truly feels like you’re living in a contemporary art museum. Faujas also designed each of the 15 rooms and placed unique decor in each one. It will be difficult to choose your room as some of the rooms here, with their bright colors, resemble sets from a particularly elegant Wes Anderson film, while others have a certain sensitivity to One Thousand and One Nights with sumptuous Moorish details.

Furthermore, the riad features a Majorelle blue courtyard, pool, restaurant, and two magnificent terraces with a jacuzzi that overlooks the Atlas Mountains and the Mamounia Gardens. Riad Goloboy also offers complimentary breakfast which can you can request to have on the terrace, at the pool, in the restaurant, or even in your room.

Set on beautifully landscaped grounds, Royal Mansour Marrakech is a lavish 5-star luxury hotel with each guest staying in their own riad. Yes, instead of staying in a room within a riad…you book an entire riad! This is what sets this hotel apart from the rest of the Marrakesh riads. The hotel calls this unique concept a “medina with the medina”.

There are no suites or rooms at Royal Mansour, but rather riads. There are a total of 53 riads of one to four rooms, all with private courtyards and fountains. Upon arrival, guests are escorted through the gardens to their own private riad. This is the only hotel in the world offering that unique concept!

The Royal Mansour Marrakech covers 5 hectares and has 3 restaurants, 3 bars, a spa, gardens, a pool, and a kids’ club. This offers countless opportunities to explore and relax at the property!

Get lost in the old town of Marrakesh if you truly want to experience Marrakesh. The medina is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marking the site of what once was the political, economic, and cultural center of Morocco.

No visit to Marrakesh is complete without wandering through Jemaa el-Fnaa. Find yourself going down narrow alleys, into dimly lit shops, and through crowded streets. I loved being able to stop navigating and put my phone away to enjoy all that the medina has to offer. There are so many hidden shops and treasures to be discovered.

2. Bargain in the Souks

Wondering through the medina, you are bound to see some goods that catch your eyes whether it be colorfully woven scarves, leather goods, wooden figurines, or intricate lamps. However, don’t purchase any goods before bargaining with the shopkeepers over the price. Bantering with the shopkeepers is part of the fun of shopping in the souks. The goods are priced to be bargained with so you will be able to bring the price down even if just by a little.

Bahia Palace is a grand palace that was built in the 19th century. It is an extravagant work of art and display of Islamic architecture. I visited right before closing time and found the palace to be quiet and non-crowded, but make sure to have plenty of time to explore the grounds.

Jardin Majorelle is a botanical garden created by French artist, Jacques Majorelle. It took over 40 years to create this stunning work of art. It is any photographer’s dream to shoot in such an enchanting space filled with exotic plants and painted in vibrant colors. Don’t miss out on the Berber Museum and the Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) Museum within the garden grounds. This is a popular attraction so I recommend visiting during opening hours to avoid the crowds.

However, a night’s stay here does come with a price tag and you would need to book your stay in advance during peak season. You could still visit this iconic hotel without staying here by booking a spa visit or purchasing a day pass known as a “Season Pass”. The pass includes lunch in the Pavilion Piscine (excluding beverages), a 60-minute spa treatment (either a massage or hammam and scrub), as well as access to the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the jacuzzi, the sauna, and the gym.

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house with an interior courtyard and staying at a riad is a must when visiting Marrakesh – the good news is that are plenty to choose from. There are so many beautiful riads, but here is a sneak-peak of some of my favorites:

Be sure to head to a viewing area plenty of time before the sun sets so you can get a good spot.

Marrakesh is a city that I would visit over and over again! There are so many things to do and it is such a colorful and vibrant city.
If you’re reading this article, chances are that you’re either planning to or interested in visiting Morocco. Here’s a sign – you absolutely need to visit Morocco! I actually lived in Morocco for over two months and fell in love with this beautiful country. Morocco is characterized by ornate Moorish architecture, delicious food, and the kindest people! I’ll always think fondly about my time spent in this beautiful country. I know planning a trip to Morocco could seem daunting, but I want to be of help to you! Since I spent an extended amount of time in Morocco, I got to travel around most of the country. Here are the best places to visit in Morocco based on my personal experience!

Essaouira was my favorite city that I visited in Morocco, and I hadn’t even heard about it before arriving! I had planned out most of the cities I was visiting prior to my trip, but I randomly decided to visit Essaouira. I am so glad I did because this beautiful seaside town is absolutely charming and relaxing. There were significantly fewer tourists here and the shopkeepers were much nicer and friendlier as compared to those of Marrakesh and Fes.

I recommend walking through the medina and going to the citadel and port for some sweeping seaside views. Plus, you can get delicious fresh seafood caught from the sea at the port. Other than shopping and sightseeing, there are plenty of other activities to do as well. During my time there, I went horseback riding on the beach and booked a scrub at a hammam – both of which were very inexpensive. I recommend spending 2 to 3 days here!

Chefchaouen

View from hike to Spanish Mosque

Known as the Blue Pearl of Morocco due to its strikingly blue walls, Chefchaouen is any photographer’s dream. I couldn’t believe it until I saw it for myself but the old town is actually painted blue. No one knows exactly why Chefchaouen was painted blue but one popular theory is that the blue keeps mosquitos away. If you visit Chefchaouen, you have to take a hike up to the Spanish Mosque to see panoramic views of this gem.

I loved wandering around the medina and getting lost amongst the blue. Honestly, part of the reason I loved my time in Morocco so much was that I could aimlessly walk around and randomly find beautiful spots. I was met with a surprise at each corner I turned! The unique blue of the city certainly makes Chefchaouen one of the best places to visit in Morocco.

Sahara Desert

Sunset over the Sahara Desert

If you’re traveling to Morocco, you have to visit the Sahara Desert! I firmly believe that everyone must take a trip to the Sahara Desert at least once in their lives. No piece of writing or photo could ever fully capture or describe the immense scenery that is the Sahara Desert.

There are two main areas of the Sahara that are popular for tourists to visit in Morocco: the Merzouga Desert and the Zagora Desert. Most visitors visit the Sahara through tour companies, but there are so many tours available that it could be overwhelming to decide what the best option is for you. I, myself, did a lot of research and also talked to several others before deciding on the tour to book. Check out my guide on what you need to know before booking a desert tour in Morocco!

Ait Ben Haddou

Ait-Ben-Haddou

If you’re taking a trip to the Sahara, chances are that you’ll stop at Ait-Ben-Haddou, which is a historic fortified village that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is quite a sight to be seen and you can tour this site as well. Iconic films such as Gladiator, the Mummy, and Prince of Persia were all filmed here. Certainly one of the best places to visit in Morocco!

Marrakesh

Sunset View over the Medina

Marrakesh is an incredible city that everyone needs to experience! As soon as you step into the medina, you will be overwhelmed with all your senses; your eyes will be dazzled by the colorful scarves and intricate lamps, you will hear commotion from the shop owners welcoming people into their shops, and you will smell spices floating through the air. Plus, be sure to taste the freshly squeezed orange juice sold all around the medina.

There’s plenty to do in Marrakesh as well! I recommend spending at least 3 to 4 days in this vibrant city. Check out the top things to do in Marrakesh here.

Fes

View of a tannery

Fes is regarded as the cultural center of Morocco and is famous for its tanneries and leather goods. It is also home to the oldest university in the world, however, non-muslims are not allowed to visit.

I recommend exploring the Fes medina, visiting the tanneries to see the leather making process (note: to get a view of the tanneries you need to enter one of the many leather shops surrounding the tannery – if you a local offers to guide you, politely decline as they may request a hefty tip), and seeing the incredible architecture at Al Attarine Madrasa and Bou Inania Madrasa.

However, I would visit Marrakesh over Fes if I had a limited amount of time in Morocco. The goods were less expensive in Marrakesh, and there are certainly more things to do in Marrakesh!

Tangier

View of Tangier

Located in northern Morocco, Tangier is a port town on the Strait of Gibraltar and only a ferry ride away from southern Spain. The whitewashed walls contrasted against the deep blue ocean is a sight to be seen. You could explore and get lost in the medina for hours. Fun fact: Tangier was a filming location for Inception!

You’ll find that the locals speak Spanish here due to its proximity to Spain. Though it is a large city, there were fewer things to do so I recommend spending 1 to 2 days here.

Tip: Many people travel to Chefchaouen from Tangier as that is a common bus route.

Casablanca

Hassan II Mosque

Casablanca is Morocco’s largest and most populous city and an urban center. Although Casablanca was my home for two months, I didn’t spend too much time exploring because it is largely an industrial city.

The highlight of Casablanca is the Hassan II Mosque which is one of the largest mosques in the world. You can pay to enter the mosque as a visitor and the interior is just as beautiful as the exterior. However, I would recommend skipping Casablanca if you don’t have a lot of time in Morocco.

Rabat

View from the Kasbah

Did you know that even though Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city that Rabat is actually the capital?

Rabat is only a little over an hour north of Casablanca and it is worth a visit if you are spending significant time in Morocco. I loved exploring the Kasbah of the Udayas and seeing the seaside views and visiting the Mausoleum of Mohammed V.

In summary, there are so many beautiful places in Morocco that it was so hard for me to pick the best places to visit! Morocco is an amazing country and each of its cities has so much to offer. I hope you enjoy your trip to Morocco! If there are any more questions you have about Morocco travel, feel free to leave a comment or reach out to me directly.

“Is Morocco safe to travel to?” When people find out that I spent two months in Morocco as a female traveler, that is the most common question that I get asked. Yes, I did live in Morocco for two months in the spring of 2018 and got to travel all around Morocco. I was based in Casablanca and taught English at a local cultural center. When I was not teaching, I spent my time traveling around Morocco, trying to see as much of the country as I can. I traveled to popular cities such as Fes, Marrakesh, Tangier, Chefchaouen, and even the Sahara Desert, and I want to share my experience with you. So, you want to know whether solo female travel in Morocco is safe?

Is it safe to travel around Morocco as a female?

Short answer – yes, absolutely! During my two months in Morocco, I never felt unsafe. I believe Morocco is safe for solo female travel. You’ll still want to take the same precautions as with traveling to any destination, but there was never a heightened fear for my safety. There will still be the risk of pickpocketers and scammers, so you will still want to remain vigilant. However, those crimes are common in any popular tourist destination.

I am a firm believer that there is no true “safe” place in the world. Bad things could happen anywhere even in the safety of our own comfort zone. However, it is important for you to do your research before traveling to ANY country. Check for any travel or safety notices from reputable sources such as those from your own government. If you’re US-based, then the State Government is a great site.

Unless there is a travel notice that says “do not travel” for a certain country, then I believe it is safe to do so. Additionally, please use common sense and good judgment and be aware of your surroundings in any places you travel to.

Common Scams in Morocco

During my two months in Morocco, I never felt unsafe or that I was in danger. Tourism is a large part of Morocco’s economy and Moroccans are very hospitable to visitors. However, there are common scams that I do want to point out that I want people to be aware of:

If someone tells you that you cannot go a certain way and attempt to redirect you, do not follow them. Some excuses might be “because of prayer” or “because of religion”, but these are typically lies. You should judge for yourself whether you can go proceed in the direction.

If you need help finding a place whether it be a restaurant or a landmark, think carefully before asking someone for help. Most of the time they will show you or give you directions, but they will want a tip for their help.

If someone offers to show you a “shortcut”, once again do not follow them. More likely than not, they just want you to tip them at the end. This typically happens in the medinas of Fes or Marrakesh as it could be a maze getting from place to place. I always use Google Maps when I navigate and it was very trustworthy. Maps got me to where I needed to go around Morocco – including walking around the medinas.

I did not fall for any of these tricks as I’ve encountered these in other places I’ve visited before, but I would hate for unseasoned travelers to be unaware.

1. Do they speak English in Morocco?

Yes and no – depending on where you go in Morocco. The official languages of Morocco are Arabic and Berber, the language of the Amazigh people who were the original settlers of Morocco. However, French is also widely spoken as Morocco was occupied by the French in the early 1900s.

Today, French is taught universally and serves as Morocco’s primary language in education, government, commerce, culture, and medicine. Spanish is also spoken by many Moroccans who live in northern Morocco around Tangier. To answer the question, English is not a widely spoken language in Morocco and you will be better off trying to speak French. However, there will be English speakers in the tourist business, and you will find English speakers in the more popular tourist destinations such as Marrakesh and Fes. I actually had the most trouble in Casablanca, but that’s because I was living there and I was living my day-to-day life, not sightseeing or being a tourist.

2. Can I visit the mosques?

You can only visit the mosques if you are Muslim. I was told that you are not supposed to enter the mosques if you’re not a practitioner of the Islamic faith so I never tried entering any. However, you can enter the Hasan II Mosque in Casablanca by purchasing tickets and going on a guided tour. I purchased the entrance tickets in person at the mosque and the tours were frequent – every half an hour.

3. Do I need to wear a hijab or headscarf as a woman?

There is no need to cover your head in Morocco at all. Some Muslim countries might demand that women cover themselves, however, Morocco is a very liberal Muslim country and has no such requirement. The Moroccan women choose whether or not they want to wear a hijab. Overall, Morocco is a very tolerant Muslim country.

4. What should I pack for Morocco?

In general, take loose and modest clothing to Morocco. I wore jeans, short sleeve tops, linen pants, maxi dresses, and maxi skirts, and I never felt out of place. In Marrakesh, I even wore a regular dress since it is more touristy and pretty tolerant. Once again, Morocco is a tolerant country, but do dress modestly in order to be respectful to the culture and not attract unwanted attention.

5. When is the best time to go to Morocco?

The best times to go to Morocco would be spring or fall. I spent March and April in Morocco and I thought the weather was great! The temperature was temperate and typically ranged from a low of 50 degrees to 70 degrees. Plus, it was great to visit the Sahara Desert when it is not blazing hot as it is in the summer.

Make sure to pay attention to when Ramadan starts and ends (it changes annually) before you plan your trip as some businesses will be closed in observance of Ramadan. Muslims will fast from sunrise and sundown during Ramadan so many places might not be open.

6. How do I get around Morocco? What is the transportation situation?

To get between cities, you could take buses or even hop on a train. I found buses to be reliable and I used CTM mainly. Morocco also has one of the best train systems in Africa and has routes that connect the major cities. Check out the ONCF website for times and routes. To travel within a city, there are taxis readily available. I found most cities to be walkable since most of the major sites and attractions were around the same area.

7. Are credit cards accepted in Morocco?

Morocco is still a cash-based society so you will need Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) for day-to-day expenses. You will find some restaurants that take credit cards (typically Visa and Mastercard), but it is best to just have dirhams on hand for everyday expenses. I brought US dollars with me to convert into dirhams at the exchange shops and I also withdrew from ATM machines using a fee-waived debit card.

Final Thoughts on Solo Female Travel in Morroco

In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed my two months living in Morocco, and I cannot wait to go back and visit again. I definitely did experience culture shock when I first arrived, but my advice for traveling to any place is to keep an open mind. In these situations, you’re the outsider and you need to learn to appreciate and assimilate to other cultures, not the other way around. I recommend taking the same precautions you would traveling around Morocco as you would with any place and being cautious of your actions and choice of attire, but solo female travel in Morocco is absolutely safe.

If you’re traveling to Morocco, you have to visit the Sahara Desert! I firmly believe that everyone must take a trip to the Sahara Desert at least once in their lives. No piece of writing or photo could ever fully capture or describe the immense scenery that is the Sahara Desert. However, I understand that planning a trip to the Sahara Desert could seem like a daunting task! There are so many tours available that it could be overwhelming to decide what the best option is for you. I, myself, did a lot of research and also talked to several others before deciding on the tour to book. Here’s what you need to know before booking a desert tour in Morocco!

About the Sahara Desert

The Sahara Desert stretches across the African continent and it is the largest hot desert in the world! It nears almost 9,200,000 square kilometers. It extends from the Nile River to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, covering most of Northern Africa. Needless to say, there are countless ways to see this magnificent place with its golden sunrises, towering sand dunes, and lush oases. I want to share how I visited this natural wonder and my experience to help you plan your desert tour in Morocco.

Typical Morocco Sahara Desert Tour Routes

There are so many tours to the desert that deciding can be really hard! I’ve come to learn that most of the tours in Morocco share a very similar itinerary. Most depart from Marrakesh or Fes and take you to the Sahara Desert and then back to Marrakesh/Fes. Your tour to the Sahara comes down to the number of nights and type of tour.

I’m outlining the most common route options below:

Roundtrip Tour from Marrakesh: Depart from and return to Marrakesh

Roundtrip Tour from Fes: Depart from and return to Fes

Depart from Marrakesh and Return to Fes: Depart from Marrakesh and return to Fes

Depart from Fes and Return to Marrakesh: Depart from Fes and return to Marrakesh

There are two main areas of the Sahara that are popular for tourists to visit in Morocco: the Merzouga Desert and the Zagora Desert.

Merzouga Desert

Merzouga, located in southeast Morocco, is the gateway city to the Erg Chebbi desert which is part of the Sahara. Erg Chebbi is known for its towering and scenic sand dunes! It is about 9 hours from Marrakesh and 8 hours from Fes. Merzouga tours are more popular because the sand dunes are taller here and the dunes have that beautiful golden color.

Zagora Desert

Coincidentally, Zagora, located in southern Morocco, is the gateway city to the Erg Chigaga sand dunes. However, these sand dunes are longer to reach from the closest town. Also, the Zagora desert is not the same golden sand dunes you might imagine. The Zagora Desert looks like the surface of the moon which is why it is not as popular as the Merzouga Desert tours. It is about 6 hours from Marrakesh and 10 hours from Fes.

Frequently Asked Questions about a Sahara Desert Tour in Morocco Answered

Sunset over the Sahara Desert

– How many days should I spend on my Sahara Desert Tour?

The number of days you spend on your tour fully depends on how flexible you are. I would say a 3-day tour is the minimum amount of time for the tour as you’ll spend almost an entire day driving there and back whether you visit the Merzouga Desert or the Zagora Desert. That is a lot of time on the road, and it could be rushed by a shorter tour.

A 3-day tour would give you one night in the desert, and the more days you can spend on the tour, the more nights and highlights you’ll be able to cover. But at a minimum, I would say at least 3 nights or it is going to be very rushed.

Spending 2 or 3 nights in the desert would allow you to enjoy the desert and explore at a more relaxed pace than only spending 1 night in the desert.

– What activities can I do in the actual desert?

There is plenty of activities to do while you’re in the actual desert! You can go camel trekking, sandboarding, visiting local tribes, climbing the sand dunes, or relaxing at your campsite. I loved climbing to the tallest sand dune I could find and watching the sunrise and the sunset.

– What should a tour include and how much should a tour be?

So there are a variety of different tours available to the Sahara Desert, and it depends on your budget. You could book a budget tour, mid-range tour, or luxury tour. The tour typically includes transportation, accommodation, camel ride, and meals. However, the type of tour plays a role in the quality of each. As the saying goes…you get what you pay for!

Budget Tours

There are plenty of budget tours to the Sahara Desert – the problem is finding the good ones! You’ll expect to stay in a very basic tent, mediocre meals, no toilets/showers on the campsite, and plenty of other people on tour. You will most likely be on a huge tour bus on the winding roads (if you get car sick easily this might not be the best option for you). If you’re looking for the basic experience and are fine to rough it for a few nights, then this is a great option for you! I had friends who went on a budget tour who paid $50 USD total for 3 nights.

Mid-Range Tours

For your mid-range tours to the Sahara Desert, you’ll most likely get nicer accommodations than a budget tour and it might be a smaller tour group shared with others. Or you could possibly elect to do a or private tour.

Luxury Tours

Needless to say, the luxury tours are…luxurious! You will not be camping, but rather glamping. You’ll expect a private large tent with running water, bathrooms, shower, large comfortable beds, and delicious meals included in your luxury tour! This was actually the option I went with and I completely thought it was worth it. I had a private driver for my friend and I from Marrakesh and it was basically like we had a personal guide – more on my experience in the later section. I paid $300 USD for our all-inclusive tour.

– Should I do a private or group tour?

This question is related to the section above, but a group tour is much cheaper while a private tour is much more comfortable. The schedule and itinerary on a group are much more strict as well, following set timetables, which on a private tour, you could stop somewhere longer if you’ll like.

– What’s the best place to start the tour?

Either Marrakesh or Fes – though Marrakesh is more popular for options! However, you should definitely visit other Moroccan cities as well. Check out the best cities to visit in Morocco.

– When is the best time of the year to visit?

Since you’ll be spending at least one night in the desert, it is important to keep in mind when you’re visiting Morocco. The summer months (June to August) could be unbearingly hot with average temperatures around 102°F while the winter months could be below freezing. The best time to visit the Sahra Desert is mid-March to May and October to November.

Also, keep in mind when Ramadan is as the holy holiday varies year to year, and many businesses are closed during Ramadan. The desert tour companies could be closed when you’re visiting Morocco during this time.

– What should I pack?

This depends on the type of tour and accommodation during the tour. You’ll want to pack everything in a small backpack for the desert stay as you cannot bring a large suitcase on a camel. Also, depending on the weather, if it is warm then definitely wear lighter clothes with layers. However, you’ll definitely want to layer up in the colder months – especially if there is no heat at the desert camp.

I visited at the end of March, and I packed the following items:

Loose linen pants

Button down shirts

Flowy maxi dress

Light jacket

Scarf to protect my face from sun and sand

sunglasses

Socks

Tennis shoes

Sandals

Toileteries (as my desert camp had a bathroom and shower)

– Should I book my Morocco Desert tour ahead of time?

Yes! In my opinion, you should 100% research quality tour companies and book your tour ahead of time. Visiting the Sahara Desert really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you don’t want to have a mediocre experience. I’ve heard people say that if you book in Marrakesh in person, you’ll be able to get a better deal, but I truly believe in this case that you do get what you pay for. You might pay a better price haggling in Marrakesh, but there may be hidden costs that aren’t disclosed such as extra tips, meals not included, souvenir stops, etc. Essentially, you’ll end up paying the same amount in the end.

I think you should book a quality tour company ahead of time so that you know exactly what to expect on your trip! I looked at a lot of different tour companies and reviews and even contacted different tour companies before deciding on the best option for me.

My Own Morocco Sahara Desert Tour Experience

I booked my tour with Explore Sahara Tours and it was an incredible experience! This post is not sponsored in any way but I would highly recommend anyone to book a tour with them. I actually booked the Private 3 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.

The 3-day private tour was 275 euros per person and was all-inclusive (pick up from the hotel and private transport, dinners, and breakfasts, 1 night in the desert, 1 night in a nice hotel, experienced driver/guide, camel ride in the desert, and drop off at the hotel at the end of the tour in Marrakesh).

I actually had friends who went on a group Sahara Desert tour just weeks before I was planning to visit and they said that the group tour took away so much from the experience. They were crammed on a bus driving along narrow and windy roads and the group was large and the camping facilities were not great. The group tours were much cheaper than a private tour, but my friend and I decided to splurge on this once-in-a-lifetime experience…AND we couldn’t be happier about our decision!

Day 1: Marrakesh – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Gorges

View from Ait Ben Haddou

We were promptly picked up in the early morning in Marrakesh for our tour and started our journey! Our driver was super kind and knowledgeable and I loved being able to pick his brain about Morocco and how he sees the world. We crossed the High Atlas mountains and the scenery driving through the mountains was beautiful. At some points, we were in the clouds! I could definitely understand how riding in a large bus would be scary as the roads are very narrow and winding. I get car sick easily so I was very grateful at that moment that we had chosen a private tour. Another bonus to having a private tour is that we could stop at scenic spots and admire the view! Plus, our driver knew the best views of the Atlas mountains.

We made a quick stop for tea in the morning and then we stopped near Ait Ben Haddou for lunch. Then, we visited Ait-Ben-Haddou and had a private guide give us a tour of this iconic kasbah. It was quite a sight to be seen and I recommend everyone to stop here. Next, we drove through Ouarzazate which is Morocco’s mini Hollywood. Hundreds of movies and TV shows were filmed on the sets within the city, and we were given the option to stop for a tour. We then continued our way into the Valley of the Roses to reach Dades Valley. We spent the night in a hotel located in the Dades Gorges and it was a very nice hotel.

Day 2: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga

Todra Gorges

The next morning we woke up bright and early and departed for Todra Gorges which is a narrow gorge with staggering walls in a valley filled with palm trees and Berber villages. We stopped for lunch in Erfoud (a town known for fossil discovery) and then continued on our way to Merzouga where a camel ride awaited us. We rode the camel to reach our camp in the desert where we would camp overnight. The scenery of the desert was incredible and it looked like a sea of sand. The sand dunes of Erg Chebbi were unbelievable.

When we got to our campsite, I was shocked at how nice it was. There were only a handful of large tents so it was very private and the setup and decor were beautiful. I got into my tent and was once again overwhelmed. It had a king-sized bed piled with sheets, blankets, and pillows. Plus, our tent has a very nice shower and toilet with a working drainage system in the tent.

After I got settled in, there were a few activities we could do including sandboarding. I elected not to sandboard, but instead, climb to the tallest sand dune I could see to watch the sunset. Climbing the sand dune was much harder than I thought…and it took me much longer than I expected to. It was actually quite scary looking down from the top as I could see how far I could fall. I plopped myself down into the sand and waited for the sky to turn all sorts of colors. After the sunset, I went back to the campsite and we were ushered into a large tent for dinner. They kept bringing more and more food out and I lost count of how many courses we were served! The food was absolutely delicious and I stuffed myself.

After dinner, we sat around a fire and listened to people play traditional Berber instruments and sing in their native language. I quickly fell asleep after a very exciting day.

Day 3: Merzouga – Marrakesh

Camel ride in the desert

On our last day of the tour, I woke up very early to watch the sunrise over the Sahara Desert. We had a delicious breakfast and then rode the camel back to Merzouga where our driver met us to take us back to Merzouga. The last day was not eventful as it was spent driving from Merzouga to Marrakesh but I still had a great time talking to our driver. The entire tour was organized very well and it was well worth the money in my opinion.

As I said previously, this post is not sponsored but I do highly recommend Explore Sahara Tours – it is a great family-run business and the guides/drivers are professional and knowledgeable and the entire tour ran smoothly. As mentioned earlier, choosing a tour really comes down to the number of nights and type of tour. You have to make the best decision for yourself and your budget!

Final Thoughts

I hope that this article has been helpful in helping you decide on a tour to the Sahara Desert from Morocco and set expectations for your trip. The Sahara Desert tour was the highlight of my time in Morocco, and I think everyone who visits Morocco should also visit the Sahara Desert. The tours are all very similar, however, there are questions you should certainly ask your tour company before booking:

What is included in the quoted price?

What is not included in the quoted price?

If it is not a private tour, how many total people will be on the tour together?

What are the names of the hotels you’ll be stopping at?

What meals are included and what meals are out of pocket?

Do you have to eat at the same restaurant as the entire tour group on a meal stop?

What are the sleeping arrangements at the desert camp?

What is the full schedule with stops and times?

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me!

Almost two years ago, I spent two months living in Casablanca, Morocco as part of a volunteer exchange program. I had predominately traveled to Western countries at that point and I experienced culture shock for the first time on that trip – I don’t mean that in a negative way whatsoever! I am so glad I got to travel to this beautiful country. I got to learn so much about Morocco during my short time there and I loved to pick my newly made friends’ minds about their perspectives on the world. I taught English to young children and teens on the weekdays at a cultural center in Casablanca, and I spent my weekends traveling to different parts of Morocco. I wanted to share with you some of my favorite cities I visited in Morocco:

5. Fes

View of a tannery

Fes is regarded as the cultural center of Morocco and famous for their tanneries and leather goods. It is also home to the oldest university in the world, however non-muslims are not allowed to visit. However, I would visit Marrakesh over Fes if I had a limited amount of time as the goods were cheaper in Marrakesh and there are more things to do in Marrakesh.

4. Marrakesh

Sunset View over the Medina

Marrakesh is an incredible city that everyone should visit at least one in their life. As soon as you step into the medina, you will be overwhelmed with all your senses; your eyes will be dazzled by the colorful scarves and intricate lamps, you will hear shouting from the store owners welcoming people into their shops, and you will smell spices floating through the air. Plus, be sure to taste the freshly squeezed orange juice sold all around the medina. There’s also plenty to do in Marrakesh other than the medina. Click here to check out the top things to do in Marrakesh.

3. Chefchaouen

View from hike to Spanish Mosque

Known as the Blue Pearl of Morocco due to its strikingly blue walls, Chefchaouen is any photographer’s dream. I couldn’t believe it until I saw for myself but the old town is actually painted blue. No one knows exactly why Chefchaouen was painted blue but one popular theory is that the blue keeps mosquitos away. If you visit Chefchaouen, you have to make a hike up to the Spanish Mosque to see panoramic views of this gem.

2. Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and Merzouga

Ait-Ben-Haddou

A trip to Morocco is not complete without a trip to the Sahara Desert. I highly recommend booking a private tour to fully enjoy this experience as I’ve heard some negative feedback about the large group tours. Typical tours to the Sahara Desert start from Marrakesh and stops at Ait-Ben-Haddou (a UNESCO World Heritage site and iconic filming location for movies such as Gladiator, The Mummy, and Prince of Persia), Ouarzazate (Morocco’s little Hollywood where you can visit sets for over 200 films, including Game of Thrones), and Merzouga (where you will take a camel ride and spend a night in the Sahara Desert). Some tours will take you back to Marrakesh and some will take you to Fes – depends on the tour you book.

Essaouira was my favorite city that I visited in Morocco, and I hadn’t even heard about it before arriving. I had done my research and planned out each weekend I had in Morocco but I had one free one left and randomly decided to visit Essaouira. I am so glad I did because this beautiful seaside town is absolutely charming and relaxing. There were significantly less tourists here and the shopkeepers were much nicer and friendlier as compared to those of Marrakesh and Fes. I recommend walking through the medina and going to the citadel and port for some sweeping seaside views. During my time there I also did horseback riding on the beach and booked a scrub at a hammam – both which were very inexpensive.
